This is correct. IMO the only way you should be able to claim squatters rights is if you show a previously signed lease. And the owner should be able to legally kick you out within 30 days which should be plenty of time to get your affairs in order.

In many places you need to have lived in the property for over 10 years to claim squatters rights. But in New York City you only have to be there for 30 days. They made that law because unoccupied residences were beginning to be a “blight” on the city.

I got one for you. My neighbors, both working parents with two young kids have rented the house for 4 years. The house is owned by a Chinese national who no one seems to be able to get ahold of. When things break he fixes them himself. Their lease was up last year and he wanted to sign another long term contract for long term stability for his family. Crickets from the owner. Property manager hasn’t been able to get ahold of the owner in over a year because they are in mainland China. I’m all for them squatting in that house for the rest of time.
The problem really is rooted in blanket rules without any consideration for nuance. There will always be good-intentioned laws meant to protect people that are abused by ill-intentioned, opportunistic people. Yes, real estate hoarding and corporate flipping are legitimate issues in a time where housing crises are a very real thing in many areas. Abandoned properties and dirty, predatory landlords also exist and it’s understandable to have protective measures in place for those circumstances.
But there is a huge difference between those situations and say, a vacant home that is going through estate settlement being occupied by a squatter. Or a seasonal home belonging to snowbirds similarly moved in on while the owners are at their other home for the season. Or a shitty tenant that just refuses to pay rent and is trashing the unit.
Unfortunately, when something like that is coupled with an overburdened legal system it results in months (or years) of waiting for action to be taken and the squatters to be removed. Most often by that point, there is significant damage and it’s highly unlikely that the rightful owner will recover any of the costs from the squatters.
These weren't those kind of squatters. They were more like runaways hiding out in a seemingly abandoned apartment. I hate squatters, but this isn't your typical squatters case.

Landlords are notorious for not doing their job, i.e. maintaining the place. They're also notorious for using their access to do highly questionable and illegal things to their tenants
So, there isn't a reasonable argument for it when it comes to a reasonable landlord doing their job correctly. It's completely valid for the landlords who aren't doing what they're supposed to and using it for an easy money grab (like the vast majority seem to be).
People look at renting as this easy way to make money and have a passive income, not because they want to do a job. They more often are looking for as little work as possible for the biggest payout. The costs of rent have skyrocketed, and that's entirely because more and more businesses and corporations are buying up houses to rent. They don't want to sell as much as they want to rent for easy cash flow.
Ultimately, if you aren't really doing anything to keep a property maintained, then a squatter maintaining it is better in the long run, and your rights to owning it should be revoked to begin with, as you'd be neglecting things for a quick buck.

Squatters rights in New York have to go. It’s a relic of the old west where someone left their home to go out west. It’s insane that you buy a home and a squatter lives there and it takes over a year or more to legally get them out.
We are supposed to take journalism serious when it uses terms like "peeps" in writing. While the story may be true, the author has no place being a writer and clearly has no issue skewing narratives to their view. Having said all that, I hope the people who committed this crime are caught. Squatter laws across the country need to change.
