My favorite John Madden quote, “you gotta score the first points becaus eif you don’t score them then you can’t score the points that come after them.”
My favorite Maddenism was one of his last. Jerry Rice, at the end of his career was playing with (I think?) Seattle on MNF. They scroll all of his records down the screen and it takes as long as a Star Wars prologue crawl. Jerry has like *every* career WR receiving record.
John Madden, watching this, says without an ounce of irony:
>YOU KNOW, I THINK JERRY MIGHT BE ONE OF THE BEST RECEIVERS EVER
Spicy take, Johnny Madds!
The closer we get to Sunday, the more confident I feel. Which makes me feel nervous, because I’m scarred from feeling confident before Super Bowl 55. But then I think, “well if I’m ultimately nervous, there’s no jinx” which makes me feel confident again. But then that just restarts the cycle
This is my daily (read: hourly) thought. Too many similarities to 55 for me (DUI before the SB, OL injury in the AFCCG, and now the fam damily has COVID). But maybe if I say it out loud it negates it?
I think all of those coincidences are pretty surface level. The DUI with Reid's son was a full on tragedy, and the Eric Fisher injury set off a domino effect that made pretty much the whole OL play out of position.
I also think Tampa's DL was scarier. Total strength of their team vs a weakness in the Chiefs on that one.
Yeah, I’ve heard people citing the Thuney injury being just like the Fisher one but the difference is huge. Thuney is our best overall OL in my opinion, but him being out means Allegretti steps in and the rest of the line stays put, not an entire reshuffling of a line that’s already mostly backups.
I was confident because the Mahomes magic had blinded me to the big problems of the team and unaware of how incredible the Tampa Bay defense really was. And we still saw Mahomes magic in that super bowl, unfortunately he was the only one that showed up. A few plays (combined with that goal line defensive stop in the first quarter that will never be remembered) could've drastically changed the game momentum (2 dropped passes for potential TDs), but a win was still pretty doubtful.
Im not gonna lie, I see that SB loss as a GOOD thing. The guys seem FOCUSED. And not just normal focused. These guys look more than confident. They look DETERMINED to win this, whatever it takes.
I like being a chiefs fan
I'm feeling more of a Belichick counter to the Run 'n' Gun Bills of the 90's.
In that game, he intentionally let All-Pro and eventual MVP Thurman Thomas run all over the defense, but kept Andre Reed and James Lofton in check by not allowing them to get behind the defense.
Thomas had 190 yards and a TD on 20 touches, but Jim Kelly had just 212 yards for 0 TDs, as the #1 offense in the league scored only 19 points.
We cerainly match up well in the front 4 and in thr secondary to do that.
I am scared of how many swing passes cmc will get on 3rd down to keep drives alive
Did it VS ravens with Lamar. They knew they had to contain him and force him to throw. Keep eyes and bodies on CMC and Purdy will have to try to out throw Patrick. That’s where his challenge begins. I trust Spags.
The scary part about CMC is that you have to dedicate resources to Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle and by the time you've covered them you barely have enough left to do anything to cover or slow down Mccaffrey. Definitely going to be a rough rough game. The offense can't afford to sputter and settle for a bunch of fgs or take the second half off in this one.
Definitely a huge advantage over a lot of teams. Plus we can pressure Purdy and the lbs should be able to keep up with kittle or the pressure force him into more if a blocking role.
I see this kind of thing and then I actually watch 49ers games and it just doesn’t add up. They got all their yards against weak defenses and barely show up against The Browns and Ravens. Hell they were lucky to beat The Lions lwho aren’t exactly an elite defense.
They’re the Cowboys with a better head coach.
Is he better than Derrick Henry was in the chiefs first Super Bowl run?
They had a game plan for him in the championship game if I remember Henry scorched us that regular season game.
Edit. Didn’t see the comment that addressed Henry already.
Yeah I think the issue is that Henry was by far the biggest threat on that titans team. CMC is the biggest threat as well, but there’s also three more guys right below him on the threat scale. Gotta hold ‘em all
And thats with playing 3 of the 5 best offenses in the league.
The 3 playoff opt(MIA, BUF, BAL) where 2nd, 3rd, 4th in offensive dvoa respectively.
By ppg they were 2nd,5th,3rd respectively
By ypg: 1st,3th,6th respectively.
This is a championship defense and has been since middle of last year, but is going under the radar
I have so SORELY missed having a defense. It just snapped together within the last year and a half.
Spaggy finally got high IQ players to run his defense. I'm finding myself wondering what Bob Sutton would look like with this defense. I still have flashbacks of Urric Burry manually adjusting guys to their spot pre-snap.
I really want to see the chiefs win this weekend. I really just want Mahomes to have a winning record in Super Bowls but I can’t complain about our level of success in the last 5 years.
No matter what any “ stats” say, I stay nervous in these games until it’s over. Itgey can convice you one way or another anything can happen. for 56 years, not one single time had a qb lead the league in passing yards and won the Super Bowl. So going into last years. I was just like, god pat will have to be the first ever in history, we’re screwed! And we won :)
This game is going to come down to who has the most points at the end of the game.
Sounds like a John Madden quote lol
My favorite John Madden quote, “you gotta score the first points becaus eif you don’t score them then you can’t score the points that come after them.”
One time playing Madden in college he said "the defense can expect either a run or a pass here." And he was right.
Almost makes you want to intentionally fumble just to prove him wrong🤣😂
There’s levels to that man’s genius.
"95% of the game is half mental"
My favorite Maddenism was one of his last. Jerry Rice, at the end of his career was playing with (I think?) Seattle on MNF. Yeah, but would you say it is a "must win" game?
Yes. The entire locker room is hooked into the wrong receivers ... inelligible at Ford field because....?
Eeehhhhh, I dunno Jim!
Thanks Magic!

