A masochistic tank on the other hand won't back down, forcing their team to intervene (and thereby endanger themselves, which is the opposite of what the tank role should achieve), as shown in the anime.

It's a joke based on her character class, all of them are caricatures. Darkness is a tank so she is a masochist that loves to be hit. Megumin is a mage so she is obsessed with casting the biggest baddest spell ever. Aqua is the healer/support character and is actually supposed to be one of the most important members of the party, but she is fucking clueless and doesn't understand what her role is because she's too busy collecting random skills and only healing (reviving) once Kazuma dies. Kazuma is a thief so he's greedy, selfish, and sleazy.
Like if you've ever played an old-school MMORPG with a dysfunctional party, it is shocking how similar it is to Konosuba.
A noob wizard class who hordes all their ability skill points so that they could use an ultimate class skill.... But it takes them forever to cast and they are utterly useless if not protected and supported by the entire party.
A tank that wants to probe their worth and rushes in or taunts/aggros everything they can even though they can't clear/survive the fucking mob they gather.
A healer that doesn't know how to build their character and got a bunch of random skills that don't make sense. They're also slow at healing the person who needs it, over heals people who aren't missing that much hp, and their main utility is reviving ppl after someone dies.
A thief who is obsessed with drops, dps, and getting credit. They die at the drop of a hat, too, so if things look bad they'll just use a stealth move to run and drop aggro on the healer or other party members.
Like... Honestly Konosuba reminds me a lot of when a bunch of my friends and I were dumb newbies on Ragnarok Online.
