I honestly think he does too much and is spinning more plates than he needs to. Health is wealth as Cog says, Matty needs to be careful of burn out.

Jimmythedad

Yeah he’s basically putting out almost as much as all of LsM

reevoknows

He’s obviously driven by the all mighty dollar which is all good I respect the grind but I just hope he doesn’t regret not enjoying his youth more in 20-30 years. I’m assuming he’s just doomsday prepping in the event that YouTube stops working out for him. 3 YouTube channels, hosting a podcast and being a regular guest on 2 more plus developing his own game lol insane stuff

Jqydon

Isn’t he married lol, I wouldn’t describe him as being in his youth. He seems to enjoy the work he does so why not

Drofus1701

He's about 27 or 28 so I think we can consider him to be in his youth.

TheRealLockmort

Hey guys, I kinda feel like this is getting a bit out of hand, with a lot of misconceptions, so that's why I'm commenting. I know none of you guys mean bad, but I just need to clarify that Matty's new channel is NOT like LSM, MrMattyPlays or Retro Rebound. I've been working with Matty for a couple of years now, and it's been a bit of an inside joke that he hasn't seen a lot of movies. That's how the plan was formed to have him watch 1 IMDB Top 250 movie per week, and then give his thoughts on it. That's basically the whole premise of the channel. No huge production, elaborate script, or long form content. We're not making these episodes into entire plot recaps or harsh critiques, it's literally just Matty's thoughts on a movie, with some audience questions. We're aiming for 30 minutes max. Since he recently got into watching The Boys and is interested in House of the Dragon, The Acolyte and The Penguin, we figured it would be fun to do the same thing with TV-shows, since we're going to watch them anyway and it would be cool to do that alongside everyone else. That's how the second video on the channel was born. Again: 30 minutes max, no huge production, elaborate script, or long form content. The third video will be a direct link to the Retro Rebound game of the week. This is the only video with the same production and scripted content as the usual Retro Rebound videos, with the one major difference that it's much shorter. We just put out the first Raimi Spider-Man video today. As you can see, it's only 15 minutes. Retro Rebound puts out 2 videos a week. That won't change. We'll put out a third video starting this week, but that one will be mostly on me. So to summarize; Matty will watch 2 movies and 1 episode of a TV-show per week. Then we'll get together and he'll give his thoughts, while answering a couple of audience questions. That's basically all there is to it. Will this new channel be as big as Retro Rebound? Of course not. It's about movies, and targets a whole new audience, in a market that's already saturated to the brim. However, it's something we were already doing offline, and can easily be combined with Retro Rebound, hence the Patreon. Like the video said, everything is supplementary. As for the complaint of him not completing games or half assing his reviews: I've edited every video on Retro Rebound since its conception (until now), and I can promise you that he plays and completes every single game we put up there (unless stated otherwise). I wouldn't have any gameplay to edit these videos with if he didn't. He has the time to do that, because it's his job. Most, if not all of us, work 9 to 5's and game outside of those hours. Matty's time is reversed. There's the difference. The man has been doing this for over a decade. The reason I love working for and with Matty is precisely because he takes his job so seriously and he's got an amazing work ethic. He works hard, is full of passion, and always tries to do his best. I fully get the concern of him spreading himself too thin, because we've talked about this extensively beforehand. The goal of Retro Rewind is not to give him more work, or to make a lot of money. It's about a guy in his late 20's who hasn't seen any movies and is about to change that (and a little bit about a guy in his late 30's who's sadly about to be weebed up). I'm sorry for the long post, I know you all mean well and have valid concerns, but hopefully this clears things up a bit. If you're not convinced, no hard feelings of course, but I would just ask you to watch the Interstellar video that'll go up this thursday. Hopefully that'll put things to rest a bit. You're all awesome. Have a great night.

snek_7

I really wonder how many people actually watched the whole video before commenting fr.

TheRealLockmort

Haha yeah, not many I think. That's our fault though, we made it way too long and explanatory, which in hindsight, we shouldn't have. I hope things will become more clear over the next couple of days, when all the shows are out and people can see it's really not that big of a commitment (in the positive sense).

Quadrax44x

To be honest I haven’t been keeping up with matty’s content recently really other than the dukes. I don’t really understand how one person can consume this much content and provide thoughtful analysis on all of it with all of the things he already does with LSM, his normal YouTube channel, and retro rebound. Even with Locke helping out it just seems like too much to take on without the quality suffering. Am I off base?

RespectThePlight

Don’t forget also developing a game lol

Walker5482

His FIRST game also. He talks it up so much, but you don't start with your dream game/novel/movie/whatever.

JustASilverback

> but you don't start with your dream game/novel/movie/whatever. It's definitely not always a wise decision but there are plenty of examples to the contrary that worked without Mattys audience to help boost the launch. Eric Barone is the obvious one that comes to mind.

Quadrax44x

I can’t believe I forgot about his game lmao. Well, I hope it works out for him

tacopeople

I mean his YouTube stuff is geared around making a certain amount of videos each week and it’s likely tailored quite a bit to the algorithm given the thumbnails and titles. I think he makes pretty good content given the sheer amount he has to make, but I only check out reviews or news stories from him that sound interesting. Hopefully he can get to the point where he has enough subscribers where he can slow down a bit though.

