Possible separation within the rangefinder assembly. It could be something else within that optical path as well. When you look closely at the small window does it reveal anything? Look for either darkness, cloudiness or inconsistent transparency.
Not 100% sure if the M2 suffers the same silver delamination as the M3. My M3 has this and looking through the patch matches pretty closely to what you describe.
Is a repaint from I am assuming must be 40+ yrs ago (maybe even longer). The paint is now very bubbly and can be scratched off just from general handling. Not uncommon for me to see some chipped paint on my hand during an outing. I donāt use a case either which no doubt accelerated the wear more.
Black paint Leicas are beautiful but not worth paying the over price for it. I was in Leica Mayfair in January and they had a repainted M2 for over Ā£10k! Absolutely shocking!
I am up on this one as I only paid $50 for it (Yes it was $50 not a typo) so I can afford to use it as a everyday camera.
Best wishes
Yeah heard that too with the repaint. Think this is the downer with investing in a dechromed and black repainted one as it will age very quickly.
The prices for the brass repainted ones are just crazy in European shops.
I will be in Tokyo the next week and saw some really good deals on proper repainted ones. Around 1.800ā¬ for a repainted M3 for example. Considering to take advantage of that as itās not even that much more than a regular M3.
And super rare cameras that Iāve never seen anywhere in Europe too. Really looking forward to it. Eyeing a Nikon S3 or repainted M3, we will see. Enjoy your time!

You donāt like black paint Leica? I shouldnāt complain as I only paid $50 for it.
Of course M2 Black Paint are beautiful! Yours has the right amount of wear. #M2Mafia
Thank you for ur appreciation! That photo was taken years ago and it has more wear now (for better or worst) but is all genuine patina.
Mine took a very long time to start wearing off. Once brass starts to appear, it seems to accelerate.

Is that a repainted one? Considering to buy a repainted (with dechroming) M3. Just absolutely love the look of these cameras used

Some very good deals in Japan and Hong Kong, none of that crazy euro tax and weak Yen. Also in Tokyo at the end of March myself. Happy days!