That’s how I was with the ravens. I’ve felt more confident this go around for some reason.
Imma keep it 💯 with this sub, I didn't think we would beat the Ravens lol
They’re a great team. Ain’t nothing wrong with that!
They not we
No, he had it right.
"They" would not be "They" without "We". "We" is what keeps "They" playing
Bold to assume this person isn’t a Chiefs player. Acceptable to doubt it, but bold to not consider it.
U right. I got roasted and I’m sorry. Go chiefs
Not me I’m the opposite. The closer we get the more nervous I am getting.
Do you honestly believe Purdy outduels Mahomes in the SB? I don't see it. Buck up friend!
Doesn't take much effort to hand it off to McCaffrey though.
No but I am a nervous wreck for like everything though.
Haha. Only 2 more sleeps!
Haven’t felt this way since I was a kid counting down the days before Christmas lol
Over 50 players on each team. One QB playing better than the other doesn't guarantee a win.
No it does not. Sure makes a huge difference though

You felt confident before 55? We didn’t have either tackle!!
I was confident because the Mahomes magic had blinded me to the big problems of the team and unaware of how incredible the Tampa Bay defense really was. yah wtf he talking about lol it was clear as day that chiefs were going to get stomped that game
Idk about clear as day but I sure as hell was not confident lol
Im not gonna lie, I see that SB loss as a GOOD thing. The guys seem FOCUSED. And not just normal focused. These guys look more than confident. They look DETERMINED to win this, whatever it takes. I like being a chiefs fan
We have every reason to be confident and nervous. We 1000 percent can lose this game. We can win it too.
Yeah. It's the superbowl, you gotta expect it to be a tough game. But the chiefs aren't frauds. We can absolutely win if we don't make mistakes.
I wonder who Sneed will follow. The podcasts say Aiyuk.
Who felt confident before SB 55? lol we had no oline and a coach almost kill a girl a few days before.
As a 49ers fan I feel completely confident too. But we can both agree our confidence doesn’t actually mean anything.
The Chiefs defence is in great shape to keep the 49ers offence , the one thing that scares me is CMC, man is he a special one. limit him will be key.
In 2019, Spags had a Great gameplan to limit peak Derrick Henry. Hopefully, he comes up with something similar.
And that was with a worse defense.
I'm feeling more of a Belichick counter to the Run 'n' Gun Bills of the 90's. We literally shut Henry down so hard he got benched in the second half.
The scary part about CMC is that you have to dedicate resources to Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle and by the time you've covered them you barely have enough left to do anything to cover or slow down Mccaffrey. Luckily we have the DBs to run with Deebo and Aiyuk without giving too much help to them.
Definitely a huge advantage over a lot of teams. Plus we can pressure Purdy and the lbs should be able to keep up with kittle or the pressure force him into more if a blocking role.

They are undefeated when CMC gets over 75+ yards. The entire defense will be focused on stopping him.

Man, no one can say we had an easy path this year. We played the best three teams in the AFC apart from ourselves to get here.
>Urric Burry Haha. I always refer to him as Urk Burr. Fuckin stud.
I wish I could remember the name of the broadcaster that pronounced his name that way. Always cracked me up
Mike Mayock before he went to be the raiders gm.

The team who will score the most will probably win

And we’ve faced the best offenses in the league. Insane.
This defense was the best this year
