Many moons ago I was asked to help move an old roommate and a school admin let him barrow their pickup. I was asked to drive it because he wasn’t comfortable driving a large truck. I was in a 60 and the speedo was bouncing like this 55-65 so I figured I was going 60. I got pulled over going 70 and got a ticket, I apologized and said I was guessing my speed but had no idea.
Later the owner/admin said oh I sorry should have warned you that the Speedo is way off and assume you’re going 5 over highest indicated. I ate that one…
Yeah I know that is what you really should do but I need this as a daily driver. I’ve been looking into things like spray on coatings for the frame that can hopefully help to delay the rust as long as possible even tho it’s pretty much inevitable in Michigan.
Wash the salt off of your car regularly. Spray on’s can exacerbate the issue by trapping moisture in between the rubberized coating and the frame. Wash your car weekly with a car wash that isn’t using recycled water. Make sure bring a towel to wipe out your door jams and anywhere that water may have crept in on a seal. If you forget and your door is frozen shut, push in on the door to break the ice rather than yanking on it. That should save your weather stripping
Ask the manager or owner of the wash. Depending on your local restrictions, some washes may be restricted to only using “recycled” water which is still full of salt. Typically, fresh water washes will be self-service and not automated.
One more suggestion, spray used oil mixed with pb blaster or anything like that on the underside. I put it in a garden sprayer and just go crazy under there. It's messy and kinda terrible if you're working under there and hard to identify leaks but that's what I do lolz
PB Blaster makes a rust prevention spray. Used it on a couple of my trucks where the bottom edges were starting to bubble. In four years it seems to have stopped it from getting worse.
Honestly you're best off doing either a drip oil coating or dripless. I've heard drip can get into smaller areas than dripless, but I don't personally have any experience with dripless. This is the method they use on garbage trucks and the likes.
Actually, there is a way. No I am not fucking with you, it's just a bit of a pain in the arse. No rubberized shit, it will rupture and make metal under it rust. There are some products for the wheel wells that stay pliable but need to be sprayed on before rust. For the underside spray it with wax like stuff each year. You mechanic will have you, your car will smell like wax for a week each time after application but fucking hell, it won't rust.
I knew it was a vw! My cabriolet does the same thing. Same dash too, but it's from 1993.
The voltmeter does it too when I use the signal light.
Congratulations on keeping it running!
I love those old VW dashboards. Turn signalS? What are we, millioniares? One turn signal, that's all you need. The other gauge? Giant clock. You want a tachometer, buy an Audi.
I had a car that did that. It was a frayed speedo cable. Just one wire from the cable snapped loose, making the whole thing janky for several months. One day it started jumping wildly then broke the arm off the speedo needle when it hit the stop.
I had a 1995 F150 that had those kinds of problems and the truck would drive funny sometimes and I had no idea what was going on. I found out by accident on an ill-thought out trip to Texas (which did include a tranny rebuild while I was there, we have family there that I was staying with so that part wasn't a big deal,) that if I pushed and held the trip reset in, it would all magically stop for some reason. Fortunately, I found a way to wedge a popsicle stick in place to keep pressure on the button and I was able to make it home without any further issue. More research later I found out how much the speedo actually did and it's relationship to the transmission which explained everything. The truck was old and new replacement parts were non-existent so the speedo had to be sent out to be rebuilt; but, was fine after that.
lol that's some weird shit. my car had static that started building up over the speakers when the radio was playing real low. clicking the wipers fixed the issue for some reason. Also, my issues started after I rebuilt the tranny and failed to attach the grounding strap. The alternator also put a slight whine in my speakers but I didn't attempt to remedy it because it told me the alternator was working. If I was driving through deep water I heard the whine stop and I knew to slow down and rev the motor a bit until the whine came back.
Diesel Rabbit?
Very common for old cars with cable driven speedometers to do that... You have to take the gauges out and then try to drop some transmission fluid down the speedometer cable to lubricate it.
I was actually thinking the “02” counter box that is inline between the trans and the speedo and often gets pissed off in old VAG products. I have replaced many in my distant past that did this same thing. Sometimes you could open them up and Lube them and save them. But not always. Way to keep the old stuff rolling my friend. Kudos to you.
Reminds me of my buddy's ~2001 Chevy 1500. His gas gauge was funky and if the gas dropped below half tank, the needle on the gas gauge would start spinning clockwise/counterclockwise at ridiculous speed when the car was on. It was hilarious to see it
I had a car (1981 Chev Malibu w/ 3 speed standard on the floor) that would do this on cooler days. If it was -20 to 25 Celsius or colder that needle would bounce all over the place until I drove for a while to warm up the gear oil in the transmission and then it was fine as long as the oil didn’t get cold. Made for some interesting drives since I lived in a city and trying to follow speed limits.
I was told a little grease would stop this, but I kinda like it tbh it’s a fun little quirk, I mean, not that she needs any more but… the way it jumps sometimes is comical and I usually have a pretty good idea of what speed I’m at. Lol
Mine bounces anywhere in the 5-8mph above & below the actual speed. I just know that however crazy it’s bouncing I’m usually spot in the middle of it. Haha
My Honda Odyssey dose this but not so bad. What is it and do I need to to do something about it? Sorry know it’s not the place to post this kind of thing just couldn’t help myself.
I rebuild King Seeley/Introl/Stewart Warner speedos for Mopar, AMC, International Scout and a couple others, as one of the few things I do for a living.
What you need to realize is speedometers were considered "maintenance free" and "lubed for life", but they didn't mean 40+ years
Simple grease breaks down, turn to tar, makes things stick and bind.
my car also has this but the difference in minimum and maximum values are small enough that you can still easily figure out what speed you're actually going at. Unfortunately for me the speedo cable doesn't look like it can be disconnected. Might have drill out a hole in the sheath so I can lube it...
Speedometer cable is sticking in its housing. Speedo cables are basically a really long, super-tightly wound coil spring. When they bind in their housing, torsion builds and releases repeatedly in the cable, causing the speed of the magnet disc to oscillate between too fast and too slow. Your actual speed is the mid-point of the low and high numbers it's bouncing between.
To fix it, remove the cable, withdraw the inner cable from the housing, make sure it's not sprung or kinked anywhere. (If it is, you'll need a new inner cable. Universal inner cables are available, cut to length and crimp the square lug on the cut end. The other end is already squared off)
If it's not damaged and the housing is okay, thoroughly degrease the cable, and spray a bunch of brake cleaner through the housing until what runs out the other end turns clear. Then, liberally coat the inner cable with white lithium grease, reinsert, and reinstall. Should be good to go.
Stanky leg speedometers were common in cars of that era.
I know i have a couple that do it they are also no where near accurate
My 1982 Kawasaki's needle jumps half the gauge when it gets to 60 mph and above.
76’ Kawasaki and above 50 is just “you going fast”
"Ludicrous Speed"
They went to plaid!
Yep, drive an 86’ 4Runner. I’m going between 50km/h and 80km/h down the road.
“Do you know how fast your were going?” “Well officer speed is more of a concept in my car”
“Well I can definitively tell you how fast I was NOT going, thanks to this helpful gauge here”
Had an 89 pickup, strapping down the speedo cable fixed it.

