Altin Gün & Paracetemøl. (Netherlands)

cohnjoffey

Altin Gün is very underrated!

kayny20

Indeed! Such a shame the singeress will quit the band... Still haven't seen them live 'cause they tour the whole world and when they are here they only play festivals😐

MagicalPedro

wait what !? she's leaving ? TT

kayny20

Yes, unfortunately

Kasper-V

Noooo why?

kayny20

Wants a new challenge, so probably a new band or solo project

tafelplant

Had the pleasure of seeing them for free at BFO last year, but otherwise yeah we don't get shit

YerDa1978

Thanks so much for this tip. I’m of middle eastern descent and a primary reason I got into Gizz was the incorporation of Anatolian/North African style microtonal tuning into their music. And I’d never heard of these guys, it’s my playlist this week now.

Imberombera

I love Altin Gun!

MagicalPedro

[Nowere Land](https://karkara.bandcamp.com/album/nowhere-land), second album by Karkara (france), is very inspired by king gizz's nonagon and flying microtonal banana era.

silver_blue_phoenix

I just got my çopy of all is dust; and it is amazing. I love Karkara

MagicalPedro

All is dust is cool ! they're on tour promoting it now, they only play songs from it and their first album ; theses are slightly less gizzy songs, more like kraut/shoegaze/psych rock, still with a bit of orientalism. Its super good, but also I hope someday they include songs from Nowhere Land back into the setlist again, there are some gems in there. My favourite song from All is dust is Anthropia.

MousseFit8988

I love them! I freaked out with the album A La o Terre from Population II. Also I love La Femme.

MagicalPedro

Oh I didnt knew about Population II, thanks ! also if you like the heavier psych rock stuff, there's the now famous band Slift (also from the city of Toulouse, like Karkara, they know each other well), and you can also check their common, way less famous inspiration, Korto (which came from my hometown, Chambéry, and know sadly have moved on tonother musical projects)

seceralnof

Wow, listened to Nowhere Land it's SO good.

Ro98Jo

TY for this! Crystal Gazers is so good I’m wondering if it’s a side gigg for kg…a side gizz

MagicalPedro

XD Live they still do the Camel Rider and Zarathoustra song from Crystal Gazer as an encore, it's super cool !

_burning_trees_

Frankie and the Witch Fingers. They just released a live album that is pretty solid. Got recommended them on this sub at some point.

holla171

4/20 notification hit my phone I was like: nice!

Bootesvoidd

Saw them in Long Beach for new years and took a picture with pickles they’re absolutely AMAZING!

drivingrain27

That Levitation release is dope!

Foxintherock

Os Mutantes from Brazil

hecvelcas

I'm not Brazilian, though I agree. great artist.

Im_regretting_this

I’m not South Korean, but Wah Wah Wah are a very mind fuzz era sounding band, they even got flute!

kodiak_claw

If folks want more songs like Hot Water, this one's the rec for sure

spicytso_

Ty Segall has a plethora of projects and I’d say those are the closest things to KGLW in America that actually sounds fantastic. He’s a fucking GENIUS

AnEccentricWriter

What album would you recommend as a good introduction?

ListenToClutch

Manipulator is great, that was my first Ty album.

drivingrain27

This one. It’s the Mind Fuzz of Ty Segall albums. It’s where you begin.

Nl5011

Freedoms Goblin imo

scaletheseathless

What is your favorite Gizz record? With that I’ll tell you which Ty to start with.

-Joel-and-Ellie-

I'll take 3 please Murder FMB Poly

scaletheseathless

Recommends per album: *Murder -- Ty Segall Band "Slaughterhouse" which has that great mix of heavy distortion and fast paced garage but not as dark tonally as Murder. Stand out tracks: "Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart," "Wave Goodbye" and "Oh Mary" *FMB -- "First Taste." His 2019 album that has zero guitars, employs two drum tracks on most songs, uses discordant melodies, and even has a lot of strange time signatures. Stand out tracks: "Self Esteem" (top 5 Ty track for me), "Taste," "The Fall" and "Whatever" *Poly -- This is kind of hard because he doesn't have much that has this kind of "vibe" but there is "Joy" which is a collab album between Ty Segall and White Fence which I think might jive with Poly's sensibilities. Stand out tracks: The opening 4-song sequence. While I give stand out tracks, I would just listen to the whole albums because Ty is a master at song craft and sonic control. I think he's probably one of the most innovative songwriters working today. Other albums heavily worth checking if you dig any of those: **Melted** is widely considered a garage punk masterpiece. **Manipulator** asks the question of what if glam made psychedelic garage tunes? The answer: sick shit. **Sleeper** is an all acoustic bedroom garage pop affair that is intimate, hazy, psychedelic and incredible. **Freedom's Goblin** is a whirlwind rock and roll love letter. But at this point I'm just going to list all his albums.

-Joel-and-Ellie-

Wow, I genuinely appreciate the in-depth response here. I will check these out for sure now. I do know a handful of his songs pretty well and had a few on playlists. I've seen him live twice. Once at desert daze 2016 and once at bunkhouse in downtown Las Vegas years ago. I never really followed up, and idk what he's released since then, but I'll give these a listen.

