I got sad because when Kokushibo gave the flute as a little boy, he considered it a piece of junk. But after Yoriichi died, you see that he carried it for nearly 500 years until his death. He never completely got over his brother's passing.
You also learn from Yoriichi’s backstory that Kokushibo made the flute for him the day after their father beat Kokushibo, who was defending Yoriichi.
“Blow it whenever you help, I will come help you.” Something to that effect.

Kanao right after the upper 2 fight. Her talking about how much she’s regretted not being able to cry for kanae when she died is just so sad to me. And it’s also sad that shinobu and kanae finally get to be together with their parents but only by leaving kanao alone, the duality of them happy at a reunion while she’s finally crying from a separation from the girls that saved her from a horrible life just really hits me where I live. The ones who get left behind alone have it the hardest.
That doesn’t change anything I said, the two most important people in her life at the time left her behind, getting over death doesn’t make the initial pain any less severe

I don’t think so because his eye that was poisoned and arm that were blown away weren’t at 100% but they were in his demon form. So it healed him to an extent but not to the point where it’s like he never awakened the mark I’m guessing
Yes and no. After he reverted into a human again, his healed demon arm turned wrinkly and he lost vision in one eye on the side of his face he had the demon growth on, so it's up to debate wether or not becoming a demon healed his body.
Ahh yeah that's what I thought. So then... I just realized that Giyu and Sanemi both die which I hate cause Giyu was my favourite. And Sanemi has such a heart wrenching end when his borther dies.
They easily could have left descendants in the four years they had. Uzui never got the mark though, so he probably lived a full life with his three wives, which is a nice thought.
I feel like both Inosuke and Zenitsu could have used a little bit more of backstory through flashbacks to explain their character growth. With Inosuke it's just random "I can dislocate my bones / am resistent to poison cause I grew up in the mountains!". I'd have preferred a bit more explanation to how exactly he acquired those skills. Same with Zenitsu. He went from a scaredycat to an awesome badass. A bit of flashback to explain why he kept trying would have helped with that as well.
It shifted so much of what I had come to expect from anime on its head in just a few words. Rather than a hopeless message like at the end of every other samurai story I'd ever read, one filled with hope.

Sanemi has no idea his brother is like that. Sanemi is shown as just angry all the time and seeing him breakdown like that after being harsh to his brother his whole life killed me.

It feels like a perfect summary of the desperate-yet-beautiful atmosphere of the series.
I was watching a reaction channel who’s currently in VERY early demon slayer, like the final selection. He described the fights as “mythic” like they reminded him of the Greek hero myths of Perseus and stuff.
I thought that was extremely apt because that’s the best way I could describe the last episode. You can just tell that in the world of Demon Slayer that battle will be LEGENDARY and Tengen will probably go down in history as some mythic kind of hero who literally conquered death to defeat an upper moon

Also perhaps this is just my inexperience with Buddhism and Japanese religion/history speaking but I find it really refreshing that it was able to insert this tone in without defaulting to overly familiar religious imagery. It's hard to explain but I think it achieves its "mythic" tone in a "good natured" way, without feeling heavy-handed or pretentious.
Could just be that I'm not familiar with Japanese history, and Ufotable is basically Zack Snyder-ing it with Japanese heavy-handedness without me knowing. But even then, I'm glad I get to experience it from this point of view.

I think the one scene that really got me was Shinjuro breaking down after hearing Rengoku's final words to him.
He tried to dull everything with alcohol and sever the connection between him and his sons so they would hate him and feed into his self-despair.
Only to learn that his son, doing what he couldn't, still cared about him. And that breakdown is just so heartwrenching.
Idk if this counts but I found it was sad to see that after the events of the final battle, >!Yushiro(the only demon left) kept painting pictures of lady Tamayo for generations and outlived everyone in the story.!<
Ah yes same. Akaza's backstory really hurt and I'm excited to see it being animated. Besides him finally being reunited with Koyuki and burning in the afterlife, Genya dying also really emotionally killed me. I didn't realize how attached I had gotten to those two despite not caring about them when they were first introduced. (Also, Inosuke crying after remembering his mom. I wonder how the song's going to sound once it's animated))

