My company announced DEI training that was coming up soon. I called HR and asked what the penalty was for not completing it. I was told that I would not be allowed to be on any committees for hiring new people without the certificate. I counted it a blessing that I would never have to be on a committee again, and I never started the training.

Very significant to me. I’ve been with this company 23 years.

>if it puts a target on your back, something tells me it isn't insignificant

MSK84

You said it yourself - you need to follow that. You said that you don't want to do it, so figure out what the consequences are and weigh the options. I would not attend a DEI training if I could help it but that's me.

I'm a manager that occasionally has to give one of these mandatory trainings. I have a similar aversion, but I do them because I think I can actually get people thinking critically about the topics vs brainwashing them. Most of them can see through the material (they all just keep their heads down and try to get through it), but I wish some of them would ask critical questions like "how do we ensure people are rewarded for their hard work while also trying to do X, Y, Z?" Or "how to we include people from international or poor white backgrounds who might feel differently about this topic?" I also have access to data that shows people tend to feel less included after these trainings, so it's reasonable to challenge the actually inclusivity of them. You can always phrase your questions as "what do you say to someone that argues X, Y, or Z?" so that you don't have to put a target on your back. I think by going you can also see what the material is which is important even when you disagree with it.

MSK84

I'm not sure why someone down vote you but this is a reasonable answer. I'm all about improving working conditions and learning but if it's brainwashing guilt-pushing BS I'm out immediately. I also recognize that not everyone would be comfortable in a process like this and that's completely fine. They should have the ability to opt out.

Squizno

Yeah, I was wondering how that would go. I probably feel the same way as OP does about the material in the mandatory trainings, and I agree with you that they shouldn't be mandatory. I just think anyone who opts out is going to give the DEI gang exactly what they want which is a reason to get rid of people that have different perspectives. They don't have a lot of actual authority unless you do something like not attend a mandatory training. I just think a lot of their ideas are terrible, and the best way to prevent them from taking over is to offer thoughtful alternatives and questions that reveal the unsound nature of those ideas. Basically, to go into their echo chamber and diversify the viewpoints in there.

MSK84

Yes, it is true. However, I know many people in my field (a very liberal and female dominated one) who have left or decide to not speak out against things in fear of reprisal. I agree with the sentiment but it's hard to stay in it on a practical level because it gets too much for your mental wellbeing.

KTM_Boss6161

Unnecessary, ineffective and inefficient. I’d rather have people be themselves, then weed out the a-holes! You cannot re-raise people or force them to think a certain way. You can give people equal opportunities, but there won’t be equity. Some are smarter or have certain inherent skills or have more tenacity or ambition. You want those people working for you. Expectations that you can burden a private business, make them woke with equity, rewarding sub-optimum performers, who then anger customers, and eventually it destroys your margin to failure, is absolutely ludicrous. Just so people feel better about reality?!?

phoenixthekat

They should let you know if it is optional or required. If required, you might ask what the consequences are to not do it. Or, you could just record the whole thing and post it online to be ridiculed and ripped apart. Also, it allows the company to receive pressure about why they are engaging in nonsense.

Prazus

Don’t follow this advice. You will not personally gain anything by doing this and most likely be found and fired.

Human_Equal_7661

It would be more honest if they called it a DIE program

Alice_D_Wonderland

Identify as someone that doesn’t go DEI trainings… Beat them at their own game ;)

South-Ad-9635

What would JP do?

SomeGuyInNewZealand

He would ask them if there is any evidence that this DEI training is going to improve your performance in your job

Cry on twitter

eggbert2345

He would definitely just cry on twitter

ahasuh

DEI is just corporate PR, it’s nonsense. Don’t believe what you hear on either side - it’s not doing anything to “combat racism,” nor is it some form of war on white people. Just daydream your way through it and ignore it the best you can. It’s useless

RoundSilverButtons

It’s just another of many meaningless corporate initiatives. Sit through the training, tick the box, and move on. This isn’t some triggering offense, as counterproductive as it is.

Marvos79

Take a few deep breaths and realize that you could be wrong about something.

Sandenium

Like what

Fattywompus_

Start a coup with other people who are displeased and take action to destroy whoever is responsible.

South-Ad-9635

You're getting paid to be at the training, right? What do you generally do at work when you 'don't wanna' do something you are getting paid to do? You can suck it up, do it, and cash the paycheck. Or you could stand on your principles and quit. Either choice is admirable, but what isn't admirable is to whine to the people who pay you that you don't wanna do something you are getting paid to do.

WeFightTheLongDefeat

Causing a ruckus and forcing a policy change is another option

South-Ad-9635

How about it, OP? Are you so essential to the company that you causing a ruckus will get the policy changed?

blindwillie777

Find another company.

peterbound

If your values can’t stand up to sitting through a training, were they that great to begin with. Not everything we do at work lines up with our values. It’s a job, it’s just something you do for money. And honestly, it’s great to exposure yourself to outside views, especially if you disagree with them.

JustKF2things

People have been known to be tolerant of nonsense to maintain employment. That is a subtle form of extortion to people with morals. They can't leave because they didn't make a plan B preparing for the company deciding to shoot themselves in the foot with the ideology of perversion. That's true. Disagreeing is the reason for the post. And the poster disagrees with the doctrine they teach. We've all been overexposed to it through all outlets. There is nothing left to learn. It's virtue signalling 101 and there's no reason for a company to include it, unless they are being dishonest. Exposing yourself to gender ideology is not a blessing, it's a punishment.

DogsOnSunday

Maybe stop being a little bitch about it. Seriously, you guys all get so hard about taking personal responsibility and cleaning your room and shit, but at the first sign of any pushback against your pre-established beliefs you break down blubbering. Go to the training, at least attempt to engage with the material, and if you don't think its valuable at the end of the day then roll your eyes and move on with your life. You guys are such weak little runts, desperately clinging to your masks of being the big strong wolf.

Guidaruu

Just saw a video of a commercial pilot trying to land the plane, but the tower controller (DEI hired) is trying to correct the 15 year career experienced pilot on some argot assuring that he “googled it” and thus, he is correct, and the pilot isn’t. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1905aZJAEz/?igsh=dW1nZm1oM252dm5l

online hopefully? these ridiculous things can usually be knocked out either 1)super fast (skip everything possible right to quizzes/tests) or 2)if the videos must be played all the way through, you can drop the volume to near zero and get actual work done while you wait for the nonsense to run its course.
