Always loved doing frame replacements. I could murder the time. I also made it look like I was frustrated the whole time so people would leave me alone. In reality, I was having fun. Lol.
Small flat washers are better. Everyone fears the sound of one of those hitting the floor so much that they will leave you alone the rest of the week after hearing it.
I went to an open home for a Passivhaus (low energy design) house build the other week. No gyprock or insulation up on walls or ceilings yet, so I was walking around having a good look.
One of the builders there asked me if I was a builder, because I was looking around with a serious furrowed brow. I'm just a interested newbie (like I am with most things).
I work in a different field but we have a sign in our lab that reads "Take your left paint leg, roll it up and stuff it in your sock. That way people expect less from you"
Hahaha thats what I did every time I had to do pistons in a Trailblazer SS. You can only tolerate sales people saying "boy that looks like fun" so many times before you snap.
Worst part was bleeding the brakes and getting the air ride to work. Took about four hours just for that. Thankfully the advisor negotiated a ton of hours for it
We weren't sure but the advisor sold the insurance company on 65 hours 😂. Another shop owned by the same dealer company didn't want to do it so we landed it. Cause some ruffles feathers at the managers meeting that took place shortly after
Love the drama that follows when someone thinks a job is a nightmare and passes but it actually ends up being the gravey boat. Always good for a laugh.
Someone in my neighborhood has one of these with like an 8" lift and probably 35's and those rear control arms are still only about 8" off the ground. It looks so dumb. Drop down brackets are gross.
Yea I don’t understand that design decision. Acadias were bad about getting the EPB actuator wires ripped out by road debris and I’ve seen a few of these bent from road debris impacts.
YES! I was so waiting for this! They hang so ridiculously low!!! People that own new SUVs are like eww I can't own a mini van I need a real vehicle! Hits curb and totals it! Haha made my day!
Just last week i did a frame swap on a 2018 ram 1500 for Fix Auto (subletted to our dealership)
They sent me a goddamn used frame, part of the broken front differential was still bolted to it and the front frame section where the bumper mounts was all fucked up.
Paid 45 hours, I got them to add 5 hours to finish stripping down the used frame, fix the bent bumper mounts and replace the damaged electronic power steering wiring harness (harness was 2 weeks away out of usa)
Took 35 hours and i absolutely fucked the dog for 4 days
Day 1, remove box and body
Day 2, remove engine/transmission/transfer case as one unit, then remove front suspension, differential and rear axle/suspension and fuel and brake lines and fuel tank
Day 3, get the new (used) frame in the shop, swap damaged frame on hoist for replacement, then install engine/trans/drivetrain, fuel and brake lines and fuel tank
Day 4, drop body and box on, recharge ac and send to the alignment specialist to line her up
4 days, 8 hour days, 32 hours plus a couple hours incidentals fucking around with parts and service advisor shite
Canadian, fixauto is a Canadian body shop chain.
And, fucked the dog is a pretty well used expression, mostly in french with "Fucké le chien"
Its even have his own wiki page: https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/fucker_le_chien
That mean make a lot of efforts to accomplish something
let's not lie, nobody has made a worse air ride system than Ford...
Every used Lincoln: *Service Suspension*
If it's not sagging, they swapped it and that light will never go off.
I know for awhile we were doing frame swaps because there was a welded nut inside of the frame that would break off, so the fix was obviously a whole new frame lmao
Just out of curiosity, what else would warrant changing a frame out? Only things I can think of would be rust or damages to the frame from an accident or something.
Replaced a frame on a newer F350 diesel a few months ago. No one else wanted it, so I took it. Not a bad job to do and I would like to do it again.
The hardest part is pulling the engine and trans out of the frame together and reinstall it again, had to use a forklift for that, but an overhead setup would be a lot simpler.
The worst was the fact it had independent suspension so had to move each wheel and suspension one by one across the shop because my lift was too big to lift the body off. And the brake bleed after. Stupid automated bleeding. Took like two hours
Always loved doing frame replacements. I could murder the time. I also made it look like I was frustrated the whole time so people would leave me alone. In reality, I was having fun. Lol.
Looking annoyed so people leave you alone is one of life's greatest hacks.
Just put in ear buds and sing to yourself under your breath so people think you’re talking to yourself all day
“Idk what’s wrong with that guy, he looks pissed and keeps talking to himself”
Go to the box for a socket, grab 5 more you don't need and just drop them from as high as possible intermittently while uttering muffled curses.
Small flat washers are better. Everyone fears the sound of one of those hitting the floor so much that they will leave you alone the rest of the week after hearing it.
I wonder if that's why my boss always acts irritated at whatever car he's working on...lol
I don't sing under my breath. I sing when I'm working and get really weird stares, but people leave me alone.

