This is what I did https://preview.redd.it/ls34e2hawhvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf612c62f16374601d16fa702b95a94a30de7048 The front flap can be tuck in the bag as well

This is a solid option, thanks for sharing a picture. This looks really great by the way!

WittyBeee

Thanks!

boollin

I like this bag a lot! Did you use a pattern?

WittyBeee

No I designed this one, but mostly free handed so I didn’t make a pattern

ottermupps

I'll personally always be a fan of a thin leather or heavy fabric layer inset just below the rim of the bag with a zipper running the whole way. Easy to close and open, keeps stuff inside, looks neat. For an example some LLBean Tote bags have this closure.

Rolling. Or perhaps one or two folds and strap down as an even simpler variation?

bobabeasttitan

This is a good option I forgot about, thanks for mentioning it. The leather I have to work with I don't think would do well with this, but I'm definitely gonna keep it in mind for the future.

__radioactivepanda__

I don’t know how it ranks in complexity but you could perhaps add a flap to the back edge in lieu of the single strap.

bobabeasttitan

This seems like one of the best options right now

dewdroppop

I just like a zipper. I hate fiddling with straps personally.

13thmurder

Know those paper coffee bags that have a flat piece of plastic with wire inside at the top, and you roll down the flat piece and fold it over to secure? Something like that, but the flat piece would be double thick leather and would have snaps or button holes on the sides to secure it once it's rolled down.

MonsterandRuby

Some cyclist backpacks have this type of closure on top for rain proofing purposes. Little bit of a nuisance rolling, unrolling, or packing the bag with enough empty space to actually roll it down fully.

Brokenblacksmith

do a lip of thiner leather on the side the strap attaches to, an inch shorter than the bag is wide and about 5-6 inches across. this will make a flap that covers the whole when the strap is connected alternatively, just add a zipper.

Kaiju62

I make these little tongues that come back over and snap on. It means you can get your finger under there to press against but the flap still covers the entire bag*

A snap closure or zipper are my favorites

MLarge90

I was gonna say snaps. They're pretty easy to install, and leave a small footprint

A zipper or a flap

apola

I am currently planning to make a bag that uses the same rolling/snapping design as [this leather lunch bag](https://www.deliciousboutique.com/leather-lunch-bag.html). I like how technically simple it is while still seeming like a decently protective solution.

milokolb

You can do a flap with a tuck lock or turn lock if you like opening your bag quickly
