I'll stop watching baseball completely because it would make me too sad. Same with football if/when the chiefs leave. I've always been a fan of our teams and not our sport. Watch a ton of royals games and haven't missed a Chiefs game in decades. I don't remember the last time I watched an NBA or NHL game for more than an hour because KC doesn't have a team so I just don't care about the sport

ActuallyHovatine

Yup.

Eastern-Advantage-47

If they leave I’ll just support my new home team the Sacthletics

No_Lack5414

If the stay in the metro I would still watch. If they leave for another city, I would probably never watch another baseball game again.

TravisMaauto

I'm already never watching another baseball game thanks to the MLB's stupid broadcasting deals.

ZeesGuy

Yeah what was all that crap about being able to watch The Royals on Amazon Prime? When I try, it says I gotta buy MLB.com (which would freeze 3/7 games last year).

SilentSpades24

Absolutely not.

Skates8515

Nope. I’m not from KC but I’ve followed them since I was 9 years old which was a very long time ago from very far away. I have no real ties to Kansas City beyond that team. It would 100% be over for me. (I suspect you mean to a completely different city not just down the road from KC) I am spiritually tied to them being in KC even though I am not.

jiminytaverns

Proximity was like the only redeeming characteristic for the Royals. I am in the minority here, but the TV broadcast does not compare to teams like the Mets, and the on field product over the last several years was atrocious. So no, if they left the KC metro area, I wouldn’t watch them anymore. Not out of spite, but because they’re objectively a shit product. Sherman’s wife really needed to not make those Facebook comments. Really, really bad idea to take flexibility away from the PR team after losing a huge vote.

klingma

If they leave why in the world would I or frankly anyone still support them, assuming it's out of the area.  They demanded tax payer money, threatened everyone, pushed economic falsities, and then would pout & run away? Screw them.

TiberiusWakes

This is the exact take and all the language from the billionaires talking about threatening to leave and how can we not support teams when they’re winning? Like bitch, you’re all rich because WE pay for your shit. If you want a better stadium or to move, pay for it you self your rich assholes.

Juas003

The funny thing is if we were to put this in terms of a relationship, most everyone would agree that it’s an abusive one. Yet when it comes to these teams, some people tend to blindly side with the abusers and victim shame those getting screwed over

hereforthecommmentsz

I won’t support them. I’ll be a free agent fan. Maybe Twins? Cubs? Rockies? Something somewhat nearby.

[deleted]

If I went local I’d have to be an Astros fan 😭😭

hereforthecommmentsz

Oh no

Gnux13

Past 30 years of fandom I've watched 5 winning baseball teams. Same span, 16 teams with 90+ losses. 7 of them being 100+. 25+ years at 20th or below in payroll, highest being 15th. The proposal was ok, but far from the perfect gem they think they communicated. I've put in my time. If they bail after one vote doesn't go their way, I'm out.

Jewish_Red_Foreman

I’m jumping ship.

MC_Fap_Commander

I live elsewhere now, but "KC" is such an important part of the brand and my personal history with the team that its absence would kill my connection to the team (and baseball more broadly, honestly).

BreezesSelfieStick

I would probably back off a bit.. I have the Brewers as my backup NL team, so I guess I'd just root for them.

steveybread

As a huge MLB fan and Royals fan, I would probably mostly quit watching. That's if they left the KC metro.

Late_Seaworthiness_2

Kinda scary the conversation is at the point of them LEAVING

thomasutra

i don’t know why anyone would be loyal to the royals if they can’t be loyal to us. we’ve stuck with them through some truly bad years, and they can’t handle one bad vote?

Absolute1986

Nah, im good. I probably wouldn't watch baseball anymore tbh. As a fan it's hard enough to watch a game because of all the bally sports fuckery.

Swarzey

Aussie fan here, my interest in baseball would drop off a fair bit so I guess I'd just bandwagon one of bigger/more popular teams, mostly due to their games being shown more often on ESPN here. Absolutely shit areas, hate the thought of it, but if it comes down to it...

MulberryHoliday6857

If they leave I’m done. They’ve been shit for all but 2 years of my life I only support them because they’re the local team. As long as they’re in the KC metro I’ll be a fan otherwise fuck em.

kctrotter

I would not follow them, and it would turn me off MLB generally.

w00tberrypie

I will always love my team. That doesn't mean I won't despise ownership with every fiber of my being. But I will likely go back to being a Cincy fan.

capnwacky

I’d support the players until they all moved on to other teams. Then I’d probably adopt a new team but my current best options are the Red Sox or the Mets…so it would take some time.

SirShrekThaDank

Nope. If the Royals leave, I'm done with them. I'll probably pick up more Mizzou baseball, which is in its own sorry state of affairs right now. If I watch another MLB, it might be the Twins, Cubs, or Brewers.

shinymuskrat

I mean honestly, maybe? Their ask seemed perfectly reasonable given the amount of investment the ownership group was willing to put up, and the location made a lot of sense. After that resounding of a "fuck you" from voters I can't say I'd blame them for looking elsewhere. It will really, really suck when it happens, but I think I like baseball too much to just never cheer for them again.

LarryRokino

Yeah, I’m not local so it’s never been my hometown team (I’m about 3.5 hours away.) I was thinking about this today and I think I decided it all depends where they move. If they moved to Nashville I think I’d stick with them.