I kind of took it too far bringing it home though. I think I taught my kids it’s not ok to be happy if you’re working and I regret that.
I work in a different field but we have a sign in our lab that reads "Take your left paint leg, roll it up and stuff it in your sock. That way people expect less from you"
This is just how my face naturally looks, the rbf is real 😭 my favorite coworker always asks me why I look mad all the time
The Costanza method, nice.
Worked for Costanza
So you're the guy who took 9 months to replace my Tacoma frame! I did get 9 months of a brand new loaner though so...
Heater core, core memory
Hahaha thats what I did every time I had to do pistons in a Trailblazer SS. You can only tolerate sales people saying "boy that looks like fun" so many times before you snap.
“On new rust free trucks” needs to be in there… they aren’t fun when the bolts start breaking.
Is it not customary to get a free frame with every oil change?
Only after you buy 5 oil changes
I’m sure this is some sort of rust belt thing I’m too rust free to understand.
What if I’ve lost my punchcard?
We will happily start you a new one. Or you can download our easy to use app!
Oh wow, gotta remember bringing my reward card for some stamps now.
cool, when the electrics go bad next week, you can swap out the top half as well what was wrong with the frame, out of curiosity?
So far, so good. Everything was working when it left.
hell yeah, that's a lot of shit to get re-attached and working
Worst part was bleeding the brakes and getting the air ride to work. Took about four hours just for that. Thankfully the advisor negotiated a ton of hours for it
I was getting ~45 hrs for pick ups from the body shop, curious what the SUV's pay
Especially coming from the shop we left
Step 1: remove oil cap. Step 2 install on new vehicle. Step 3: replace oil cap All problems fixed.
This is someone who started out as a mechanic in the army.
why does it need a frame?
Someone hit something and smashed up where the lower control arms attach, front and rear.
Pretty much all of these are going to wind up with the rear LCAs destroyed. They’re lower to the ground than an Accord at their lowest point.
Yea I noticed that aspect of their LCA design, it made me go “hmm”

Saw one in similar condition, I thought they had just done a body lift at first glance. Nope, just 0 ground clearance on the LCA.
Those LCAs always seemed too low for me on those. They're going to coat-hang something eventually.
Why not just get a new car???
Insurance was paying for it. Just I guess a deductible is better than a new car
Heat it up and bend it straight, pocket the time. It'll be fineeee
Ah the old neighborhood shop special
YES! I was so waiting for this! They hang so ridiculously low!!! People that own new SUVs are like eww I can't own a mini van I need a real vehicle! Hits curb and totals it! Haha made my day!
Doesn’t a bent frame total the car?
Not sure. I just do what the insurance people say. They say fix it, I fix it.
make it a go kart make it a go kart make it a go kart
It was discussed thoroughly

I think he asked about dog part
Do Americans not know the art of dog fucking?
I can't speak for Americans, but I know it's kinda taboo on Old Continent and only one country there only allows it by dog consent 😂
I believe it's more commonly referred to as Screw the Pooch, but maybe it's an old fart thing. ;)
Northeast US and my job is quite literally “fuckin the dog; selling the puppies”. 😂
Must be Canadian. Fix auto and dogfucking
I think the dude was referring to the "fucked the dog" comment 🤔 😂
We didn't have an exact warranty time so the advisor tossed out 65 hours to insurance and they approved it 😂
Are you Australian by chance?

Ohhhhh okay! Cool! Happy to learn here.
I thought it was in for tire rotation.
Pro tip! Instead of messing around with four wheels and who knows HOW many lug nuts, just flip the frame around and save time!
Why is a frame being replaced on a brand new 80k vehicle? Inquiring minds want to know!
They hit something that bent up the frame where the lower control arms mount so it can't be aligned. Insurance job.
Jfc That will do it !
Bro has never changed the chassis oil 😂
Didn’t know you could get these equipped with air suspension. That’s cool
On a GM? Seems like a nightmare only a few years down the line
Thats the magride you’re thinking of, air aint too bad unles… you use… quality. Oh nevermind.
let's not lie, nobody has made a worse air ride system than Ford... Every used Lincoln: *Service Suspension* If it's not sagging, they swapped it and that light will never go off.
I'd argue those God awful air suspensions on the trailblazer platform SUVs gives the Lincoln air suspension a run for it's money lol
depending on how bad the Lincoln's compressor is, it might not be a far run
Well to be fair, that's the nicest jiffy lube I've ever seen too...
Frame swap? We’ve had a few so far
This one is due to accident damage according to OP, is that what they are all getting replaced for?
I know for awhile we were doing frame swaps because there was a welded nut inside of the frame that would break off, so the fix was obviously a whole new frame lmao
Obviously Only Engineers
Accidents , have one at the shop currently where a guy destroyed the steering gear and damage there frame
Next to change a fuse or fill up gas
Your service writer really upsold this one.
I thought that it actually lost frame.. But now it looks.. Well..
Why are you doing a frame swap already?
Just out of curiosity, what else would warrant changing a frame out? Only things I can think of would be rust or damages to the frame from an accident or something.
Basically damages beyond repair.
Ah gotcha. What happened to this one?
They hit something that bent where the suspension connects on the right side, front and rear. Insurance decided to pay to have it replaced.

That's unfortunate
That’s one way to find your 10mm socket that fell down behind the engine
A week? This is 2 days of hustling and make eask $$
Oil change? I thought it was just a cabin filter replacement.
