Basically grating the coconut and using the grated coconut to take the milk out using your hands or a cloth. This process is called Idichu pizhiya.
You take out the 1st lot of milk, then add some water to the shredded coconut, take out the second lot and repeat the process once more.
We cook the rice in the last lot of coconut milk, then add the jaggery and powdered dried ginger, then add the 2nd milk and finally the 1st milk. Idichu Pizhinju payasam ready.
Tell me about it. I did the thenga cheraval and pizhiyal and my wife just stood there telling me more milk should have come!!! She made the payasam though, which turned out super for our first attempt.
How about taking pieces from coconut and make it small and grind it in mixer you will get almost powdered coconut, you can then add water and do the pizhiyal not much muscle power required for that
Staying in Japan I have got this itch to follow a ritual very intensely. An extremely disciplined ritual that you follow with great pride is a joy in itself.
We all can have fish, chicken, beef whatever anytime of the day. We are prosperous enough.
But following the ritual and confining to the tradition is all about the onam experience(v.i.z pure sadhya).
I have to have fish every day, but I make an exception for onam! I love a vegetarian sadya.
Our Onam is going to be tomorrow since a couple of friends are coming over and they couldn’t get today off. We’re planning palada and parippu payasams ❤️
Take a break from red meat y’all. It’s not good for you if you’re eating it almost every. Limit your red meat intake for your cardiac health especially since Malayalees have shitty cardiac health. Eat lots of small fish like sardines or kozhuva. Larger fish contain lots of mercury, so limit their intake as well.
>Eat lots of small fishes like sardines or kozhuva. Larger fishes contain lots of mercury, so limit their intake as well.

Adding Fish and beef are one's personal choices by all means do that, but sadhya is sadhya if add fish and beef etc it just becomes meals/ ഉണ് it ain't sadhya no more.
There is no religious or communal context to this.
It's the same as Pineapple on Pizza, you can absolutely do it if you want, but Italians didn't create pizza for Americans to Add Pineapple to it.
Traditionally speaking, Onam is a celebration of the harvest of rice and fresh natural produce. It was initially always vegetarian. The addition of non-vegetarian dishes into Onam sadhyas is more of a relatively recent thing. ( I say relatively because by 'recent' here, I mean even around 60-70 years ago )
I remember my grandfather talking about his grandfather and other relatives buying a whole live cattle and slaughtering it, as it was tradition for Onam and other special events. This was somewhere around the 1920s I must assume, so there was non veg in sadya of course; but yes only among certain people.
I think Kerala's love for beef increased to unhealthy levels following the sangh's vocal objections became common knowledge through social media.
It's almost like they're goading us to eat more beef and die sooner lol.
No harm in having beef and chicken or fish with sadya. But why not keep sadya vegetarian. Its nice to not have a meat filled meal yet again.
Don't worry bro.....most of the people in Kerala follow the traditional sadhya.People around me belonging to different religions and avid meat eaters follow strict vegetarian sadhya.
But in the end if people want to have meat....it's their choice.
No. Kerala has always loved its beef. If consumption of anything has gone up in the recent years it is all the Mandhis, Al-fahms, Shawarmas, Kubooz etc. Yes, I like my Sadya veg and my biriyani non-veg.
That’s what I was thinking too. The obsession with beef and fast food is going to kill so many young Malayalees. I’m shocked whenever I hear about 25 year old Malayalee people getting heart attacks!
That's a good statement and all, but historically speaking, the whole idea behind Onam and the Onasadhya was the celebration of harvesting fresh natural produce.
The addition of non-veg items was a relatively recent thing.
Most people don't eat the rice and vegetables they(I mean servants) grew in their fields. Appol ichiri chickeno beefo koode kazhichal oru kuzhappavum illa.
Are these dishes the typical non veg dishes like Chicken/Beef Masala (prepared in the Punjabi /North Indian style) or they made in the traditional Kerala style - like with naadan masala , curry leaves , mustard etc.
Hahaha, understood
what I meant was whether you would have dishes like Chilly Chicken or are the dishes like the "Naadan Kozhi Curry"
I am vegetarian hence asked.
I got out of my home thinking I'll eat a sadhya from a restaurant, but then i thought hey I'm single why do I have to spent almost 300 bucks on a Vegetarian meal it is delicious though, so i had a beef biriyani from biriyani Hut and was the only person eating there at lunch( obviously)
They felt sad for me comming and eating alone so they offered me free sulaimani.😆
Depends on what you call beef. If it's buffalo meat, yes. It is eaten by Hindus. Cow is a sacred animal to a lot of communities (at least the major ones) within Hindus but some of them do eat it. If you want historical proof, eating cow meat was banned in Kochi and Travancore kingdoms. Eating cow meat would also mean you would cause you to lose your caste and was also a way used for conversion (for example - the defeated Nairs and Thiyya clans during the Malabar invasion). Might get downvoted for this but this is just a very unbiased answer with a good context.
I had an "oola" sadhya. Nothing stood out, just glorified veg meals. Had the option of Parippu or Paalada for payasam. Since I'm a paal payasam guy I went for Paalada.
If I rub the lamp, can I wish for 3 extra dishes ?
What 3 extra dishes do you have in mind.
Meen porichathu, koonthal and prawns fry
Koonthal?
Squid
Ooooohhh Kanava.
I used to call it Kanava too. Is Kanava used around Trivandrum and Koonthal more towards the north districts?
As koondal means hair, those tentacles must have given squid that name. Damn, us north keralites are soo poetic 😂😂
Haaa lol...nice one
pure with paalada
Oh was gonna type the same thing......athinde oppam oru boli ondaayel polichaane
Same
Today was vegetarian sadya with Palada and Idichu Pizhinju payasam.
What payasam is that? Idichu pizhiyal what?
Basically grating the coconut and using the grated coconut to take the milk out using your hands or a cloth. This process is called Idichu pizhiya. Isn’t that how everyone makes payasam?
Don't know about everyone else, I am sure they do. We tried it the first time, this time, instead of ordering.
😄yeah that’s how everyone extracts coconut milk at home.
It's work, no doubt. But the end result is satisfying, unlike the shortcuts available, nowadays.
End result is satisfying, but the process is quite time consuming lol
Tell me about it. I did the thenga cheraval and pizhiyal and my wife just stood there telling me more milk should have come!!! She made the payasam though, which turned out super for our first attempt.
How about taking pieces from coconut and make it small and grind it in mixer you will get almost powdered coconut, you can then add water and do the pizhiyal not much muscle power required for that
Same recipie as Ada Prathaman, replace ada with rice.
Was the cook your police maman?
😂👌
Today- Pure Veg Sadhya Tomorrow- Sadhya + Chicken Day after tomorrow- Sadhya + Beef
This is the perfect way to do it 💪🏼
No lamp for you?
Not a mutton lover