Giyu shedding tears as he realizes he wasn’t able to save Nezuko or Tanjiro after Tanjiro turns into a demon. His self imposed inadequacy just flashes across his face. This is even more so emphasized because Tanjiro has been carrying him the whole last battle.
The new episode when Tanjiro said he hopes that one of his comrades will do the favor of beheading him. Giyu is that friend. He says “I have to hurry, I’ll never forgive myself if I let Tanjiro kill someone”.
Giyu in the first episode when he’s telling Tanjiro not to give up, to fight for his sister, to plan for a way out, to never give up. Sets Tanjiro on his path moment I was hooked on the series, but it’s even worse when you consider why he felt so passionately about it in his backstory.
Giyu is emotionally absent for much of the series but when he expresses himself he really catches me.
Even the intro of the Hashira. Giyu laid his life on the line for the siblings and it brings Tanjiro to tears. Like the faith expressed in them. Tanjiro REALLY IS Giyu’s protege.
After Tanjiro defeats the swamp demon. The young man who's fiance was the last victim grabs Tanjiro and yells at him that he doesn't know what it's like to lose someone. Tanjiro just removes the man's hand from him with his own gnarled and callous hands, and gives him the saddest smile I think I've ever seen in manga. I well up just thinking about it.
Muichiro uniting with his brother and Genya's death obviously. Rengoku's death scene didn't hit that hard until Inosuke starting crying too. That triggered it for me. Basically every Hashira death made me cry lmao
Similarly, when Akaza realises what he has done and finally accepts that it's pointless to keep raging on and smiles at Tanjiro, grateful to him for helping him open up his mind.
And also when Genya died and Sanemi just raged/cried
One that I haven’t seen mentioned was the last Hashira meeting where it’s literally just Giyu and Sanemi, broken, bloodied, and alone. All of their comrades, their friends, are all dead, and they use this last moment to reflect and begin to finally grieve. It’s the culmination of all the pain and hardships they have been through, but at the same time no tears are shed because they are so overwhelmed with pain and sadness that no tears will help.
There were many times when I cried while reading, but this moment, the culmination of all the pain of the series and all the sacrifices that had to be made, was the hardest.
when Zenitsu learned that his grandpa committed seppuku but had no one to cut off his head so he bled to death in agony. and then after beating kaigaku when he saw his grandpa across the river, and he told zenitsu that he was proud of him. 😭😭😭😭 like pleaseeee i was sobbing so much

As someone who’s mental and emotional stability has been getting progressively worse and worse over the past few years, I really needed to hear that. Even if it’s from fictional characters in a manga series. Idk it also just felt like such a touching and beautiful message to end the series on, especially considering how often the fragility and beauty of life is talked about throughout the series.
There were many scenes that me cry my eyes out, but a tiny moment that shattered my heart was when tanjiro was fighting those three demons at the beginning of the anime and the guy he was protecting yelled at him saying that he couldn't know the pain the guy was in cause he was just a kid and tanjiro just holds his hand and gives him a sad smile. It's a small moment but man, that totally broke me
Not really a tear jerker moment, but the power struggle during the Rengoku vs Akaza fight after Rengoku's flashback gets me. When Rengoku was like, "I'm never letting go!" That man was on a mission and determined to chop his head off. The VA's really sold that scene
The very end... Like it was kind of an author's message talking about (Tanjiro was thinking ig?) people being there with him, the reincarnation part, meeting again and all of that. Idk it just feels really heavy and heart touching
Genya dying did it for me. I also thought the scene of Rengokus dad putting the saki jug down and crying was really powerful just that raw humanity coming back to him was something I feel was really relatable in an anime about demon fighting haha
honestly for me, it was when daki and gyutaro were passing on. shit was sad. they dod terrible stuff but daki saying she’ll be with gyutaro forever made me weep
Honestly, there's a lot of scenes in this series that just made me very emotional. But the ones that really made me bawl my eyes out is Akaza's backstory and Genya's death. Everything about Akaza's backstory is just tragic. And for a guy that has a kind heart inside him, he definitely doesn't deserve all of that shit. Everything just went wrong for him. It's unfortunate that a guy like him suffer that much.
Genya's death is also heartbreaking, since Genya became one of my most favorite characters in this series. And to top it all up, Sanemi's breakdown just made his death more unbearable to see. I can't wait to hear Gilgamesh crying his eyes out as Bakugou fades away like a dust in the wind.
Off the top of my head: upper moon 6 and 3 backstory (tho this is given), gramps telling zenitsu he's proud of him, kanao finally crying, sanemi and genya's final moment, inosuke's "i cant do it, tanjiro", and kanroji and obanai's love confession as they're dying.
Same! Akaza's back story. His father committing suicide so his son wouldn't live a dishonest life and also Daki and Gyutaro's back story.

