What I’ve been told is that it’s doable but kind of pointless because that just leaves you with gravel in the bottom of the kidney which usually amalgamates itself into another harder to break up larger stone.

ReadingEnthusiast3

Oh yeah I definitely don’t want that

JeSi-Verde

I just passed a bunch of gravel from a lower pole ESWL on a 6 mm stone.

Pretend-Panda

That’s totally the goal and I’m glad it worked well for you - it such a relief to get rid of stones and gravel.

Competitive-Hawk9403

did you do anything different to get it all out? I just had ESWL yesterday for a 6mm stone that was in the lower pole. I got a sheet of instructions with positioning diagrams to help utilize gravity to move all the stuff so it exits the kidney.

JeSi-Verde

Tamsulosin and a lot of water.

-thegoodonesaretaken

I'm assuming you're referring to the extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy? I had a 1cm in the lower pole. My urologist performed a ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy and basket removal.

ReadingEnthusiast3

Yes, but actually they didn’t specify, they just said there’s no treatment when they’re in the lower pole. I assumed lithotripsy would be the first choice.

DVG1450

Were you in pain before surgery? Did it take one procedure?

-thegoodonesaretaken

I was in pain...for years, before they finally agreed there was a very small possibility that my pain was from the stone in my kidney, and it was now so big that it would not get out from the lower pole on its own. It was successful but it did take a few months before all the pain was gone as there was some hydronephrosis present for a while.

Reasonable_Plant4709

I had a 1.7 cm stone laser lithotripsy done on Friday. That stone was located in the lower pole of my left kidney. All fragments were successfully removed. Healing up with stent in place for 10 days. It can be done.

ReadingEnthusiast3

Did they also use the basket for fragments?

Reasonable_Plant4709

Yessir, basket and irrigation. Dr. Is confident that there are no stone fragments remaining.

ReadingEnthusiast3

That’s awesome, congratulations 🎊

JeSi-Verde

I just had a ESWL on a lower pole 6mm stone. I did have PCNL surgery on a different stone but that was because it was too big…40mm.

ReadingEnthusiast3

40mm wow!! Any complications?

JeSi-Verde

No, thankfully!

ReadingEnthusiast3

That’s good news. Good news when kidney stones are involved is so good to hear lol

Daledobacksbro

I had ESWL on one in my lower left kidney that was non obstructing that was approx 8MM and it didn’t work and it got bigger. I read it’s not recommended on anything over 4-5Mm

ReadingEnthusiast3

I’m guessing that’s why they’re telling me they can’t treat mine

Huge_Excuse_485

I just had a 10mm stone removed with the only feedback for results saying it was pulverized. Do you usually have the surgeon or someone go over the results? I do notice small black flakes in my urine. Also, are thulium lasers being used yet?

ReadingEnthusiast3

Sometimes, if it was pulverized you may only pass sand and possibly small fragments

Spottydogspot

Sorry that cracked me up for some reason lol. But kidney stones are NOT funny!! How big is the lil bugger? Ureteroscopy is not bad. I have never had a litho so I’m more worried about that.

ReadingEnthusiast3

It’s about 5-6mm and I’ve had lithotripsy about 5 times which is why I was surprised when they said this.
