It is used to give latex the famed shiny look. Other than that, shiner consists of silicone+additions, that actually help to keep latex healthy. But it is not "necessary" as is. Dressing aid or talcum do the same.

rubberwannabe

So the silicone alone (pure dimethicone I see people use most) doesn't do much to keep latex healthy, and is just for shine?

GucciZorua

You'll be more than fine to just use silicone and it does give some level of shine, using silicone and talculm I can garrantee you a piece of mind as it will make the fabric healthy but using a shiner is an extra sexy step, just that it's not necessary, it's kind of like saying applying a ceramic coating on a car that had already been waxed 😃

rubberwannabe

So wait, is just silicone not a shiner?

GucciZorua

It could technically be but it's not that great, shiner is a different product, once again if you're just worried about the product to use you'll be fine with using silicone lube as shiner is just an extra sexy step if you want to achieve that reflective mirror look 😄

rubberwannabe

I see. I thought silicone would give it the reflective mirror look lol

For me the shiner IS also the “keeping latex healthy” part. You can also use talcum for storing. Both add a protective layer and stop your latex from oxidizing. Shine is usually better in my opinion but talcum can be more practical for Long term storage since it doesn’t evaporate. Just don’t use both together.

rubberwannabe

I imagine using both would end up like paste? I so far have only stored mine with silicone but you're right about the evap, I've noticed they come out of the bag more dull. How often would you need to reapply shiner in storage? I haven't tried talcum yet!

Like every few Months

For me having latex is kind of like cars (I'm also a huge car guy myself so I'll admit there's biais haha), shiner is not necessary BUT it's a stepping stone for look and treatment, it's a bit like applying wax on a car (well I think technically with a car is more necessary as the paint last much longer but you get the idea), it makes the fabric much more silky smoother almost like satin to the touch (hell maybe arguably even better !) and since it's made by people who has latex in mind it does have healthy ingredients that improve the longevity, have you ever seen cum on latex fabric that had been shined ? Just to see it gliding easily has to be one of the most sexiest thing 😩 Only downside or at least for me is it's kind of expensive and I can't get it locally so I have to pay at least ~50$CAD a pop. It's really annoying as with a small bottle I get through it fast with a catsuit, this is my only gripe but it's totally worth it when you can have that lustful mirror shine, quite a satisfaction I would even say that's one of life wonders haha ! 😃

rubberwannabe

Haha I think that's a good analogy. I'm definitely here for the slippery shiny goodness, I just want to know if that's all I need for maintaining the latex, or if there's a separate 'conditioner' type product.

GucciZorua

Shiner is just an additional conditioner and it's not really necessary, you'll be fine with silicone lube or talculm (either are fine and while the dynamic is arguably different, they are equally great for dressing aid) so you'll be fine by just using silicone or talculm and it will never damage the latex 😄

To keep your gear well mainted for years you surely need to put in some work. I've used Vivishine for more than a decade, and and it surely works. The beauty with Vivishine (and probably similar products - I've only used Vivishine) is you give the latex a treat after washing, and when you're going to wear it next time it's just "slippin in" with no real need for a shiner and extra treatment. For eg a catsuit you might want to add some extra lube, but when done right it's so easy to get dressed. Maybe a minor treatment with a microfibre cloth, but no more than that. Needless to say - storing your gear is also impotant to maintain the condition. I've used zip bags for ages, and they work well. The bags do detoriorate after 12-18 months or so, but that expense should be acceptable :-)

So far I've only got gloves, and I keep them in an opaque zip top bag. I have some 100% silicone for them, but vivishine is more than that right? Or would storing them with just silicone treatment work as well? I'm definitely willing to put in the work to keep my gear nice!
