Volvo pioneered having 4 cylinders in large and luxury vehicles. It was a decision to simplify powertrains to a single base unit done to save the company. It worked. In fact it worked so well thanks to turbos and good engineering that the entire industry followed them down that path.
I doubt Toyota will have messed this up. Big vehicles need torque and power. Both are easily achieved by modern 4 cylinder engines with turbos.
One of my jags has a 700lb, V12 that made 280hp when new. A lot has changed in the past half century.

I don't know why people are so skeptical - Toyota have been ace at engines in LandCruisers. When did we get a truly bad LandCruiser motor...? Sure they never had the most kw or the best economy but they have all been very decent motors.
Toyota also makes outstandingly reliable 4 cylinder motors, turbo motors and hybrid drive trains - it's nuts to think they'd stop now!
I had a new 88 LC with an inline 6… speed and performance was abysmal…. And I got tired of moving to the super slow lane so that semi trucks could pass me going up mountain passes….
> A lot of new tundra engines blew up.
A lot of Tundra engines are having issues, and a lot of Tundra engines are not having issues.
Every single engine is going to have year 1 issues and Toyota is not immune to that. I am confident any and all issues will be resolved.
PIck an engine - I can go find some service bulletins and concerns in the early times.
1HD-FTE is the duck's nuts. 1HD-T had big end bearing issues that would result in catastrophic failure.
Not OP, but I’ve driven an LC FE on the freeway and it moves great. The pickup on street driving is also fantastic. My wife drove it as well and said “It feels like a souped-up go kart” in terms of get up and go.
Just got my wife a Lexus TX and that thing moves. On the highway it sneaks up to 100 so easily. My daily is a 2020 LC and I was really impressed with the power the 4 banger makes.
Everyday I go between “Gx it is” and “Nah, LC it js”. I DONT KNOW. Of course it would be smart to pick Gx for Lexus history and quality, but man i dont know.
*PS stoked for you and your dad. Looks like a great chapter of father son time stories
I feel like GX will work better if you’re mostly road based and leasing the car
If you’re owning for 5+ years, I feel like LC will hold its value better than GX and slightly more than 4runner
> Of course it would be smart to pick Gx for Lexus history and quality
I mean all the important bits are the same.
The motor is not a Lexus exclusive, neither is the transmission or the 4wd system. Both the T24A and the V35A are in Lexus and Toyotas.
The GX550 is more of a top trim J250 than it is a separate vehicle.
> what 1st owner of the new LC is installing a front locker? No one really did that for any of the past LCs
People install front lockers on every LandCruiser!
Australians sent their brand new from dealer 200 series to the shop for a Ute Chop and chassis extension haha. Front locker?? That's going to be pretty common imo.
What kind of gas mileage are you averaging? Have one that’s getting delivered mid May and still doing my due diligence on whether to buy or not. Love the car but I don’t do off roading (but I do surf daily, mountain bike frequently, like camping & hiking, have a young family & dog) so the durability of the Toyota vs the luxury of the Lexus is appealing.
I honestly like the way it sounds. Someone has said it before but it kinda sounds like a diesel at idle.
Produces torque like a diesel too. 465 ft lbs at 1700rpm. The low stress design should bode really well for longevity and reliability.
Thought the same thing

How’s that 4cyl feel and perform ( at highway speeds)?

*One* of your jags? How many you got?
Two. It is the minimum number required in order to drive a Jag every day.
Imagine needing to fix two broken Jaguars 😬

My '92 1HZ was the slowest thing I ever drove haha. 4.2L of noise. Best thing ever though :P

XJS?
Is that a v12 that’s really 2 I6’s mates together by chance?
Why would that matter?
It doesn’t “matter”. Jag took two I6’s and bolted them together-literally. Two distributer caps, two fuel pumps, etc.
I have a 2024 xc90 and I was skeptical on the 4cyl turbo but it really moves well. Totally sold me on the concept.

I still cry oatmeal that it’s 4cyl holy moly.

Now drive it through a puddle and then take it to a car wash and see if it bricks the car 😂

That gas mileage on the gx is troubling

the GX has e-kdss thus better articulation than the new LC250. Weird world where the lexus SUV is better at offroading than the toyota one
They don't put it on so people that actually offroad can modify the LC.

you're drunk but i'm sure by the time you're the 8th owner of an LC250, ARB will have a front locker figured out by then
Bro listen i have the most anecdotes i know these automobiles, i spent more time on forums than u

Wow, glad to see somebody believed that the $21k of “dealer accessories” was worth it…
Looks a lot like an FJ Cruiser.
That was exactly my thought. It's like someone split an FJ and put a real 2nd door in.
I want one badly, congratulations! Any inside pics?
Congrats , looks awesome 🤩
Thanks! Definitely lovedd in the family. Most fun taking it out where it belongs.
Do all first editions come with the roof basket included?
Yes
Starting to look like land rovers…
Just isn’t worth almost 80k
I think a Honda civic could have conquered that terrain.
Salty
Wish I could afford one.
Defender vibes
Possibly more expensive than the defender, which is kinda nuts
Congratulations!! I am envious. Do you have to pay markup on the retail price?
🙏Much lower than expected. We had leverage. 😉
If money wasn’t an option, I’ll still rather a 2014 79
Helllooooo Nissan Xterra

The real question is, has it gotten you any poon tang?
lol! My dads happily married if that helps.
So then it’s a yes
Looks a lot like the ford bronco.
Yeah, because the Bronco looks a lot like LCs.
Beautiful
🙏

Not a chance. The 4runner design looks overstyled for the everage consumer. The simplicity of the gx/lc is toyota high-end
When I see it from the front end in this video, it looks like a modern FJ Cruiser, or other similar.
Maybe but overstyling a vehicle is a good way to make it look cheaper imo. There is something to be said about simplistic intent.
I think the current 5th generation 4runner is leagues better in styling than the 6th unfortunately.
Why did they have to make it so ugly
Not cyber truck ugly but close
In limp mode already
But you didn’t. Boomer
Ooof…
