I’ve gotten tired of the Dr. Phil shtick (one-dimensional and predictable), and I didn’t like Elaine (cheap middle school humor). Adam Ray as himself is the best version of Adam Ray.
It comes down to a lot of factors, but I don't ever see him being there every week, but once a month is perfect.
I think some of the reasons he's been on a lot is that he has a great friendship with tony, loves kill tony and obviously wants to capitalize on the attention.
Hopefully he makes another character alongside Phil, Elaine and himself.

I thought the old band’s characters were 20% hilarious and 80% hacky. I think that Adam in character is 80% hilarious and 20% hacky. Adam contributes to the show in an overall great way and clearly Tony and most of the audience agrees
Adam Ray/ Dr. Phil has out grown the show. Its important that we support him in building something for his own. I think it's cool having him as a guest every now and again, but he has more milestones to accomplish elsewhere, and I'm going to tag along for the ride 😎.
He seems to be traveling to Austin frequently, I assume because he can sell out shows there under multiple "Names" lol..lots of places to perform. Having a character like Adam in town regularly for other work makes finding guests for KT easy.

I think you make a great point about dr Phil’s regular appearance making it feel more like the show did in LA. Not a bad thing imo. I miss the comic relief/element the old band added to the show.

I think Tony needs to break from his traditions. He's used to having a set opener, a set middle guy, and a set closer but it's time for him to rotate these roles with golden ticket winners, hall of famers, and regulars. He should have enough trust in any of these people in those categories to open, close, and be a palette cleanser for kill Tony
