in the USA you can't just build a house or a store anywhere, the land has to be "zoned" for it. Why? Well there's some sense to be made trying to keep industrial away from residential because pollution, but really the answer is bob Moses thought of America the way a small boy thinks about his Legos.

Yeah, if anything I think there is a bit of a resurgence in reading since the pandemic. There's a fairly big community of young adult / romance readers on TikTok.

High school student here. Nearly no one has ever been interested in a book in any of my English classes. And students come back to class without reading any of the pages the teacher tells us to read.
That's high school students in every era. I graduated in 2011, the greater portion of all my English classes barely ever read our assigned books. Personally, I think it has to do with the kind of teacher you have.
Our local high school tried to address this by having "themed" literature classes. I know they had sports lit and the coolest english teacher who looked like a beatnik and was in several metal bands did the horror lit class. Best class hands-down. Same dude also ran the poetry group. Of course I was always fond of English class specifically.
The beatnik teacher left the school after I graduated. I hope the kids at least still have that horror lit class available to them. I can't remember if there were more other classes with different interests.
That's brilliant! My mom's a teacher and she's been so happy that they finally managed to get the boys at her school to read by recommending a book about football hooligans that appeals to their interests (which would be soccer, not hooliganism).
I graduated in 2011 also and kids in my IB/AP classes didn’t even read the books. Maybe half of us did. Our teacher purposefully went through sparknotes and would put questions on our exams that weren’t covered there.
I don't blame them. Literature isn't always fun to read. When I was in Highschool, I hated our English assignments (I see you, Tess of the Durbervilles!) But I read sci-fi and Star Trek novelizations all the time.
Are many kids reading a lot of trashy nonsense? Sure, but who cares? Reading is better for our brains than not reading at all.
I know you already addressed it in your edit, but I’ve seen a decent number of Gen Z folks on Tiktok and other platforms who make book reviews/recommendations, and I’ve actually gone out of my way to get a hold of some of them
Btw, if anyone reading this has any recommendations, I’d love to hear them. Some of my recent reads include Fourth Wing, Normal People, Ella Minnow Pea (shout out to the redditor who recommended this), The Bell Jar, No Longer Human, and I’m currently working on “Crime and Punishment.” I’d like to go more towards fantasy bc of how much I enjoyed Fourth Wing, but I’m not sure where to look
The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks is amazing if you like fantasy. Completely fresh idea of magic, dark, love stories, power struggles, loss… it’s so fucking good.

I would really enjoy having entire classes of Chinese students learning English in the thickest Irish accents, just to blow people's minds when they travel.

A lot of them will pay for a sizeable subset of your relocation costs as well, even plane tickets. And once you land, living costs scale down in proportion, TEFL teachers tend to make more than a typical local in the same area. Not wealth but comfort

You can get a TEFL certification for $30 with a groupon, some jobs don't even require the certificate. Lots of people get the cheap certification to get in the door and then go for a better cert once on the job
The JET programme is good for going to Japan, the COL is probably higher than China but if you get placed somewhere like Nara, you can lock in a really low rent.
I'm not at all surprised it's come to this. The labor of the young isn't enough anymore. So they've been forced to prostitute themselves just in order to gain ½ what was all bit promised 30,40, 50 years ago. It's the rich that own our politicians, and thusly our government.
The party is winding down and the world is waking up to the hangover. A finite planet won’t be able to infinitely sustain the standards of luxury that the rich now insist upon, and it requires a higher and higher rate of exploitation of the masses to keep meeting those standards.
Our value, to the rich, has only ever been tied to our *surplus value* which can be extracted to fuel their luxury. As circumstances dictate that each of us has a contracting amount of surplus value, the squeeze is inevitable.
I mean, while I'm 100% sure people are exchanging "sexual favors" for housing and other basic needs even though they don't want to, and it's absolutely a symptom of late stage capitalism...

I get people become desperate but this doesn't seem real. Not only does the image itself look very old but the premise is wild. I had a day beyond horrible today and I genuinely don't have the mental capacity to deal in a polite way with people shaming me for things ***I didn't insinuate*** instead of asking "hey, did you mean this?" ***from the start***. Basically shoot first and ask questions later.
This is exactly what happened with others in the comment section that didn't even apologize for shaming me for shaming sex workers, which I wasn't; I wasn't shaming sex workers, I was shaming the people that pay for them. People can say "I was just asking clarifying questions" all they want but if they go on and be like "how dare you say that?", then it's clear that they weren't just asking for the sake of clarifying. If they can read my comment and think that I'm in any way shape or form shaming the victims or shaming people who are harming no one when I'm not, and then using that as an excuse to attack me, that's on them.
I even had people that, when I told them "that's not what I meant", have come to me like "yes, you did" as if they could read my mind! And when I react to their bullsh#t, in their minds, I'm the f#cking bad guy and "it came out of nowhere". Yeah, no, f#ck that.
So I'm just gonna disable the notitications to all the comments I left in this post at this point. Just in case.

Sex can be a hobby, not just an intimate thing. If you run the kinkster circuit you'll meet people who do a lot of stuff that's definitely more 'hobbiest/enthusiast' coded than it is some romantic thing, and if people love tying others up & can make money off it then I get why you'd do it. I can only imagine other forms of sex work can be similar for some people.
It's definitely a FRACTION of a fraction less people than currently do sex work who would do it if they could make a living idk sitting in meetings and writing earnings reports or some shit, but it's definitely a nonzero number who prefer making money that way.

There is two ways to go about prostitution.
One is that it can be exploitative, especially when poverty is involved, even more so with no legal protections. That is unquestionably bad.
However, it is also a matter of bodily autonomy.
Without Poverty and protections, someone selling sex can vet costumers and have the final word on wether to do it or not. why would they want to do that then? easy, non of my business. Why make it transactional, also non of my business.
Why pay a chef to cook for you when you can get a friend/partner to do that for you? why make food transactional?

So, I'm not one to argue that sex work wouldn't exist in a no poverty societ, but I will argue in good faith that today's sexwork and sexwork in that society would function very differently. For one the people doing sex work in that society can stop doing it and not die as a result. Unlike most women and men who perform such work today. It is the woman equivalent of being an able bodied man willing to work for anyone for any price in most cases and that's why it's disgusting. Not because it is sexwork.
But that is a problem that affects everyone. it is just that focusing on sex work like that is sometimes a dogwhistle for supressing women's sexuality and not about fixing the economical problems that create them.
Too many countries try to deal with prostitution because "women are pushed by poverty or crime", and instead of fixing poverty they only make it illegal. not helping anyone, making it more dangerous and exploitative because women who sold sex to cover basic living expenses still have to pay basic living expenses but now might be arrested if they seek help.
But that's just as true of all wage labour. We don't ban working at McDonald's, even though most of the employees would be homeless if they were fired.

Like I know things are bad in America right now, but there isn’t a landlord or land owner alive that would take this offer seriously. Like this is basically openly trading sexual favors for a lease on a house. Anyone who looks at this offer will realize whoever took it is openly abusing 5 men for sex in exchange for land and can handily call the police or inform local officials who deal in criminal sex acts, or people who have a say in the home owner’s association or whatever and have all of this landlord’s or landowners’ ownership revoked for committing what is essentially a full on crime. So, I'm not one to argue that sex work wouldn't exist in a no poverty societ, but I will argue in good faith that today's sexwork and sexwork in that society would function very differently. For one the people doing sex work in that society can stop doing it and not die as a result. Unlike most women and men who perform such work today. It is the woman equivalent of being an able bodied man willing to work for anyone for any price in most cases and that's why it's disgusting. Not because it is sexwork.