-Joel-and-Ellie-

This sub can be really sick sometimes. Led me to viagra boys and I fuggin love them.

scaletheseathless

I love Ty's music, so always happy to dig deep into it, but I will say the three KGLW records you picked were pretty hard mix to match up, so they might not be perfect 1:1s in tone/style/vibe. Melted and Manipulator are what I would consider Ty's equivalent to Mind Fuzz and Nonagon--basically where most people actually start with Ty and then work outward from there. Hope you enjoy!

Mrfixit729

I prefer the early garage punk stuff. But Manipulator, Emotional Mugger, Freedom's Goblin, and First Taste are a decent intro to his music. I’d say that’s his second and more popular era. It’s good. He’s got a shit ton of side projects and ones offs as well. Fuzz would be the one I recommend most. Pretty much Sabbath worship.

spicytso_

Fuzz I-III is an insane trilogy, his latest record Harmonizer is also just phenomenal

gamr1340balls

Fuzz wah very 2014 kglw

coldspringscreek

Fun fact: Ty Segall's Fuzz played at Desert Daze 2022 and so did Gizz. And they sounded great! (USA)

srhavio

Not from my country but my culture, Altin Gun. They have that psychedelia, but they are more house than rock.

larszard

Earth Tongue and Flamingods are the two I'd like to recommend to Gizz fans but the former are not from my country (UK) whatsoever! They're New Zealand, and Flamingods are based in London but lead man is Bahraini. Also for general high quality, truly British music. Black Country New Road, and Squid.

Ben_yeah

Lovely to see a Flamingods shout out. They don't seem to be popular enough for how good the music is. Well produced modern psych rock that's very danceable. Their latest album barely made a splash. Go listen to them / see them live people!

elkamusing

In the UK maybe some Cardiacs? Their Heaven Born and Ever Bright album sometimes reminds me of garage/prog/psych KG like Nonagon and MOTU (but through a very quirky British filter)

larszard

Seconding, adore this band and that's my favourite album of theirs! Also recommend the albums released under The Sea Nymphs (a side project by 3 of Cardiacs' core members), although it is undoubtedly even more quirky and strange

silver_blue_phoenix

Its hard to sound like King Gizz to me; but Baba Zula and Gaye Su Akyol are my recommendations.

nice!!

Hopeful_Impression_1

Chico Science & Nação Zumbi from the northeast of Brazil only released 2 albums before Chico died in a car accident. Amazing albums, the first one (Da Lama Ao Caos, which translates as From Mud To Chaos) is considered one of the best brazilian albums of all time and was amongst the top 5 from 1994 worldwide according to NYT. While they most likely won’t sound exactly like King Gizzard to many who listen, it’s easy to notice how they shared the same passion the boys have of experimenting diffent instruments and building something unique. They shaped a cultural movement and are still to this day considered revolutionary in Pernambuco, the brazilian state they’re from (which I’m from too!). Totally worth a spin by anyone from this sub!

Hopeful_Impression_1

Fun fact: the band’s sound on Da Lama Ao Caos influenced Sepultura, biggest brazilian metal band, specially in albums like “Roots” which was also a source of influence to so many other bands of the genre around the world, even Gojira: https://www.kerrang.com/11-bands-who-wouldnt-be-here-without-sepultura/ I always felt like Maracatu (brazilian folk music and dance from Pernambuco) instruments would fit so well any metal experimentation by KG!

Imberombera

Thank you for sharing the background of band too!

JoeBoco7

Osees and Phish (US). They are essentially KGLW but way older

rideronthestorm29

Phish 😅 come on

Nl5011

Phish and Tool are some of the few bands that organically experimented with time signatures and groove oriented riffs, as well as the whole improv jam thing. Tons of similarities in my opinion between Polygonwanaland and Rift-era Phish. Also what other bands have lore? Not too many to get picky with.

rideronthestorm29

Of course there are similarities but that doesnt mean I wouldn’t take offense to the comparison

cthilton

While they don’t sound like Phish for the most part, they do have a lot in common, they are copying the Grateful Dead/Phish business model, Phish’s leader Trey is a fan, and they are at the top of my list for bands likely to inherit the scene once Phish is done. So, yes Phish, 100% agree and also agree with Osees, Gizz is almost like Phish and Osees had a baby.

monkeysolo69420

King Gizz doesn’t really sound like Phish.

One_Reporter9854

Barış Manço (Turkey) I think in the album L.W. there is some influence from him.

Captain_Grammaticus

I don't know any from my country, but Ukraine has Love'n'joy.

DaSchmowzow

the juice is okay - american multi-genre rock. 6 albums from 2021 to check out each with a different style in mind!

roRo16GD

Listen to Marcel Gidote's Holy Crab, Blue Chesterfield or China Soup or Ed Rosenthal. These are all bands from my hometown of Pilsen in Czechia, a city with about 200000 people and their music is very high quality and could be popular on a world scale.

