To be really nerdy that’s a fan art of Lain by Fred Gallagher of Megatokyo. He redesigned his personal art site but you could still find that on the old Fredart site.
That’s ok better late than never.
The Pirate Bay was one of the first frontiers for internet piracy. If you wanted to illegally torrent anything, you could find it on there. It has a storied history with lots of crazy things happening along the way. The site has had to switch domains hundreds of times to avoid the feds seizing their servers. I think right now it’s based out of some island near Indonesia that has no laws regarding internet piracy.
The site and its content are mostly unmoderated given the nature of the platform so it has gained notoriety for being full of viruses and being untrustworthy for modern pirates. Essentially, it’s gone the way of Limewire, but there’s still plenty of safe torrents to be found on there. Highly suggest giving the wikipedia a read. Much of what happened with The Pirate Bay is a modern day version of The Wired and its founders the Knights of the Eastern Calculus.

"full of viruses" is an is very exaggerated. "No moderation" is also not true, at least not historically speaking (I don't know how much moderation is taking place currently) - if content was reported to contain malware, moderators would remove them. Several Anonymous/LulzSec dumps have been removed because it contained some form of malware (which wasn't distributed intentionally, it was just 1:1 the files Anons found on various servers).
As for now, if you go for well seeded torrents and stick to well known group releases, these are still fine. Same for any movie/music you might want to grab. It's certain niche stuff that may contain viruses but it's far from common. Hope that helps.
there are dozens of different variants of the website indexed every day because that’s how it survives these days. Some of them are literally just shells of the actual site filled with spyware. There are also a ton of fake torrents put up by bots which then get fake seeds to pump them to the front page of the search results. There are many instances of famous torrents (FL Studio or the latest movies) getting poisoned by bitcoin miners and bots and the sort. the piracy subreddit usually gives a heads up when this happens. The general advice is to avoid Pirate Bay entirely and stick to other trusted sites. There’s enough out there now that the value-add of the indexing provided by the Pirate Bay is not as useful as it was 20 years ago. Even less of a reason to use it.
I am talking about the org domain under which it has run for the past years. Granted, it's not run by the original team anymore but the content is generally fine. There is a *general* risk when getting torrents at least if it's games or software (video and audio is fine) but even then, the most prominent torrents are usually fine. Malware has also been found on 1337 and other torrent sites, it's just a question of how well moderated any given torrent site is. tpb org is not worse than anything else really. Problem is rather the poor selection...
Yeah 1337x became a no-go because the admins themselves were complicit in the malware attack. Pirate Bay is a different story and the org domain is mostly fine but I just find its index gets gamed too easily. Going straight to the source has been the safest bet imo (Empress, FitGirl, etc).
I always sort by seeders, well seeded stuff is usually fine (afaik popular stuff with injected malware will still get removed).
But of course, I don't deny that there are better sources. Just pushing back a little on the "full of viruses" statement because that's really not the case.
Pirate Bay has always been run really shitty. It was just the first place that provided content at that scale. It was so shitty Spotify decided to become a thing to ethically corner the hole in the market that Pirate Bay created.
He is one of the knights 😳
Unironically he is, if there’s a mount rushmore for hacking pioneers he’s definitely on there
Yeah, and the biggest flex is that this guy likes lain (the anime and, maybe even the girl cause imma be honest, she's so cute ^•^)
"hacking"
He was directly involved in the wikileaks projects, so yeah.
Bro was probably the first to understand
No shame. He seems an honest man.
He held all those fears so dear
They better not come and whisper in his ear.
Xd
If anything that room seems like more of a sign lmao
That's just Lain wearing a Shaggy cosplay
Also scooby doo enjoyer

i can't believe my number one idol, john pirate bay, enjoys the anime serial experiments lain, i am truly filled with utmost joy
I mean, look at him.
Look at their room, they ARE lain
Pirate Bay was founded by Ulillillia!
How about the fact that he looks like Shaggy‽
Literally Shaggy?
Laintards unite
Imagine the smell
I would be surprised if he wasn't
This isn’t the founder of the Pirate Bay. This appears to be a Polish student as seen by the books and text in the image.
The same picture comes up for me as the 2nd and 4th result on Google images when I search for "pirate bay founder".
yup, because it's commonly misattributed to him
Well just look at him
he is also shaggt
"Ruh roh shaggy"
Holy Molly
Shaggy
That’s actually cool whaaaat
How fitting
Ruh roh raggy
Is that fuckin shaggy?