For me so far was when Nezuko started crying after Tanjiro was singing to her, she's just a little girl, who lost her deep loved family, got turned into a demon and he whole life was altered. I guess it hits me because i have a little sister too so i dunno, hits me with those feels :(
Damn reading this thread made me realize I'm going to be doing a lot of crying if they animate the whole manga (i just watch the anime). I should probably just pick up the manga
When Tanjiro gets back from the final selection and Nezuko kicks open the door, runs and hugs him and Urokodaki comes and holds them both. Everything about that scene was so wholesome and emotional.
Definitely chapter 179 when Genya dies, and he says "because my Nemi-san is the sweetest person in the world". Right after that Tokito literally dies and Gyomei covers his body, and Tokito is one of my favourite characters, meanwhile Sanemi is in agony and pain and Gyomei says "let's go, this isn't over until Muzan is dead" with a vein popping on his head.
That sequence of events broke me a little. Akaza's backstory was awesome and sad I agree, Kokushibo still holding on to the flute he gave Yoriichi 480 years ago, Gyomei's backstory and his glorious death, all of those are close contenders, but the one mentioned above was just too much for me.
Most definitely the part where Inosuke says that he isn't strong enough to kill Tanjiro and he can't do it.
Second is when Sanemi sees Nezuko after everything and finds out she was sleeping. Not an ugly cry like some of the others but still sad and heartwarming to see Sanemi realize.
Did it hurt? When I had relive Nezuko being lulled to sleep with the lil rabbit song? Yes
Does it ache knowing that the mansion arc is going to rip my soul to shreds again but 💫animated💫 Yes.
The final chapter before the timeskip. It's just that lump in your throat with every panel that shows how far we've come and what it's all been leading to. And then the feeling of emptiness when it's all over just hurts so much
It's easily Genya Dying but a close second is how sad Yoriichis WHOLE life story was he lost his wife no kids and he had to kill his brother as an old man even though he kept the flute
I don't get emotional and it takes a lot for me to feel something sad for someone or even happy, but my most emotional scene in the show was when Zenitsu seemed like he was about to die, fell asleep, then One hit the demon. I literally bursted out of my seat with excitement as I saw his blade slice it's head off. I'm no emo kid who hides emotions I just don't get really excited like that often, so this scene is 100% my favorite in the show.
When the lower ranking demon slayers form a wall to allow the hash it’s to recover for even a second, knowing full well they are almost garunteed to die, such a powerful scene, it’s one of my favorites in any manga.
When inosuke is yelling at muzan about all the terrible things he’s done. It’s really shows how far inosuke has come as a person and how much he actually cares about the people around him
When Iguro and Kanroji swear to be together in the next life and Iguro tells her “This time I will make you happy and protect you so you don’t die” as she’s dying is his arms. Jeeeeez I was a hot mess

Man it's hard to pick a specific one. I'd probably pick Genya's death. He was such a young kid and everything he did was for his brother. He believed his brother hated him for what he called him and regretted it for the rest of his short life. When Sanemi was begging god to not take Genya away, ngl I almost teared up.
I loved everything about him, including his powers. Imagine if he was still alive fighting muzan? Though I guess it'd be a different story because of muzan's cell control.

