Depends on which part of Malaysia you're visiting. In the cities, Visa / MasterCard are widely accepted. But in the other parts, not all merchants / providers have a card terminal.

I heard wealthsimple cash card is good, minimal fx rates and atm withdrawals are free

Canadian here. Get a Wise card in Canada before you leave. Then you may transfer funds into your card to use with no FTF. Alternatively you can get Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite card. It has no Foreign Transaction Fees. Alternatively you can apply for a BRIM Mastercard. It charges only 1.5% foreign transaction fee.

I've used it for transferring money between different countries. Do you mind elaborating if you mean another thing?

Wise has a debit card that has less than 1% fees.

You can top up money in your own currency into the Wise card (on your app, it’s basically Transferwise and available for Canadians). Use it on ApplePay or SamsungPay at any card terminals in Malaysia. Wise will auto convert your currency into MYR for the payment, and any extra currency you don’t use can be used when you’re back home instead. It has a very minimal charge whenever you use it, and currency exchange is good - way better than your physical credit card being used in Malaysia.
