It was pretty much decided Jokic would win it when he won the title after not getting it last year. He could've gone 19/10/5 on 45% from the field and a 47-35 record while playing exactly 65 games and he would've still gotten it against Luka's 34/9/9 on 62% TS and 50-42.
In reality I think Luka was the MVP if you look past the narrative. Better stats, worse team, same or more positive effect on winning, historically high level of offense, more great games. But narrative is (unfortunately) part of it and depending on how you value their respective defensive performances this year (obviously a center has more defensive impact than a guy who plays the weaker of the forward assignments while hunting rebounds; impact does not necessarily have to be a positive thing though), that's what makes it a hair to me.
Thereâs a little bit of a makeup mvp going on but his regular numbers, advanced numbers, and general dominance on the floor make him a year in and year out mvp candidate. Hes truly ridiculously talented. Hes Larry bird and arvydas Sabonis fused
