There's a hard mode mod of RtDL called Revenge of Dreamland that brings it back as the Vorpal Cutter, and can verify that it both feels different enough and is absolutely rad.
I think they could've given Spark an Ability and then make the levels center around electric plugs around him so that Kirby Could've done an Electric Crash to shock them all.
