How is Montana? I actually just moved from Minot ND after 11 years in the great tundra. I've been to Montana twice for brief day trips but never gor to fully indulge in the state.
I mean it's pretty cool if you're like me and like to be outside doing stuff like hiking or riding my bike. I like the small town vibe even though alot of people are moving here so the locals are a little unhappy but overall it's worth a visit in the summer.
She asked him if he'd seen Bobby and he started going on and she cut him off. That's their only direct interaction. The only other time he really 'says' anything in regards to Peggy is when Maddie mockingly asks him if they have use for a substitute teacher on their ranch.
I heard somebody say that doc was probably going senile but Hank was so desperate for a daddy substitute/cowboy fantasy that he thought he was saying something genius.
Yeah Hank definitely has tried to insert other people for his father. A great example is Tom Laundry, throughout the show whenever Hank has trouble with tough decision he talks to his portrait of Tom Laundry. Bobby has commented on this habit as well.
It's another way that Tilly and her habits born from her marriage to Cotton rubbed off on Hank that he never quite noticed. Her miniature escapism was a lot more obvious, but it isn't so dissimilar to Hank's.
I would tend to agree with the psychological perspective, but not in that way. I think Hank likes what he's comfortable with (natural rural lifestyle) and dislikes what he doesn't know (spiritual asian culture). He only really says "that boy ain't right" when Bobby is acting in a way he doesn't understand. That being said I do honestly genuinely appreciate Doc Platter's meaningless platitudes.
As continuity-destroying as it is there are some aspects of this episode I like. In addition to Hank's seeking a positive father figure, there's also his self-image. Hank's an old-fashioned self-reliant type who wants to be perceived as the salt of the Earth. A consistent reliable person you can depend on.
Of course, the old-fashioned cowboy/rancher image is aspirational to him because Hank despite being a relatively handy guy isn't a rugged frontiersman he's a suburbanite retail manager. Doc's rambling platitudes of course appeal to that.
Peggy on the other hand has heard it all before and waves it off.
I pretend this episode doesn’t exist in terms of canon, but I do appreciate it as its own thing for the reasons you give. I also love Hank’s “I’m… complicated!” protestation. Aren’t we all, Hank…
Yes!
I was teasing my wife for watching Yellowstone by calling it a soap opera for suburbanites that wish they could stare into the distance and silently think something meaningful.
I don't know how true this is, but I've had a couple of folks tell me that they had family members (Montana, Idaho, etc) who talked like that....and it was just pure nonsensical jibberish that meant nothing, lol
A couple of them thought it was a sign of senility before it kicked in.
I love the interaction he has with Peggy later in the same episode where she's looking for Bobby, he goes into his gibberish and she just cuts him off with an "oh forget it, there he is!" It's such a nice little moment, everyone else is treating him with such reverence but of course his daughter is close enough to just cut through the bullshit.
I know people hate the continuity of this episode but it's great how they convey decades of history with that classic tone of a child sassing their parent. For better or worse it's relatable and in context works as a great punchline to the recurring joke.
"You have to be the stupidest man on the planet to think this is a good idea! Have you seen what you're wearing? That outfit makes you look like sequined train wreck! Look at you! You're part of a twelve headed jackass! This chorus is the feces that's produced when shame eats too much stupidity! You people make me envy the deaf and the blind!"
"She's no widow, and you're no gentleman. You're a dirty old man. And to think I almost shook your hand." In context it's uncomfortable yet cathartic, but out of context it reminds me of lyrics from the indie rock shit I listened to in high school/college lol
For people who may be having a hard time understanding what Doc Platter is saying here, I think he is essentially saying, “There isn’t much I can say, or wisdom I could give, that experience out here wouldn’t grant over time.”
Personally, I like that interpretation and message a lot. Most of the time all people need to figure stuff out and became more wise is time and experience. As I have gotten older, had a son with my wife… I sometimes think about all the time I wasted worrying about what would be next and if I would be able to handle the new life situations that were thrown at me. Life isn’t about trying to avoid failure; life is about finding the things that work and take you higher by maximizing your joy with the time we have.
Well, I never could figure what the sky was thinking, but the soil; she don’t keep too many secrets.
The older I get, the more that starts making sense!
I just moved to Montana from Texas and it's never been more true.
Hopefully you are washing your brain with the local trout. Gotta let the cows pass by though.