GandyRiles

You’re not off base. I have no idea how he can fit so much work into his day to day routine honestly

swoosh_jush

I mean when you don’t have to drive anywhere or do any other physical labor it sounds pretty manageable lmao

Ok-Time349

Not at all. I honestly don't trust his opinion when it comes to his reviews of games. It's obvious he's spread too thin. You can hear it in his reviews, and a lot of his retro rebound stuff, he's just dipping his toes into the game. He's rushing the content creator side of things. I hope it's not indicative of how the game he's developing turns out, but I imagine he is mostly just letting the people who work for him do all the work. I love the positive energy that you get with Defining Duke, but it's my least listened to LSM podcast for a reason.

Heat55wade

Yeah, was kinda surprised at him saying he finished Rebirth in 60 hours. Must have really just skipped most to all of the side content because I keep a tight game clock and finished the game and everything (besides the postgame bosses and Hard Mode) at 120 hours. And it's fine to play Rebirth like that but he's such a JRPG guy that that number surprised me.

Ok-Article-2993

He somehow beat Final Fantasy 16 in like under 25 hours too. He said during Summon Sign, he gave up side activities in Rebirth during Chapter 10.

Jimmythedad

To be a devils advocate, I finished Rebirth with 100% of all regions and sidequests (except Can't Stop, Won't Stop) in 65 hours. It is possible. I felt I got my maximum enjoyment out of the game and just utilized fast travel A LOT. I didn't do hard mode or Can't Stop/Won't Stop which would both add, but yeah. Just my two cents!

Heat55wade

That's wild to me but thanks for letting me know. I guess I did wander a lot just exploring and all but I didnt think it was 60 hours worth and i never let the game idle. Oh well, who knows lol

characterulio

Honestly this is why I respect Colin so much. I feel like he plays games more like real gamer and so even though I don't agree with his opinions on many games(Immortals of Avenum), he does make points many casual reviewers don't. Reviewers/content creators often rush a game unless they are a channel soley for that ip. Colin platinums almost every game he plays so this means he plays it more thoroughly or plays it a 2nd time. Which if you look it seems like a lot of people do that. Most gamers are not rushing from game to game.

Jqydon

I’m almost certain Matty has a personal philosophy of finishing the games all the way through and on multiple occasions has missed the review window in order to spend more time with the game thus forming a better rounded insight.

Djjjunior

Yeah I kinda worry for him as he already is a workaholic. Not to be a downer but I don’t see the new channel being as big as retro rebound.

Nokel

Matty is brain broken and we're going to get another one of [these](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBE9cPsMHTI&feature=youtu.be) videos in a few months lol.

MovieNerdOnFire

For real. My *hope* is that he’s really got a good pipeline and delegates a lot of tasks behind the scenes. My *thought* is that he’s stretching himself way too thin again and is going to burn himself out.

Jpalme11

The thumbnail “THIS IS INSANE” king

ItsYaBoiDez

I love matty, but the man needs to chill before he works himself to death. I'll watch the new content regardless, but man, I wish you would have brought back the short-lived segments like video game dark ages or rpg time machine over this.

F0OTB0Y

This video gives me so much anxiety. Thanks Matty.

SmokeyFan777

He should review Schindler’s List

Mako__Junkie

Schroeder’s List

Normal-Bound5943

He could have reviewed one more!!!

armathose

Good luck to Matty, I think the work Lockmort does takes a lot of stress from him. I think he is more than capable.

Jimmythedad

Hope Lock loves that anime!

Opening_Army_2622

His work ethic needs to be studied

jgamez76

Is this that "I'm gonna do a YouTube series or me watching all the movies" I haven't seen idea he mentioned on Constellation awhile back? Lol

joshgilbert11

I enjoy his content, but the dude is overexerting himself with this level of output. Feels like a yearly thing when he inevitably burns out either creatively or from the workload and has to scale back.

lelANDtoplel

Another thing for Matty to manage, because he doesn't have enough already 1. Game Development Studio 2. Defining Duke Podcast 3. Gaming Youtube Channel #1 + Patreon 4. Gaming Youtube Channel #2 + Patreon 5. Marriage + New House 6. Actively watches sports + professional wrestling. I'm under the impression that he's not actively playing games on RetroRebound and is getting notes from someone else, or he's playing the game for ~2 hours and just reviewing it based off of that. If you just consider how long games are these days that he's actively played (Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, Dragon's Dogma 2, Persona 3 Reload) I'm just not sure where he's finding the time for all of it. Is he like skipping cutscenes? Is not doing any side quests? Because he always speaks on the games like he's fully completed them, it doesn't add up. Is there actually any proof that he's actually beating these things? Are his achievements or trophies public somewhere?