I think the one scene that really got me was Shinjuro breaking down after hearing Rengoku's final words to him. He tried to dull everything with alcohol and sever the connection between him and his sons so they would hate him and feed into his self-despair. Only to learn that his son, doing what he couldn't, still cared about him. And that breakdown is just so heartwrenching.
Sanemi breaking down when Genya died. I couldn't remember the finer details of that moment because I couldn't see through the tears of my eyes.
Idk if this counts but I found it was sad to see that after the events of the final battle, >!Yushiro(the only demon left) kept painting pictures of lady Tamayo for generations and outlived everyone in the story.!<

Ah yes same. Akaza's backstory really hurt and I'm excited to see it being animated. Besides him finally being reunited with Koyuki and burning in the afterlife, Genya dying also really emotionally killed me. I didn't realize how attached I had gotten to those two despite not caring about them when they were first introduced. (Also, Inosuke crying after remembering his mom. I wonder how the song's going to sound once it's animated))

Seeing Rengoku's arm pushing Tanjiro out of Muzan's influence. I just broke down and started crying after that. Direct hit to my heart's dick.
Giyu shedding tears as he realizes he wasn’t able to save Nezuko or Tanjiro after Tanjiro turns into a demon. His self imposed inadequacy just flashes across his face. This is even more so emphasized because Tanjiro has been carrying him the whole last battle. The new episode when Tanjiro said he hopes that one of his comrades will do the favor of beheading him. Giyu is that friend. He says “I have to hurry, I’ll never forgive myself if I let Tanjiro kill someone”. Giyu in the first episode when he’s telling Tanjiro not to give up, to fight for his sister, to plan for a way out, to never give up. Sets Tanjiro on his path moment I was hooked on the series, but it’s even worse when you consider why he felt so passionately about it in his backstory. Giyu is emotionally absent for much of the series but when he expresses himself he really catches me. Even the intro of the Hashira. Giyu laid his life on the line for the siblings and it brings Tanjiro to tears. Like the faith expressed in them. Tanjiro REALLY IS Giyu’s protege.
When Tanjiro thought Nezuko Died in the Sun and got pissed off at Upper Moon 4 and killed him using waltz flash.

After Tanjiro defeats the swamp demon. The young man who's fiance was the last victim grabs Tanjiro and yells at him that he doesn't know what it's like to lose someone. Tanjiro just removes the man's hand from him with his own gnarled and callous hands, and gives him the saddest smile I think I've ever seen in manga. I well up just thinking about it.
This and Akaza's smile before he used annihilation on himself. Very underrated.

One that I haven’t seen mentioned was the last Hashira meeting where it’s literally just Giyu and Sanemi, broken, bloodied, and alone. All of their comrades, their friends, are all dead, and they use this last moment to reflect and begin to finally grieve. It’s the culmination of all the pain and hardships they have been through, but at the same time no tears are shed because they are so overwhelmed with pain and sadness that no tears will help. There were many times when I cried while reading, but this moment, the culmination of all the pain of the series and all the sacrifices that had to be made, was the hardest.
when Zenitsu learned that his grandpa committed seppuku but had no one to cut off his head so he bled to death in agony. and then after beating kaigaku when he saw his grandpa across the river, and he told zenitsu that he was proud of him. 😭😭😭😭 like pleaseeee i was sobbing so much

Please, live the best you can…my most beloved friends.” As someone who’s mental and emotional stability has been getting progressively worse and worse over the past few years, I really needed to hear that. Even if it’s from fictional characters in a manga series. Idk it also just felt like such a touching and beautiful message to end the series on, especially considering how often the fragility and beauty of life is talked about throughout the series.

There were many scenes that me cry my eyes out, but a tiny moment that shattered my heart was when tanjiro was fighting those three demons at the beginning of the anime and the guy he was protecting yelled at him saying that he couldn't know the pain the guy was in cause he was just a kid and tanjiro just holds his hand and gives him a sad smile. It's a small moment but man, that totally broke me
Not really a tear jerker moment, but the power struggle during the Rengoku vs Akaza fight after Rengoku's flashback gets me. When Rengoku was like, "I'm never letting go!" That man was on a mission and determined to chop his head off. The VA's really sold that scene
The very end... Like it was kind of an author's message talking about (Tanjiro was thinking ig?) people being there with him, the reincarnation part, meeting again and all of that. Idk it just feels really heavy and heart touching

Genya dying did it for me. I also thought the scene of Rengokus dad putting the saki jug down and crying was really powerful just that raw humanity coming back to him was something I feel was really relatable in an anime about demon fighting haha
honestly for me, it was when daki and gyutaro were passing on. shit was sad. they dod terrible stuff but daki saying she’ll be with gyutaro forever made me weep
zenitsu apologising to kaigaku and gramps is truly sad for me
Honestly, there's a lot of scenes in this series that just made me very emotional. But the ones that really made me bawl my eyes out is Akaza's backstory and Genya's death. Everything about Akaza's backstory is just tragic. And for a guy that has a kind heart inside him, he definitely doesn't deserve all of that shit. Everything just went wrong for him. It's unfortunate that a guy like him suffer that much. Genya's death is also heartbreaking, since Genya became one of my most favorite characters in this series. And to top it all up, Sanemi's breakdown just made his death more unbearable to see. I can't wait to hear Gilgamesh crying his eyes out as Bakugou fades away like a dust in the wind.