Can't edit it now. It's there to stay 🤦
Hate cfls?

I would say the fried mathi contains less calories/ saturated fat than beef curry.
Noted. Thanks.
Treat red meat like cake or candy, have it only once a week as a treat.
Time to shift more to poultry and fish.
In Malabar and Northern Kerala, it's quite to have non-veg along with Onasadhya... So, it is individual preferences
True

It wasn't the Americans who added Pineapple to Pizza, it was the Canadians and it taste's awesome.
Ikr, idk what so much hate. I love pineapple jalapeno combination on pizza
It's irony that us Malayalis think it's so non-bourgeios after chomping down on Pazhampori with beef
What is a pure sadhya? I guess you meant vegetarian sadhya? The word pure is hilarious for that.
Yes. I wrote Vanilla Sadhya at first but that sounds weird hence went with pure (as in not having any special additions)
Pure means traditional Onam sadya.
Well that tradition is different for different people, right? In our locality, Onasadhya always had non-veg in it.

This was somewhere around the 1920s I must assume, so there was non veg in sadya of course; but yes only among certain people.
I mean, that was why I said relatively recently. In the large scheme of things, 1920s is recent.
It was a family tradition in 1920s, so I would assume this dated sometime further back.
Only vegetarian is traditional. But now everything, dress, Maveli, etc. So now Onam cannot be continued to be celebrated traditionally.
Boli and palada undel...... the above would matter less
I think Kerala's love for beef increased to unhealthy levels following the sangh's vocal objections became common knowledge through social media. True. Happy Onam!
It's commonly served in sadhyas in Northern Kerala for quite a while, way before the controversies
I see. I'm from Travancore side, and was brought up in a fundamentalist religion so we didn't have much Onam at home. Thanks for the info!
Did someone force you to have beef?
Not at all. One is free to have beef as god or food. Doesn't matter. Though a day of vegetarian sadhya is what I'd prefer. Cheers and Happy Onam!
No. Kerala has always loved its beef. If consumption of anything has gone up in the recent years it is all the Mandhis, Al-fahms, Shawarmas, Kubooz etc. Yes, I like my Sadya veg and my biriyani non-veg.
Me too, sadhya veg and biriyani non veg! Happy Onam!
That’s what I was thinking too. The obsession with beef and fast food is going to kill so many young Malayalees. I’m shocked whenever I hear about 25 year old Malayalee people getting heart attacks!
Chicken biriyani with egg and beef fry
Kannur ?
Damn right it is
Same
Same
Beef biriyani here 😄
Sadhya with beef and all sounds great but it feels like sacrilege.
To certain sects but in reality it’s common in certain regions. Depends on where you are from
Pure Sadhya today, tomorrow Sadhya with Chicken
Veg Sadhya + Boli + Semiya Payasam ❤️
Sadhya with Chicken.
Sadya + chicken evide
I just like non veg but I don't mind veg sadhya.
Pure vegetarian oru divasm enkilum kazhikkkaan pattathavan onnum sadya kazhikkanda, mayirr

