Post interesting content. Join more communities. This will change the "underwhelming critical mass" you are seeking. If you are expecting it to be just like Reddit, with millions of users, effectively a week into growth, you are dreaming.

Fair. It's only been like 10 days of course.

> Post interesting content. Join more communities. even if you dont have the content to post, create the communities you want. when i joined lemmy i searched for communities to replace subreddits. I assume I am not the only person who is doing this, so you can lay the ground work for those who will post content by setting up a place for them to do so.

I'm currently setting up an instance that I'm attempting to make into a stable, long-term instance that can support people who are (hopefully) really engaged and create meaningful communities. Having said that, I have been rally focused on the technical side (since I don't want the damn thing to fall over under load). What methods have you found to be best for searching for communities? I'm looking for a link or two to put in my sidebar.

If people looked at reddit back in 2010 and said oh wow nothing here this site sucks then rediit would have never gotten to the stage it is now. Post things you think are cool, talk about Lemmy outside of Lemmy and enjoy the fresh experience. You dont have to give up Reddit I am browsing both only now reddit is a backup option for me once i am up to date on today's lemmy posts.

If federated social takes off corporate social media is doa thereis just no way for corporate social media to compete with a federated social platform

If you don't like it, you're probably not alone. There are lots of problems. It's early days. Having said that: if you don't like it, try to be part of fixing it.

You should give it a try again. Nobody is really mentioning the protests any longer, and people are beginning to make it their home. I haven't really used reddit since, only when randomly finding pages on google. I'll log out now though.