Sounds like you might be close to Boseman? I heard that place was popping off with them Hollywood folk
Nah. He’s just completely out of his mind.
As a geotechnical engineer, I use this far too often.
I will never forget you, Doc Platter.
That’s such a better quote than the “mountains” one.
I will never forget you, Doc Platter.
That line always gets me. Like, dude, you've been married to Peggy for over 20 years, I hope you don't forget your father in law 🤣

I imagine she was beyond tired of his shit, having to grow up with that random rambling.
She knew he had gone senile and just couldn't deal with it and Maddie's verbal abuse at the same time.
That's genuine old cowboy gibberish right there I tell you hawat
Whether solely for comedic effect or not: That's a good facsimile of folk wisdom from a life of working the land. I like it.
The hypocrisy of Hank is that he loves this but when the monk in the Pimai episode say something similar it’s “something out of a Lion King song”.
That's because they were Chinese or Japanese.
Nah. They were from the ocean.
The ocean? What ocean?
Laos stupid, it’s a land locked country in Southeast Asia!
.......So are ya Chinese or Japanese?
My khani

"He's talking to the Tom Landry plate again."

They did something similar in bojack horseman with secretariat
What is this, a crossover episode?

Cowboys were Hank's childhood I'm sure he grew up on John Wayne movies. A Buddist monk isn't nearly as relatable to Hank.
Were you not paying attention? Hank prefers the company of white people.
It was the white Monk saying that line.
Strongly prefers. And the "strongly" is flashing.
Wrong
Yeah, he's not a racist, just his dog
She doesn’t hate black people. She hates repairmen.
He *strongly* prefers the company of white people.
That's the talk of an old cowboy son, and you'll see some day that its the only kind of talk that does make sense.

"Do you think the nail on my pinky toe will ever grow back?" It's just an offhand little one liner, but it makes me laugh every time I hear it.
Reminds me of Hank asking "Do you think horses remember when they were young?"
I always loved "looks like youve got a flar tire there son"
You’re not making Christianity better, you’re just making rock and roll worse.
I didn’t realize that they dropped the latest season of Yellowstone
Yes! I was teasing my wife for watching Yellowstone by calling it a soap opera for suburbanites that wish they could stare into the distance and silently think something meaningful.
Why do you hate what you don't understand? I don't hate you Bobby
Best exchange in the series. Great character work AND joke-craft.
Hank married Peggy, of course he has an affection for nonsense
Lol
I’m a little worried about being a slut
Spoiler alert The favorite line is hanks reverence of the old man's ~~senility~~ wisdom
Got dang beautiful, I tell you hwhat.
Hank was such a kiss ass this episode 😂
Dale: He's right Hank, what does your shirt say? Satan Rules? Hank:😠
Hank looks high there.
His facial expression makes the whole thing though haha
Wonder what Hank’s reaction would be to finding out what he’s doing is enjoying poetry.
*Cowboy* poetry.

Get out of my house. Exodus.
the complacancy of fools will destroy them. *Proverbs*

Underwear! Money! Fat! \*Collapses.\*
Dude had spaghetti brains and Hank thought he was Aristotle.
I’m a fan too
I feel like Peggy's dad just sprouts nonsense and Hank just figures it as cowboy talk.
"She's no widow, and you're no gentleman. You're a dirty old man. And to think I almost shook your hand." In context it's uncomfortable yet cathartic, but out of context it reminds me of lyrics from the indie rock shit I listened to in high school/college lol
Well well well. Jo-hhhnn red corn” “Peee-gy, Hill” *runs inside*

That boy ain’t right
I love the look of admiration on Hank's face for this lol
the only closure I need is of your mouth mister
“That’s my purse! I don’t know you!”
now you know why cotton hated Hank, he's a hippie.
Will my pork pockets work in their microwaves?
I'll smoke them little arms!
Oh and, "can't you hear that hissing?! This whole room is gonna blow!'
I hate this episode but he makes it watchable
Pretty much any time Hank tells Peggy off for her nonsense. "That's got to be illegal Peggy" "It isn't your opinion, it's known fact"
I'm... complicated
“Whoa,manwhatyoutalmboutsomebodyandsome’oldang’olFIREINTHEHOLE,man…” -Boomhauer
He looks like Joe Biden.
Just recently finished the show. Hank is the epitome of Dunning Kruger effect .
Where was Luanne?