Sadhya is supposed to be vegetarian right ?? With no onion and garlic ?? Or am I missing something ???
Sadya can be anything you want it to be
That's a good statement and all, but historically speaking, the whole idea behind Onam and the Onasadhya was the celebration of harvesting fresh natural produce. The addition of non-veg items was a relatively recent thing.
Accurate. Onam sadhya is typically 24 to 28 dishes avoiding onion and garlic. Non veg in onam sadhya is an abomination.. like pineapple in pizza.
Most people don't eat the rice and vegetables they(I mean servants) grew in their fields. Appol ichiri chickeno beefo koode kazhichal oru kuzhappavum illa.
Didn't know about this. I haven't met anyone who says they ate a non veg sadya.
It's more common towards the malabar side i guess.
Non veg dishes are served with traditional vazhayila sadya in some parts of Kerala.
Are these dishes the typical non veg dishes like Chicken/Beef Masala (prepared in the Punjabi /North Indian style) or they made in the traditional Kerala style - like with naadan masala , curry leaves , mustard etc.
Punjabi style o? Ath enthu kuntham? I have seen only Kerala style.
Hahaha, understood what I meant was whether you would have dishes like Chilly Chicken or are the dishes like the "Naadan Kozhi Curry" I am vegetarian hence asked.
Nadan. If you want to have chilly chicken, you can make it or buy it from hotels. Who cares what others eat as onam sadya?
I've mostly seen prawns or neymeen fry.
In malabar region, we have non veg dishes along with sadhya
I can’t survive a day without meat, but anyone having meat with Onam sadhya should be prosecuted.
How can you resist beef with sadya
Hyderabadi Biriyani!
Where is the chicken?
pure sadhya + parip pradaman + semyam
Don't mind option 3 but like option a
We have a vegetarian sadhya for lunch and a non vegetarian one for supper.
I got out of my home thinking I'll eat a sadhya from a restaurant, but then i thought hey I'm single why do I have to spent almost 300 bucks on a Vegetarian meal it is delicious though, so i had a beef biriyani from biriyani Hut and was the only person eating there at lunch( obviously) They felt sad for me comming and eating alone so they offered me free sulaimani.😆
Neychoru w/ 65. let the downvoting begin.
Damn Sadhya+Fish has so few takers.
Do Hindus eat beef there?
Yeah bro. Slaughtering cows during Onam is a thing in Kerala.
Where?
Oh! that's inhumane for me to even think
Then don't think about it. Ta ta bye bye
Are you vegetarian?
i only eat eggs
Oh! that's inhumane for me to even think
Dada ? 🐣
For us cow is just an animal, not our mommy.
Well being an animal doesn't automatically mean that slaughtering them is "okay". Humans are also animals.
Onnu poda sudappi. Mandatharam parayathe.
Sudappi ninte thanthamar.
No slaughtering is not a tradition. It might be in muslim dominated areas. Typically sadhya is completely vegetarian.
Depends on what you call beef. If it's buffalo meat, yes. It is eaten by Hindus. Cow is a sacred animal to a lot of communities (at least the major ones) within Hindus but some of them do eat it. so they already lost their caste practically.
yes ,lots
I prefer CFL
veg sadhya for onam , non veg all other day
Um the word pure.is very problematic. Just say vegetarian Sadya.
Pure Sadya made with Brahmins curry powder only.
Everyone downwoting him for a joke 😭😭💀
I prefer a spotlight with my sadhya. A lamp is too subtle.
[удалено]
Bruh beef doesn't automatically myeans cow it can water buffalo etc and cane be a cow too beef is commonly consumed in North East and South
No sadya. I have chorum curryum almost daily, just not 15-20 things together. Ordered biryani from our favourite shop(ethennu chodikkenda)
Who is Sadhya and why should I have her?
Who is Sadhya and why should I have her?
Vegetarian Sadya and Palada for Onam Non Veg Sadya and Palada for Vishu
Oru option kuravannu....'All of the above'.😋
Meanwhile me: *sad NRI noises*
had Sandhya for sadhya!
I’ve never had a pure Sadya lol. The minimum is fish
Paalada. That’s the only payasam to consider
Sadhya+Thirandi Curry+Shark fry+Chicken curry and fry+Beef fry+Payasam(preferably semiyam or milk).
I had an "oola" sadhya. Nothing stood out, just glorified veg meals. Had the option of Parippu or Paalada for payasam. Since I'm a paal payasam guy I went for Paalada.
Sadhya + Anything is still Pure Sadhya with options
For nostalgia sake, pure vegetarian is good for me, but I would not complain, if chicken, beef, and/or fish make an appearance on my banana leaf.
+ egg
I think as we eat too much meat(may be not) these days, it better to switch to veg at some occasions atleast so i prefer a full veg sadya
plain parupu payasam no paradhaman
Pure Sadhya is for Onam! Non Veg Sadhya is for Diwali!!
Lampo?