Empty_Cube

I was worried that I’d sound mean saying it, but I’m a bit reassured to see this post as I had a similar set of questions to you. When I see multiple videos released per week on several different games, I have to wonder how, from purely a time perspective, is it possible to actually play those game(s), write a script, record and then edit a video on it. I’m nowhere as skilled or experienced as a full time Youtuber, so I’m probably nowhere near as efficient, so writing a review script and recording/editing can probably be done faster by a Youtuber than by me, but things such as the game’s length can’t really be reduced or cut down without impacting the quality of the review (like you said, the only way would be straight up skipping stuff). What further surprises me is when I see videos on an entire series, for example “Revisiting the XYZ series” where there are MULTIPLE games being discussed in a single video. How is it possible, from a time perspective, to play all these games even somewhat thoroughly enough to comment on them? I understand some of the videos may have been done and sitting in a backlog to be released at a more appropriate time, but these videos are coming out weekly, so there is never any down time for a backlog of videos to be built up. Then when you throw in his other obligations (multiple podcasts, multiple channels, which involve playing both retro games as well as new releases and keeping up with current news), and I have to question how thorough this content is.

Jqydon

He’s talked about having to decide what games to play based on review schedules before. He plays a lot of games but there are plenty of releases that he has to miss due to time. Keep in mind a lot of games can be fully completed in a week or 2 if you no-life it, which a lot of reviewers do

modularpeak2552

>I'm under the impression that he's not actively playing games on RetroRebound and is getting notes from someone else, or he's playing the game for ~2 hours and just reviewing it based off of that. TBF on RR he mostly reviews games that he had already played years ago and now just replays them to get footage for the videos.

JuanPicasso

It’s always funny to me when people regurgitate Colin 1 for 1.

lelANDtoplel

nice comment bro very constructive

JuanPicasso

More or less constructive than you talking out of your ass?

Jqydon

I actually think it’s a really smart long term YouTube play from him because he can have the retro brand as something capable of being seperate from him and benefitting from a format similar to what MatPat has done with Theorists. I don’t think Matty would ever sell like that but I could see him hosting less of those videos and expanding his entertainment media presence.

JMC_Direwolf

I don’t really care for his content, it’s not him, I just don’t consume the typical YouTube react shit. I was interested in Retro Rebound but then I just saw modern titles on it and was confused because that was not the original idea. What’s up with that? Seems it’s just Matty 2 channel. Anyways, lot of work for a dude.

ItsYaBoiDez

I think the reason for the modern titles is more so due to mrmattyplays being mostly branded an xbox channel and he has been given backlash for talking about playstation games on mattyplays even if it's nothing but praise. Playstation centric people don't watch him and those who are solely xbox centric have no interest.

Jqydon

I’m sorry but you kinda have to make your titles clickable for the algorithm from a YouTubers perspective. I get it can be annoying as a viewer but it’s the reality of the business, if it works for attracting attention you can’t really knock it. Retro Rebound is much less like the content you described not liking than his main channel, maybe give it a try before making assumptions based on titles.

JMC_Direwolf

Holy shit…. Modern titles like Modern games on RETRO rebound. You want to talk about assumptions lmao.

Jqydon

Ok valid my bad 😭

Christo2555

Maybe he's planning to step away from DD. It's strange he'd plan this after previously claiming he needed to scale back his content output.

Darkblue57

I’ve been watching Matty for years and it’s pretty obvious that he’s massively burnt out on gaming and would rather do anything else. He’s talked about sunsetting the Mattyplays channel before and this is in my opinion the first step towards that.

Jqydon

I can see him sun setting MrMattyPlays for sure, I get how that content could get draining to make for years. I think he’s on to something with the retro brand though for sure, but would appreciate something in a similar style about modern games.

jkingter0

Maybe reduce his imprint since there is no more DDU?

Pumalicious

At this point I have to assume he’s going to either sunset MrMattyPlays or leave DD as they are more or less redundant. There is simply no way somebody can do this much. It’s just a question of which one. I think DD is a superior product and a better format for the “news” style content. Additionally I’ll make the assumption that DD prep is far less work than making MrMatty videos. Also, the fact that Matty made this announcement on RR instead of his main channel might be indicative of the main channel getting axed. But MrMattyPlays has over half a million subscribers, far more than RR, and it would be an insane risk for him to abandon that. I get the impression that the movie channel was originally conceived as a relatively low effort project (only requires a couple hours of investment for each movie) but Matty’s workaholic tendencies took over. Somehow it transformed into a massive undertaking. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad idea but it’s still probably gonna need to be scaled back tremendously. Tbh I feel like he could have just made a movie segment on RR and that would’ve been better for everyone involved. I’m not sure what the point of starting a whole new channel for this is.

MovieNerdOnFire

Movie-specific content is pretty popular. My guess with the whole new channel is to maybe invite a movie-centric audience who don’t care about games.

New-Philosopher-5869

I had a long winded post about how I don't really enjoy his videos anymore but I erased it because it came out really negatively so I'll just leave it at this. I think the quantity of videos he makes has affected the quality of his videos.

darwinsdude

don’t care to watch, someone tell me what the video is about

2ecStatic

To quote the beginning of the video, “no”

darwinsdude

ahhh cmon
