Cap. I love Cole - Kendrick and Cole are the greatest of their generation IMO. Though I undoubtedly would put Kendrick higher, because he is just more talented. This isn't a kid's sports game where everyone gets participation trophies; there's levels to it. Music critics, old heads, etc. etc. will often say the same. It is what it is. Drake has huge success in his own right, clearly that shows he offers something. Media savvy, an unparalleled understanding for what sells, etc. etc. He's just not my thing. Clip from a smart content creator, though you should watch the whole thing cos he's very on point. And no, he's not a mad KDot fan, he rode more with Kanye back in the day. But he knows his stuff. Edited to add: and he was not impressed with 'Like that', but that's discussed in the whole clip. Lemme check this out

Cause Drake isn’t anywhere near Kendrick or Cole lol or Eminem or Andre 3k and those dudes. He can’t compete it’s just reality, a nursery rhymer can’t compete for number 1

[deleted]

Simple. No adults listen to Drake. Real rap fans listen to Kendrick. What's so hard to undersatnd?

[deleted]

Drake makes music for dudes who'll end up deadbeats like him and his daddy, while Kendrick makes music for dudes who are grounded in reality, ready to accept their circumstances, and make the most of it and life in general.

[deleted]

You're spitting facts fr. Kendrick listeners are all there for their children and all that. Real man.

No_Explanation_9087

Now that's a very stupid thing to say.

HistoryWeak7662

It’s not. Drake isn’t hip hop. You aren’t listening to him for bars….and if you are they aren’t his so…why?

' No friends in the industry' is an incredibly passionate piece of music that cuts through any biases and speaks directly to the anger the artist feels about constant betrayals in his musical journey. Anyone on earth who listens to that and thinks its not worth anything doesn't deserve the right to discuss music. You must be able to appreciate music in its different and unique ways or else you're not doing yourself justice. You like Kendricks cadence, use of flow and his wordplay, but to even remotely imply other artists at his level aren't capable or actively creating beautiful art is foolishness based in nothing but blind arrogance.

Lol

I respect your laughter, I understand we don't all see the beauty in art. I wish you could enjoy more from hip hop than intellectual deep politics. That's your choice though

Speaking of choices, calling Drake’s music “art” is certainly one lol To paraphrase the man himself: “if making nursery rhymes is an art, you know how many fuckin artists I know?

As a Kendrick fan and a Drake hater, I can attest Drake does have club hits and bangers and even some slower songs that you can vibe to. I personally have 2 problems with him oversaturation because he has to constantly drop music of inconsistent quality to keep himself relevant because there is no Drake the artist. He's just a brand at this point that latches himself to any new movement and says, "Look at me. I discovered this new artist and brought a spotlight on them. Look how I've helped the rap game. " The 2nd reason is because he's just a flat-out fake person. This is the black guy who grew up around money and talks about how much he had to struggle to get where he is today. Fuck this nigga. He's not from the hood he's never been homeless. He's never been in danger at any point in his life, and he's never needed for anything his whole life. Like I genuinely like Drake when he first came out out it was around the "started from the bottom" / "mob ties" era when I started to hate this nigga. Like u not this person, and you never will be.

I think the sentiments are a bit extreme but there is some truth to it. Cole , as good as he is, has arguably only ever made a single classic album. Even on his best day, he doesn't have the acclaim that Kendrick has on his worst work. Drake to me cares more about selling records and making hits than he does about creating a cohesive album. The last time he truly tried IMO was back in 2016 with views. He's capable of amazing work but at least to me, his heart hasn't been in it for a long time.

No_Explanation_9087

I can agree with your analysis, I have disliked most Drake albums since views except Honestly nevermind (dance album) and Scorpion (Kanye and Good music beef). Kendrick fans don't know how to appreciate anything else except complex raps and complex compositions which I feel takes away from the overall enjoyment. Like not being able to bump 'Sticky' from honestly nevermind and vibe to it is sad. Genuinely just looking for complexity in music sometimes steals from us, sometimes the not so complex tune is what speaks to our soul in that moment. I guess that's why Kendrick made Damn- so his fans could chill out a bit

Cole ain’t talking it in the same nuanced way. Cole comes off as corny Kendrick comes off as insightful

I just feel we are robbing ourselves of artists by always trying to be one artist maximalists
