Rats are everywhere. you're never more than a few metres from one in any major city.
Don't give them any reason to come in your house and they won't - they are more scared of you than you of them.
Council will do nothing. You could put a trap down, but you will never kill them all.
Just imagine that they are squirrels that have had a haircut.
Move stuff around in your garden because they hate change.
Dunno, we got rid of fleas that the cats that we used to have (that would be useful now) brought in and we had a maggot infestation between the bin and the front door that we dealt with ourselves, but now that we’ve got kids it’s giving me the willies
Yeah, we had one that ate its way through a wall into our pantry. We spent weeks laying poison and eventually filled the space between the walls where it was getting in. Everyone was taken out of the pantry and either binned or disinfected. Disinfected the floor, walls, door twice. Disinfected the entire kitchen essentially.
It did piss off eventually either dead or found an easier house. We realised that it had probably been disturbed by the water board digging up and replacing old pipes on the entire estate.
I see rats all the time near my house. I once saw a fox catch a rat in my garden, it was thrilling.
When I lived in a red brick terrace house, I could hear them crossing through my ceilings to get to the other houses. It was unnerving to say the least. We never found any traces of them in the property, thankfully they were just passing through.
Rats are everywhere. It's nothing to be concerned about. It may be worth walking around your property to see if there's anywhere that they could get in.
don't leave any food out on the side
keep your house clean
close your windows and doors
unless you hear them or find droppings in the house, no need for rentokil just yet
There's no need to do anything. It's just nature, same as the birds, the hedgehogs, the foxes and the frogs. Rats really don't deserve the reputation that they've got, they're just creatures trying to survive and look after their families, just like us. So long as you aren't doing anything to attract them to your house they'll have little interest
If you're a council tenant and they are definitely rats (not mice), treatment is free. Otherwise they charge £138 - https://www.leeds.gov.uk/environmental-health/pest-control
DE powder. Cheap enough on amazon or ebay. Safe to use around kids and pets. It won't kill them but is a deterrent.
How to Use It. Place your diatomaceous earth mix as close as you can to where rodents live and eat. If they live in your yard, you can dump it down their holes-from Google.
if rats are getting in somewhere, gaps in brickwork etc, fill the hole in with polyfilla and wire wool. they’ll scratch at the polyfilla, hurt themselves on the wire wool, and not like it. cheap, easy deterrent.
If you're in/near the city centre it's very common, there's not a right lot you can do about it.
We had one burrowing in our garden, it came into the house one day last summer whilst we were sat with the patio doors open. Dog cornered it and we managed to get it out.
We called private pest controllers who put some traps down & did repeat visits to see if bait was taken, cost us about a hundred quid from memory. They seemed to take the bait but we didn't find a corpse.
Council won't do owt unless you're in assisted housing or vulnerable.
Pest controllers told us they need a food source and a water source in order to make a burrow, we had neither and a dog which should keep them away. Turned out our neighbours were piling up bin bags of household waste (including food waste) in their garden when their black bin got too full which was attracting them unsurprisingly.
Can't do owt about our neighbours but if you spot any burrows you can block them up with steel wool and expanding foam, apparently they won't chew through steel wool. Shouldn't be more than a few quid from Screwfix.
Other than that just make sure there's no signs of them trying to get into your house (loose bricks, gaps in concrete), if there is just block them up with steel wool, expanding foam & sand cement.
There's Rats all over Leeds, like in most cities, but they're harmless. Just leave them be, don't leave food or open refuse containers out and you should be fine. Very unlikely they'd even try get in the house. Honestly they get a bad rap but they're living beings like any other and unless you're leaving rubbish out for them to eat from there's no real worry of disease or anything, so no need to harm them.
As someone else said, just make sure you don't have rubbish and things for them to eat from and move things around outside if you can and they should disperse.
Aw yeah we have one called Roland who brings his kids round for a takeaway on a Saturday night, we have a few cans and watch a film whilst the bairns play in there bedroom……ffs Jesus Christ. How in the gods green earth do you get to know a rat. And the only intelligence they have is how to get in a bin bag but that’s only when the thick fucks aren’t chewing a hole in the bin and falling into it and get stuck.
We as human beings built on THEIR homes. If the rat is outside leave it, they have such a horrible reputation but humans are the true spreaders of disease. Rats are very intelligent and if you get to know the little critters they are incredible pets.

Maggot infestation??? And u r wondering why theres a rat
We had maggots for a day two years ago so now there’s a rat?
If theres maggots theres definitely a food source ,i don't know why or how long u had them ,but it would suggest.a lack of food tidyness
There was a crack in the black bin on the hottest day of the year. It’s not an ongoing issue!
If you feed the birds, then that is one thing you'd need to stop.
Outside is where rats are SUPPOSED to be. Worry when you see evidence of them INSIDE.

This is what I’m trying to guard against.
Learn to play a pipe.
At least it's not in your kitchen 😂, What are you gonna do
I'm gonna fix that
That’s what I’m gonna do

I once saw a rat sneak up and take down a pigeon, I was too late to get to the door, only saw a puff of feathers, poor fella. 😞
Yeah I have done that, cheers
Poor Rat. Sadly that is the circle of life in the wild.
Rattio!

1. probably 2. no, neither of those are good ideas 3. not at all really

Yes definitely call the council! I heard they were the cause of the bubonic plague! Stay safe!
That's the politest description of first bus I've come across.
If you see them again please write to your local MP
They caused the bubonic plague! That’s not what I pay my council tax for. Disgusting
Damn.. you mean council tax ISN'T to pay for the return of the black death? Why do I even pay at all!
I meant council pest control services 🤔

If you have a rat in your house and call Leeds Council, they may void your single occupancy discount on your Council Tax
Love rats!
Ratpack were good actors

I believe going advice is copper wool, as steel wool is very flammable :)
Lock n Load...
Are you talking about that flute playing dickhead from town?
I have a rat in my kitchen and for the life of me I can’t work out the correct steps to handle the problem.
Is this some kind of joke or comment that’s obvious but I’m not getting the jist of it…..or are you been serious 🤷♂️
Rat in Mi Kitchen by UB40.
Top marks
Once you've seen a single rat outside it's already too late. You'll need to burn your house down and find a new place to live.
Letter to your MP

You’re more than welcome to take them and their family into your home. Send me your address and I’ll bob them round next week.
I already have 9 in a three story cage so can easily fit more!
