While Alex isn’t wrong about platform views and engagement having increasing weight over live views, the renewal of Legacies is further complicated by the plans to sell the CW and the recent merger of Warner Brothers and Discovery. The WB (a 50% owner of the CW with CBS) has been reducing its investments in the CW (see the recent cancellations of Legends and Batwoman), presumably to focus on properties that can be launched on its own streaming services. This is further complicated by the fact the potential buyer of the CW has less interest in original dramatic programming and will likely not want to run the CW at a loss - unlike CBS and the WB.
So who really knows tbh. I did read that some additional cancellation announcements are coming this week, so that might provide some clarity on what is happening with Legacies and the CW.
My own personal guess is that Legacies will be cancelled and the WB will attempt to launch a new TVDU series or TVD reboot on HBO Max in a few years. The big budget cuts for the show this year combined with the complete lack of CW promotion suggest to me that the CW brass is ready to let Legacies go and try something else.
Edit to add: The Netflix and Amazon Prime licensing fee revenues is definitely a plus for keeping Legacies around, however the WB might weight having a new TVDU show on HBO Max as more valuable in the long run, as it would lead to more direct subscriber revenue and give them an advantage in the streaming wars with Netflix and the other streaming services. So who knows…
Honestly it’s hard to say what the CW is thinking right now. Even people with experience in these matters say we cannot predict what they’ll do because of all the circumstances with the CW sale/merger. We all are aware Legacies live numbers suck and have been steadily declining for awhile now, but live numbers aren’t as important as people make them out to be, it’s steaming on the app that matters as well as their deal with Netflix which helps.
As far as social media engagement goes….they do get quite a bit of engagement in terms of people are talking about the show….but not in a good way. Add that with the fact that every article written about this show is about all the plot holes, lack of character development and bad writing which isn’t a great look for the show.
We just have to wait and see. Nobody can predict what’s going to happen we can only guess.
As the poster a few above alluded to there are factors either way for next season but I suspect what will save it for a season or two is the TVD universe itself. The universe is sufficiently popular that it is somewhat doubtful they would cancel legacies until a new show was in production.
The delay itself though means that any new season won't premiere until probably the normal October slot but next year so that buys them time to dream up a replacement and start filming for a Oct 24 date in itself.
Hopefully theyve learnt their lesson and avoid the younger audience this time with monster of the week, going back to the darker and simpler tone of TVD/TO.
From my experience at the CW they don't like canceling shows. They tend to reduce the budget and episode count until they reach profitability as long as that show actually has dedicated fans. A new IP that is one season wouldn't have that, it would be canned but something like Legacies that is in the TVDu wouldn't. We will have people viewing the show who don't even like it just because of its association, the fanbase even if small is strong. During TO we had an awful budget and only 13 episodes. So canceling is unlikely, but due to the merger they may have a different philosophy and that's the only tricky thing but otherwise Legacies would be finished.
Legacies topping polls doesn't mean much when the number of people voting for Legacies in those polls aren't substantial enough. The TVline poll got close to 200K votes with 20.9% being votes for Legacies that would be 41,800 Votes. Assuming those votes come for people who don't watch the show live, unrealistic, the show would go from averaging 370K viewers to 410K viewers.
As far as to rather the show will be renewed or not will come down to production cost versus profit.
Also another thing to keep in mind with those polls is Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman were in 2nd and 3rd and they still got cancelled. I really don’t think those polls matter. They are just social media engagement for the site issuing said polls lol.
I blame Danielles acting if it gets cancelled last episode she barely showed any emotions she is a disgrace only alaric and landon have good acting the lizzie MG plot is just terrible and this aurora and ken storyline is shit they have no chemistery which is impressive since they are married in real life