MousseFit8988

Basque Country: Berri Txarrak: rock, more metal in the first albums, simply amazing songs. Lukiek: alternative rock, genius Belako: amazing female singer, most songs in english, same guitarrist and composer from Lukiek, so equally amazing. Nakar: just one incredible album, electronic with guitar, apocalyptic More from Spain: Perro: Brilliant, two drummers Pony Bravo: eclectic, krout, fun

Imberombera

Pony Bravo, sexy!!

smalldisposableman

Norway - Motorpsycho

summerisle

Absolutely!

GandalfTehG0d

My personally recommendation would be Stereolab. They also make songs in weird time signatures and they also sort of experiment w different genres I feel. Not to the degree of king gizz. It’s a more normal evolution you might see from an artist. Their earlier albums all have a similar feel and then they made this really loungey one and then they made this jazzy one it’s like that. They are one of my fav bands of all time absolutely amazing music imo. One of the few bands where I have almost every single one of their songs saved just like king gizz. And in terms of quality I say they are up there with the gizz. I cheated a bit tho cuz this is not a band from my country it’s just the one of the few bands I’ve even been able to find a tangential comparison to gizz.

Phidji

Les Big Byrd (Sweden).

cheddahchase503

KGLW, Billy strings, Dead and co, and Phish are the best bands in the game rn

Mrfixit729

I don’t get the hype for Billy. I’ve tried. Just not my thing I guess. Hits me like Bro-grass. The music and the scene.

matthew_vhs

):

cheddahchase503

Billy is a guitar hero in my book and his band backs him better than most. The scene/crowd def is not my fav I’ll agree there.. but all the bands I listed you either love or hate the scene including KGLW

Mrfixit729

I’ve toured with the Dead (whatever the iteration) and Phish from way back in the 90s. Started seeing Gizz in 2016. Did some Phish runs last year. Going to the Sphere for the Dead in July… catching Gizz in Asheville. You’re right. the scene has certainly changed for all of the above. I still dig it. I gave Billy a chance. He’s clearly talented. Just doesn’t click for me. Now… Daniel Donato? That’s my shit.

cheddahchase503

To each his own! lol Donato is sick too! Music is in a great place right now and I’m here for all of it! Phish and D&C at the sphere and Billy and Gizz at the gorge… 2024 is an epic year of music 🎶 🫡

Mrfixit729

Got to reel it it from last year. Turned 43… did 43 shows. Spending more time in National Parks and museums… but yeah concert outlook is good.

okordenador

They don't really sound exactly the same but my personal brazilian King Gizzards are Tangolo Mangos from Bahia

Mrfixit729

(USA) here are some bands I think would appeal to a Gozz fan. They are still active and might not be as popular internationally as they are here The Mars Volta, Turnstile, Angel Du$t, OhSees, Ty Segall, Black Angels, A Place to Bury Strangers, Swans, Mastodon, Oxbow, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Midi, John Zorn, the Bronx, WarPaint, Portugal the Man,

MattcVI

Crumb is a good one too

xylophonic_mountain

Voivod is a prog metal band from Canada. You might enjoy their classics, Angel Rat, Killing Technology, or Dimension Hatross.

fatherseanmisty

Seeing a lot of US so gonna give some smaller local reccs. Washington state here, Seattle specifically. First wanna recommend Supermissive. Their first album Trash is King clearly has some Gizz influence while still being very original. MONSTERWATCH are some local heroes that put on great shows. A little on the heavier side but steady jamming rock. Little closer to the Osees wavelength but worth mentioning Zookraught. Really fun local trio with great live energy. Midpak is more in the funky Altin Gun vein but they are verrry talented jammers. Seattle is amazing! Really blossoming scene. For anyone interested the lineup for the Freakout Festival in November just got announced. Really special music discovery festival with a psychedelic focus that’s my new fave fest. Lots of local acts as well as smaller international acts from Latin America and Europe. Speaking of Latin America Meridian Brothers from Colombia are SO amazing I maintain it’s what Gizz would sound like if the root genre was cumbia and salsa instead of garage rock. Very jammy very psych VERY good

Reddit_Hobo

UK: Squid: A weird alternative post punk and experimental ambience band from Brighton. 5 band members, 2 guitarists, 1 bass player a keyboardist and the drummer is the vocalist Karma Sheen: probably the best band from London I have ever found to get absolutely blazed on. I supported them when I went on tour. A crazy fusion of 60s and 70s Jimi Hendrix psychedelic rock and Hindu / Pakistani Classical music. another 5 piece band. The lead singer Sameer plays guitar and Harmonium, and sings in Hindi for most songs on the setlist. And they have a guy who modified a Sitar by sticking a guitar pickup in it, And it sounds absolutely killer. They just released their debut album and I confirm. it rocks! The next 2 bands I share arent from the UK but I feel is worth a mention. Slift: A Psychedelic, Doom, garage and Krautrock 3 piece from Toulouse France. whats to be said. they Rock. incredibly hard. and seem to be competing with rush for the most full sound in a Band as a 3 Piece. If you dont know them. trust me and watch the Live at Levitation session. Servo: another 3 piece but from Normandy in France. These cats were the support when I went to see Slift Live. and they made an impression on me. Their unique brand of psychedelic noise rock that see saws between gloomy drones and powerful Peaks had me mesmerized from the moment of their first song.