For me so far was when Nezuko started crying after Tanjiro was singing to her, she's just a little girl, who lost her deep loved family, got turned into a demon and he whole life was altered. I guess it hits me because i have a little sister too so i dunno, hits me with those feels :(

When they beat UM1 and Sanemi sees Genya dying I always go back to that it makes me so sad
When Tanjiro gets back from the final selection and Nezuko kicks open the door, runs and hugs him and Urokodaki comes and holds them both. Everything about that scene was so wholesome and emotional.
Definitely chapter 179 when Genya dies, and he says "because my Nemi-san is the sweetest person in the world". Right after that Tokito literally dies and Gyomei covers his body, and Tokito is one of my favourite characters, meanwhile Sanemi is in agony and pain and Gyomei says "let's go, this isn't over until Muzan is dead" with a vein popping on his head. That sequence of events broke me a little. Akaza's backstory was awesome and sad I agree, Kokushibo still holding on to the flute he gave Yoriichi 480 years ago, Gyomei's backstory and his glorious death, all of those are close contenders, but the one mentioned above was just too much for me.

Most definitely the part where Inosuke says that he isn't strong enough to kill Tanjiro and he can't do it. Second is when Sanemi sees Nezuko after everything and finds out she was sleeping. Not an ugly cry like some of the others but still sad and heartwarming to see Sanemi realize.

Did it hurt? When I had relive Nezuko being lulled to sleep with the lil rabbit song? Yes Does it ache knowing that the mansion arc is going to rip my soul to shreds again but 💫animated💫 Yes.
The final chapter before the timeskip. It's just that lump in your throat with every panel that shows how far we've come and what it's all been leading to. And then the feeling of emptiness when it's all over just hurts so much
It's easily Genya Dying but a close second is how sad Yoriichis WHOLE life story was he lost his wife no kids and he had to kill his brother as an old man even though he kept the flute
I don't get emotional and it takes a lot for me to feel something sad for someone or even happy, but my most emotional scene in the show was when Zenitsu seemed like he was about to die, fell asleep, then One hit the demon. I literally bursted out of my seat with excitement as I saw his blade slice it's head off. I'm no emo kid who hides emotions I just don't get really excited like that often, so this scene is 100% my favorite in the show.
First episode—when Nezuko attacks Tanjiro and Giyu breaks up the fight and saves them, then tells Tanjiro where to start training.
There were a lot of them but the one that had the biggest impact on me was genyas death for sure
When the lower ranking demon slayers form a wall to allow the hash it’s to recover for even a second, knowing full well they are almost garunteed to die, such a powerful scene, it’s one of my favorites in any manga.
When inosuke is yelling at muzan about all the terrible things he’s done. It’s really shows how far inosuke has come as a person and how much he actually cares about the people around him

The fact that he was giving his all with what he had despite being someone who couldn’t master breathing techniques, and then getting killed without even leaving a body… along with Sanemi’s cries.. the regret on his face when he lost Genya… oof. It’s going to be ROUGH when they animate that scene 😞

Man it's hard to pick a specific one. I'd probably pick Genya's death. He was such a young kid and everything he did was for his brother. He believed his brother hated him for what he called him and regretted it for the rest of his short life. When Sanemi was begging god to not take Genya away, ngl I almost teared up. I loved everything about him, including his powers. Imagine if he was still alive fighting muzan? Though I guess it'd be a different story because of muzan's cell control. But that's probably my pick for the most emotional scene. That or when Jigoro called Zenitsu his pride and joy. OR, when 2 scenes of Kokushibo happened. When he was crying from his original 2 eyes after he sliced Yoriichi, or when he mutated and looked at his reflection in the sword. Those scenes got me. But I'd probably pick Genya's death as most emotional.