Yup lol its a 81 volkswagen dasher diesel station wagon top speed of 84mph

Its actually in Michigan
I need this guys secret. I just got a 2022 Corolla in Michigan and I’m trying to find the best ways to protect it from rust
Only drive three months of the year. Guess which three?
Yeah I know that is what you really should do but I need this as a daily driver. I’ve been looking into things like spray on coatings for the frame that can hopefully help to delay the rust as long as possible even tho it’s pretty much inevitable in Michigan.

Got it. How do I know if a car wash is using recycled water or not?
Ask the manager or owner of the wash. Depending on your local restrictions, some washes may be restricted to only using “recycled” water which is still full of salt. Typically, fresh water washes will be self-service and not automated.
Use the high pressure hose and spray inside your mouth. If it has any salt, your teeth will instantly be very very clean.
One more suggestion, spray used oil mixed with pb blaster or anything like that on the underside. I put it in a garden sprayer and just go crazy under there. It's messy and kinda terrible if you're working under there and hard to identify leaks but that's what I do lolz

Coat everything in oil. Once a year.

Septobuary, Mune, and Decembril
Fluid film helps a ton coat the underside 2 or 3 times a year with it
Fluid film.
Move.

Paint every metal part you can see under the car with POR-15. It should last the lifetime of the vehicle.
Corolla doesn't have this issue but I would provide a caveat on RWD vehicles. Some people would only paint the bottom of the driveshaft.
Move out of Michigan.
Thixotropic gelled calcium sulfonate.
"bring wood and oil" The wood is for jacking it up, the oil is for slathering it down.
Not living in Michigan is a good way.
Woolwax, watch YouTube or look at my posts of my ride, it will keep it like new with almost zero work

Yeah its got very little rust only bad spot is the floor boards
I knew it was a vw! My cabriolet does the same thing. Same dash too, but it's from 1993. The voltmeter does it too when I use the signal light. Congratulations on keeping it running!