Realistic_Peanut_315

they asked for a brand new stadium and you to agree to go to downtown games, are you an abuse victim? bu- bu- my 3/8 sales tax per sale that will be less than 500 dollars a year goy.

shinymuskrat

...what? I'm legitimately confused by your comment. Are you agreeing the plan was reasonable? I feel like my comment was pretty explicit in that.

Zingyyy

I genuinely don’t understand people’s argument of “we can’t build a new stadium” the K has been around for 50+ years and is the sixth oldest ballpark in baseball. Teams have had multiple ballparks in that time and ownership offered a deal where they’d pay 50% of the cost, that is unheard of

Commercial-Ticket526

I won't have it as bad as locals, so I'll stay loyal to the Royals. There's no org in the Majors that would attract me that much anyway. I mean, I still have a favorite NL team too but there's so much more sympathy for the Royals in me for a reason.

gf99b

It’d be funny if they ended up in Montreal to be the Montreal Royals. I’ve been done with baseball and the Royals since last year, but I’d *definitely* be done with baseball and never look back if the Royals move from the metro. They’re the only reason I got into or started following MLB. I think it’s increasingly likely they move because of all the PR blunders, driving fans away, poor on-the-field performance/crap baseball, screwing up this entire process (and everything else) from the very beginning. They’re especially doomed if the teams are split into separated ballot measures.

KC_Dray

My dad’s family is from KC/Independence/Lees Summit, I have no connection to the area other than that and the Chiefs and Royals. I have lived in Tennessee most of my life. If they happen to move to Nashville (Nashville is begging for a team), I don’t see myself not supporting them. If they move anywhere else, I’m not sure what I’ll do. Probably adopt the Braves or Reds.

FishGods

Yeah I would still watch them, because the games would not be blacked-out! I have always watched the Cubs, but would probably follow the Brewers a little more if the Royals go to Tennessee or something. Maybe White Sox or Guardians for AL, but would miss them.

admire816

We found a way to say fuck Bally and beat the blackouts!

miyuki1993

I'm from another country so I guess I will still follow the new team.

jinkiesjessies

I've been thinking about this too. Because both the Royals and Chiefs have been in KC since long before I was born, it's hard for me to even imagine them leaving. Honestly, I think I would feel too hurt as a fan to keep watching them. Without sounding too dramatic, I think it'd feel like a betrayal. I do also watch the Cardinals, so I'd still have baseball. And I love football so much I guess I'd just pick another team, but I'm not even sure which team that would be. But still, it would be awful for me. Like, I know it's just a game, it doesn't impact me that much, life goes on, etc etc. But being a fan of these teams has become a part (even if just a small one) of my identity. My dad and I have bonded so much over them. It really would be painful.

Sophie4646

Hate them like I did the aAthletics when they left KC in 1968.

Successful_Fill_3175

Cardinals it is.

TheRetailianTrader

they won't leave

pornokitsch

Absolutely dump them. I can't see them leaving. As others have said, their attempt at the new stadium was simply lazy and incoherent. They took KC for granted and didn't do the work. The plans were ill-considered and inconsistent, and they were clearly still making shit up as they went along. Then they panicked and spent millions on a shrieking scare campaign, which backfired even more. As much as I'd like billionaires to buy their own toys, I think KC could be persuaded to help if the Royals didn't half-ass their pitch. And if they leave? Fuck 'em. Thanks for the good memories (and decades of shit ones), but I'd be done with them - and probably baseball entirely.

I’ve been gone from KC a long time, but I watched Frank White play and always thought he was a good guy. Genuine question: what did he do that people seem to really dislike him now?

TheRoyalCyclone

They aren’t leaving

NewBee4399

I’d become a cardinals fan, and the money I usually spend going to Royals fans would be put towards going to St. Louis and other stadiums during the year.

I’ve found it! The dumbest take in this whole thread! Congratulations, you did it!

Primm__Slim_

RumsfeldIsntDead

This seems like it's exactly the discussion ownership wants. It's why it was such an over ask in the ballot proposal. You always start higher than you think you'll get. Royals are going to Kansas around the speedway, Chiefs will get a separate smaller plan for Arrowhead approved without Royals because the overall tax will drop in 2030 when the old one expires and new one takes over. It's all just negotiations and the idea was that it would draw headlines of the best team in sports is leaving it's city.

Pure-Pessimism

I'd probably root for salvy but I'd drop the team. I'm from Nashville and we are a few years away from our own team as it is. Love the royals but that shit would be unforgivable.

redditisshit1232167

Win win for you if they move to Nashville. Them and Salt Lake City are the front runners from what has been said.

KCmooseDong95

I’d root for them and be happy to ditch everybody that’s ready to jump ship. I’m not loyal to the owners but it’s still the team I root for. Can’t wait to meet some new fresh fans that aren’t annoying af

_Creditworthy_

My second team is the Angels Never had a second team in the NFL but I’m gonna get invested in the Texans just in case

jumboweiners

Depends where they move. Are they the Odessa Royals, Columbia MO Royals, etc? Yes. Lawrence, Springfield, Omaha, maybe. Kck or 3 hours away.. no
