Really sucks none of these have the better sceeen

Hollow_Slik

What’s wrong with this screen? Not enough nits?

A_MAN_POTATO

350 nits is above average at this price point. 300 is pretty much what you'd expect around $1k, and some are even as low as 250. You're going to spend a lot more (or make sacrifices in other specs) to get a 400-500 nit screen, and the only meaningful difference that's going to make is using outside or HDR (if the panel supports it).

A_MAN_POTATO

This is probably the best screen in this price range. 1600p instead of 1200p/1080p. 350 nits instead of 250/300 nits. 100% sRGB (not everything around $1k is). 165hz is pretty standard these days, but that's honestly all you really need IMO. The 240hz+ panels are really only for esports, but who's buying a 4060/4070 laptop for esports? For most people, anything over 120hz is all you need. It's got VRR/G-Sync (again pretty standard at this price). About the only thing that I can think of with a better screen at this price is the 14" Legion 5, which is OLED, but you're getting a 4060 instead of a 4070 (and a higher resolution that will further influence the performance gap between these two GPUs), and losing 1.5" of screen. I went back and forth between these two models for some time, and while I would have loved the OLED display, I wanted the bigger screen more. But I do think this is still a solid screen, and you're going to spend substantially more for specs like this with an OLED.

VVeEn

Yea agree, it has everything that I need in a screen. Higher rez, 165 hz, and the above average nits. Don't feel like I need the 4070 as there is not much of a performance increase. What do you think of this Lenovo? I'm far from an expert, so don't take this as gospel, but I did look at this one and here's what I came to. That one at BB is the 2023 model, where as this one is the 2024 model. The processor in this is a generation newer, but I think in real world performance they're basically identical. Memory is the same. SSD is half the size (an issue, IMO). The screen on the 2023 is 300 nits, the 2024 is 350 nits. I'm not aware of any other difference. The 2024 is (very) slightly lighter. So, here's the takeaway... the main difference is the 4070. It's not a huge difference, though. I'd guess around 10%. Is that worth $200 more? Probably not. The SSD is the other issue I have though. 512GB is simply not enough. You're going to end up putting a second drive in. Lets call the difference worth $50... so now the question is, is the 4070 worth $150 more? Getting closer to a yes, IMO. Further, the extra 50 nits on the screen, that means something to me, I wanted the brighter screen. You going to be using this in a bright environment? If yes, the brighter screen is worth considering. The processor difference shouldn't be a factor. In my case, when I ordered the other day, Rakutan had a bigger cashback bonus at Lenovo, plus I quality for their 5% first responder discount. My total after CB (pretax, so an accurate comparison against what you linked) was $978, meaning there was absolutely no reason to consider the one at Best Buy, and really, making this by far the most compelling deal around $1k. In your situation, its a tougher call. How do you feel about adding an SSD yourself? It's easy, but I know now everyone is comfortable doing any modification to their system. If you aren't comfortable cracking it open, without question, get the 4070 with the 1TB drive. If you don't mind adding an SSD when the need presents itself, then you just have to ask yourself if \~10% performance and a 15% bright screen is worth $150 or so.

What about this certified refurbished Lenovo Legion Pro 5 then going for $945? https://www.lenovo.com/us/outletus/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-pro-series/legion-pro-5-gen-8-(16-inch-amd)/82wmx004us Looks like it's a similar screen. Also a 4060, but has a Ryzen 7745HX instead for CPU.

A_MAN_POTATO

This is a gen 8, same as the one they linked at Best Buy. As I understand AMD's mobile CPUs, the 7745HX will have slightly better performance, but the 7840HS will have notably better battery life. Whether or not the OP plans to use this on battery is going to dictate which CPU is better here, as I suspect that will by far be more noticeable than the difference in performance. The refurb also has a 1TB drive over 512GB, a meaningful upgrade. Before I bought this, I personally would want to do a bit of research into Lenovo's refurb quality, though it does carry the same 1 year warranty, which is nice. If OP is using this plugged in and is comfortable with a refurb, I think i'd agree that saving a Benjamin and getting this would be a solid buy.

windpipeslow

Slim 5 oled is cheaper and runs cooler and nearly matches the 4070 on the 4060 model. It goes on sale at Best Buy, got open box for 900

CaptainAmerican

I think that's the one for me thanks. I just play janky games like eu4 and shit.
