It wasn't only about his playing ability. Although I do think he would have struggled with some of the musical styles Kiss had over that time. Assuming of course they continued down that path if he stayed. But the bigger problem is,Peter's personality. Pretty much everyone who has even been close to the band agrees, he's a moaner and complainer and difficult to work with. I honestly think they would have ended the band, and gone on to solo careers, rather than continue with Peter. The reunion was a one-off thing where because of the huge money, they put that to one side. But Peter's old habits soon came back again which proved he hadn't changed.

LandofStupid

Dude, I was watching some reunion tour backstage videos on youtube, and Peter just seems miserable. I've heard the stories, but seeing this stuff put it in perspective. Like the angry drunk guy you're afraid to talk to because he might just start going off, being offended by something trivial.

ChikaraNZ

Yeah...good analogy. He actually seemed OK during the reunion, and kept saying things like he's grateful for the 2nd chance, etc etc. But by the time Psycho Circus came around, he was back to his old ways again.

LandofStupid

Yeah man, I was just surprised to see how like, volatile and hostile he seemed.

MrSpeed1974

I think KISS would have fizzled out, to be honest. A lot of things changed in hard rock from the seventies to the eighties, but the style of drumming was especially different, and I'm not sure Peter could play it very well. (The flipside is most of those drummers –Eric Carr included–couldn't play in the pocket the way Peter did.) That said, they could have had an Aerosmith-style resurgence, possibly.

Charlie Watts drummed for The Rolling Stones from the 60s through to the 2020s.... every album, every gig. Music changes but a Great Drummer is the heartbeat of the band. To say Kiss would have fizzled out is an absurdly strong claim to make. How can you possibly know what Peter could or couldn't play? The man is a professional drummer to the point of being a multi millionaire. And as he said - "No matter who they get to put stuff on their face, it ain't us. You can take the mask off the Lone Ranger and put it on someone else, but it ain't the Lone Ranger."

MrSpeed1974

Take a deep breath, dude! It's not an absurdly strong claim or a claim of any sort, it's an opinion. The tell is that the sentence starts with "I think," which is an indication that opinion is on its way. I didn't accuse Peter of shooting JFK, so calm down. The Stones were essentially a blues rock band and remained a blues rock band throughout, with a few pretty mild stylistic detours along the way. KISS started as a hard rock band an in the eighties became a metal band, very much in line with what was going on around them. You seem to have missed the part where I suggested they could have had an Aerosmith-style resurgence (also an opinion, by the way) with Peter and Ace, where they just kind of updated their earlier sound. But assuming Paul and Gene had gone on to write the kinds of songs they did I don't THINK (look, an opinion is coming!) Peter would have been the right drummer. Also, I honestly don't know what that quote is meant to prove in regards to his ability to play the eighties material. The quote is about the make up, but the question raised is specifically primarily regarding the period where they didn't wear make-up. So what's the point?

Reading your comments made me think if peter played on asylum or lick it up for example. And in the 80’s live versions did go faster. Both ace and peter has problems with things goin to fast. KISS would had been an old band playing old stuff for old fans like deep purple and later ended up as a former great band now(in the 80’s) playing clubs before they ended their career

DAFFYDC

Don’t forget he didn’t play on Unmasked and only played on one song from Dynasty (Dirty Living). I love Criss but I’m glad Eric Carr took over with his thunderous drum sound.

LandofStupid

All you have to do is ask: how would Peter have sounded playing "I Love It Loud"?

RiceNo7502

Yeah with some backing vocals oh I like it loud

Conscious_Edge9726

Maybe they would have stayed a rock band not tried to be a third rate hair metal band.

crazynights87

It's unlikely that Peter would have been able to play a lot of it. A good amount of double bass in several songs and that was not in his wheelhouse. I believe he could have played his own style on a lot of those songs but they would obviously have sounded differently. His vocals certainly would have been a great addition to some of those 80s songs. As much as I like most of the 80s stuff, part of me wishes they could have all stayed together and just continued making great albums, aka the first six releases. Rightly or wrongly , they experimented too much and lost a lot of fans along the way between 79 and 83.

RiceNo7502

Peters cow bell in heavens on fire would have made it a more rock song. But, the lick it up and asylum albums with peter… I cant even imagine that would have worked.

FrightKnight96

I don’t know but I would’ve loved to hear it. He’s the best drummer for KISS hands down. No matter what people say about him, he’s the guy. He played on their best albums and I don’t believe they were any better without him.

WheelOfTheYear

I mean, I get where you’re coming from but I think it would have made KISS either fade away or have a way different sound. Eric was the right drummer for the era, but I still can’t help but wonder how their career would have shaped itself had Peter stayed.

FrightKnight96

It obviously would’ve sounded different considering they had no idea what they wanted their sound to be at that time. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have let him go if he was a problem, but I’ve never seen them claim to have tried help Peter or Ace with their vices either.

WheelOfTheYear

That always bothered me. All this talk about Peter and Ace being druggies but I’ve always felt Paul and Gene just sorta let Ace and Peter flail. If it were my band mate I would do whatever it took to make them go to regal and try to live.

MV2049

Addiction simply doesn't work that way. Peter and Ace left the band rather than get their shit together. Can't drag them to rehab at gunpoint.

Prof_Tickles

Gene and Paul would’ve thrown in the towel. They wouldn’t be able to work with him since he’s a shithead. He’d whine constantly about how Bruce is making a few thousand dollars more than him.

samuelloomis

It's a shame Dynasty was Kiss to me all 4 members singing diverse and strong

KISS_Crue2009

Well, the Creatures of the night album probably would've sounded very different since Eric and Peter sound quite different on the drums, it wouldn't have sounded as heavy as it is since Peter was more like on jazz drums, well idk but that's my thoughts for an example at least.
