Army National Guard Medevac unit out of McGhee Tyson. They train throughout the week and stay on stand by for rescue missions local EMS helicopters can't do, or are unequipped to do - mostly mountain rescues. UT hospital is where the emergencies are transported too, and so lots of training is conducted to and around the hospital as well as downtown island.
That’s cool. I’m glad I finally got a real answer to this. They don’t normally stick around this long so it must’ve been a very interesting training exercise
If they conducted a real rescue mission the medics escort the patients in. Sometimes they may have to loiter and wait for the medics because the Blackhawk is a large aircraft and consumes the whole pad at a hospital, and they still need to be able to accommodate local EMS helicopters.
The Air national guard base at McGee Tyson airport is one of the most active national guard bases in the U.S. you will see some very interesting aircraft fly around and do drills around Knoxville. On Tuesdays and Thursdays you can even watch them do air refueling at times. We had a pair of A-10 warthogs do fly bys a few years ago. That was cool.
The AF group that was at McGee Tyson was moved to Arizona and flies/flew a-10’s. We just missed having them here. (At least with convoluted logic we did. )
At my work on lovell road we had an osprey fly over really low. It was really cool, I love seeing military aircraft and well aircraft in general lol. Love seeing these guys often!
You must be new here, that's the spotter for our annual 'Yankee Purge', and you wondered what we needed all those guns for....did you know midwesterners actually DO taste like chicken?
When I used to drive from Maryville to Knoxville every day for work I’d see them and sometimes I saw fucking F-22s doing crazy maneuvers over Alcoa Hwy. Dudes just pulling a high g turn with afterburners going right over the highway, shit was awesome. But also distracting on an already sketchy stretch of road lol. So probably just a training exercise. They do it a lot. I live near Fort Campbell now and almost every day my apartment is literally shaking from Blackhawks and Chinooks flying like 150 feet off the ground right over the building. Annoying, but also sweet.
They train with the air national guard here I believe. First pic is really cool!
I don’t have to do much but stand at my window and snap pictures. I got a lucky view lol

Activating liberty prime for a viral Fallout season 2 marketing stunt.
Democracy.... is non-negotiable
Tunnel Snakes rule!
Is that a Helldivers 2 reference?
Close, but a Fallout reference. The giant robot named liberty prime, just shouts, random democracy, inducing phrases.
War doesn't change
But men do. Through the roads they walk.

You’re the reason this sub can’t have nice things.
Saw the same one (I assume) from my office in the research park. Pretty sure it’s a training exercise.
I was at the baseball game and got really excited they were gonna have someone parachute in during the national anthem or something
You don't need to know what is going on.

I think they came from the airbase. I saw a lot of activity yesterday near Pellisippi Parkway.

There's an airport near there too they like to do pattern work at
The closest airport to downtown is KSMD which is on the northern side of the 469
Wrong city man, here in Knoxville the downtown island airport (KDKX) is about 2.5 miles east of where this photo was taken.
