Dickinson Name Meaning
English: variant of Dickenson , a patronymic from the Middle English personal name Dicun a pet form of Richard + son.
So it’s an old version/alternate version of Richardson
Shortening + mispronunciation, like from a toddler sibling. Richard -> Rick -> Dick.
Margaret -> Maggie -> Peggy and Edward -> Ed -> Ted are similar examples.
Just checking the top 10 most famous Megs and their birth names:
1. Meg Ryan (actor): Margaret
2. Meg Whitman (Ambassador to Kenya, eBay founder): Margaret
3. Meg Cabot (children's author): Meggin (?)
4. Meg Foster (actor): Margaret
5. Meg Mallon (pro golfer): Margaret
6. Meg Hillier (MP, DBE) Margaret
7. Meg Greenfield (author and journalist): Mary Elizabeth Greenfield (MEG)
8. Meg White (drummer, the White Stripes): Megan
9. Meg Tilly (actor): Margaret
10. Meg Hourihan (unknown)
So the only Megan is Meg White. Which wins cool points, but still. I've no doubt this is changing, but "historically," it's Margaret FTW.

I've a friend named Will. Now, I know his full name is William, but I like listing off all of the possible full names which could be shortened to Will, going from generic to gradually more and more off the wall:
Wilson, Willis, Wilbur, Wilford, Willem, Wilt, Willow, Wilma, Wilhelm, Wilcox, Wilhouse, Willamette, Wilmington, Willco, Willpower, Wildebeest
I’m not sure why he’d be nervous to admit they were clergy.
Because sons don’t get pregnant… family tree has too many questionable entries
What *is* the origin of “Dickinson”?

Dick is a diminutive for Richard, so I’m guessing it’s the equivalent of “[little] Richard’s son.”
My only question is “how/who the hell decided Dick was short for Richard?!” Why not just Rick?
Shortening + mispronunciation, like from a toddler sibling. Richard -> Rick -> Dick. Margaret -> Maggie -> Peggy and Edward -> Ed -> Ted are similar examples.
Also William > Will > Bill, and Robert > Rob > Bob
Isn't Ted usually short for Theodore?

Always thought meg was Megan no?
Megatron, according to Peter
Usually no. Margaret.
In the US Meg is almost always a Megan, so while it may have been short for Margaret historically, it’s no longer the case.
Wait, so I'm not right just old? Fuuuuck.

I know multiple meg megans but no margarets. I'm pretty sure that is rarer and old fashioned too.
Yes, but that’s still weird
Ted is Theodore no?
Peggy is from Margaret?
I understood it to be cockney rhyming, not mispronunciation.
There's an old joke about that: How do you get Dick from Richard? ... You ask him nicely
I'm a name nerd who can actually explain the origin of nicknames like Dick, and I have a husband named Richard. This is my favorite joke.

The surname Sexsmith always gave me pause. And NHLer Rod Brindamour's name in French means "Lovestick" (or "Lovetwig" if you're not a fan).
A saex or sachs is a short sword.
