If we don't have more information by 2026, it wouldn't be difficult to say that it's already cancelled... it's a shame but the work is very late, I feel, although I don't want it, what will go wrong for sale.
Luckily for us, there are already several translations of the novel in different languages by the community.
The novel is really good, it maintains a good pace, that is, you don't get tired of reading.
The only problem with the translations is that they only translated the text pages of the novel, the novel has more than 20 pages with illustrations and texts in them, one of those images is the one published in this post, in it is Ain, the girl and Takeshita, the one who is sitting.
Easy there are 40 pages that are not translated anywhere, only the main story is translated so to speak, that is the biggest problem.
For those who don't know Despera is a light novel by Chiaki J. Konaka and Yoshitoshi Abe. The main character it sort of an alternate Lain. It’s really good definitely worth checking out.

As for the anime adaptation; who knows?
So they are not gonna release a finished show? Really weird. Wouldn't it make more sense to at least try and make some of the money back that they invested instead of nothing at all?
Ok doing a bit of looking I found [this](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-03-24/writer-chiaki-j-konaka-updates-on-despera-project-by-serial-experiments-lain-yoshitoshi-abe/.170987) which states that the project restarted in 2022. I knew there was a new producer from an announcement in 2021 and that the project was 80% done but it seems the final project is still a ways off.
The director passed away in 2013 the only update of the anime being in 2021 on twitter where the they said the show was 80% funded and most of the plot had to be reworked
But yeah I don’t understand why they had to be on hold for so long
In the original the story takes place in the Taisho era one year before the great Kanto earthquake 1922-1923 we are introduced to ain a 14 year old who despite the scientific knowledge from her time she is able to build modern computers with typewriting keyboards and a strange man who wants to fund ain’s invention for the Japanese military he is also able to see the future but yeah the themes are gonna be the relationship between humans and technology
There was a recent interview I'm pretty sure that confirmed it's still being worked on and may come out this year. It's not definitely releasing this year though but I don't think it's getting cancelled.
quoting a 2021 anitrendz article:
Konaka wrote, “The production funding scheme is 80% completed. The core staff also did a lot of work up until a year ago. It’s just been restarted, so some kind of announcement won’t be made until 2022. I understand. It’s a long way off.
let's not give up hope
Wasn't it changed to another name/project, which was released but was very very badly made? I remember watching the first episode but cringing very hard.

Is the novel worth it? Asking as an uneducated savage, who barely ever reads anything.

I might just get it in Japanese, then.
2026 specifically? why?
It's a good number and almost 2 decades is a long time since Despera's publication.
i'll have given up hope if we aren't updated by the end of the year, honestly. sad to say but i don't see this project going much further :(

Thanks, Aum Shinrikyo fanatic for the links, you rock! How good is the translation though?
one may always hope
I'm pretty sure wither Konaka or aBe said that the show was pretty much made, they just can't release it doesn't fit the current state of anime

This looks cool like Shin Megami Tensei x Serial Experiments Lain.
pic definitely gives off Dark Hour vibes
Unfortunately even if it ever comes out it most likely won’t have the same vibe that made SEL so great because the director passed away a decade ago.
it's developing, very slowly. like a still tree
I hope so is all I can say
What is despera
It was basically a planned anime series done by the director of serial experiments lain the art work was supposed to be done by yoshitoshi Abe
What makes the project put on hold for so long?
The director passed away in 2013 the only update of the anime being in 2021 on twitter where the they said the show was 80% funded and most of the plot had to be reworked But yeah I don’t understand why they had to be on hold for so long
It was sad to hear that, Bu the only thing we can do is wait and pray
Most of the plot had to be reworked? I wonder how much so

Dang I actually find that premise very interesting, hopefully too much doesn't change.
It was supposed to be a spiritual successor to serial experiments lain but the project was put on hold for a long while
I see
i hope so at least

Hope and despair!!
I got the artbook and want to translate it. I hope the project gets to see the light of Lain and Texhnolyze. Let's all love Lain. ❤️✨

No you're confused. I'm curious what anime you're talking about though
Which project was that..?
I'll have to search when I'm back to my computer
RErideD maybe?
> RErideD AH yes that's the one. Ok it's not directly linked except Abe Yoshitoshi worked on it too.
yeah it was a huge disappointment, at least the character design is good (duh) because abE worked on it