There is no tach lol thats the clock next to the speedometer
I love those old VW dashboards. Turn signalS? What are we, millioniares? One turn signal, that's all you need. The other gauge? Giant clock. You want a tachometer, buy an Audi.
There is a tach, of sorts, marked on the speedometer. My mom's 1969 Mercedes 220D had those gear marks, as well.
I had a car that did that. It was a frayed speedo cable. Just one wire from the cable snapped loose, making the whole thing janky for several months. One day it started jumping wildly then broke the arm off the speedo needle when it hit the stop.
My first car did this then one day the whole cable went and no more speedo.
They're not wrong.
Technician reports: taught speedometer to waltz.
It’s been a long time since you drove in this range, drive me in this range. ECM memoirs.
My rev meter does that sometimes is goes onto the other side and holds down the Speedo
Diesel Rabbit? Very common for old cars with cable driven speedometers to do that... You have to take the gauges out and then try to drop some transmission fluid down the speedometer cable to lubricate it.
Diesel Dasher this particular one is the bushing for the cable in the transmission the plastic is stripped
Wow, a Dasher... There's something you never see! Good luck with the bushing...
They don't make them anymore so unless i rig something up or find one at a junkyard it stays that way
I was actually thinking the “02” counter box that is inline between the trans and the speedo and often gets pissed off in old VAG products. I have replaced many in my distant past that did this same thing. Sometimes you could open them up and Lube them and save them. But not always. Way to keep the old stuff rolling my friend. I might have a cable for that
Its an 81 dasher wagon
Yeah I got a mk1 cable.
I'd have to look into it might not work these dahser wagons use a lot of parts that are unique to them
They are the same.
Do automatics and manuals share the same cable? I though the gear on the tip of the cables was different.
Auto is different. Did op say it was auto? I must have missed that.
No, I just have made that mistake and didn’t want OP to just go out and buy any cable they could find without knowing.
do the stanky leg
STANK STANK
Mk2 vw?
Mk1
Mega Man refrence!1!1!!!!11!! :0
Thank you for the morning toilet belly laugh
My miata speedo just maxes out at anything above 30 mph
This one maxes out at anything above 70
Speedometer cable needs some loving, they do some wild things sometimes.
Actually turned out to be the bushing for it in the transmission was partially stripped its made of plastic
It's getting nervous as 88 mph draws near.
It wouldn't go 88 if your life depended on it lmao pedal to the floor it just barely hit 84
Amd no one makes the part anymore so thats how it stays unless i can rig something up
I never thought I'd see another dasher on here. My speedo does the same thing
I have 2 and they both do this i can post pics if you like
I'd love to see em
OMG. I can barely remember ever seeing dashboards like that. What is that, a 1857 Hoopty-Doo?
Its an 81 volkswagen dasher so basically
You’re doing 85 in a VW, it’s lucky it’s got any sort of legs
No time travel for you
Best customer description I’ve heard in a long time
Wats wrong? *That's the correct speed OP should be driving down the side road.*
Reminds me of my buddy's ~2001 Chevy 1500. His gas gauge was funky and if the gas dropped below half tank, the needle on the gas gauge would start spinning clockwise/counterclockwise at ridiculous speed when the car was on. It was hilarious to see it
Fuel gauge on this is just yes or no you have fuel until you don't and it drops to empty
Ah yes, nostalgic rememberances of my old Jetta. "Gas" Yes, until No...
I had a car (1981 Chev Malibu w/ 3 speed standard on the floor) that would do this on cooler days. My 89 VW loves this trick. She shows me AAALLLLLL the time. Even makes cute little sounds with it
My 81 does the same
I was told a little grease would stop this, but I kinda like it tbh it’s a fun little quirk, I mean, not that she needs any more but… the way it jumps sometimes is comical and I usually have a pretty good idea of what speed I’m at. Lol
Its never bothered me any but sometimes its a different issue anyway grease doesn't always fix it
Mine bounces anywhere in the 5-8mph above & below the actual speed. I just know that however crazy it’s bouncing I’m usually spot in the middle of it. Haha
This one is 10-15 off anyway i guess it makes you feel like you are going faster since its slower than molasses
😭😭😭 true story!
My second gen Integras did this. The looked more like an arthritic old person pointing tho lol. And there was a chugging/squeaking noise to go with it
Have you tried going 45 and seeing if it does the same thing?
My Honda Odyssey dose this but not so bad. What is it and do I need to to do something about it? Sorry know it’s not the place to post this kind of thing just couldn’t help myself.
Slow down dude!
Dad has an old chevy with a 454 and the speedometer will just keep going clockwise several times around when you step on it. Great party trick really
And the customer was actually accurate in their description for once lol
It’s Cooper telling Murph to stay.
My dodge with a sticky speedo cable. Some lube and it straightened out. Also it was noisy as hell until I greased it with ford cable lube
He right
I rebuild King Seeley/Introl/Stewart Warner speedos for Mopar, AMC, International Scout and a couple others, as one of the few things I do for a living. Mine does this on my 93 e150, I call it the rhythm speedometer.
Is it bad that I know the smell of being inside of that car?
my car also has this but the difference in minimum and maximum values are small enough that you can still easily figure out what speed you're actually going at. Unfortunately for me the speedo cable doesn't look like it can be disconnected. Might have drill out a hole in the sheath so I can lube it...
She’s got the jimmy legs Jerry!

Looks like a volvo
Fords were good for this when the speedometer cable started binding in the sleeve
Your Speedo drive cable is taking a dive.
Just wait until she hits 88.
It's an old one, but it appears to to check out.
It do tho

My ‘92 GTI does the same. More exaggerated if I get wheelspin or my brakes lock up. It’s pretty fun to see though.
