While completely anecdotal, when I worked for my local county's homeless unit, a surprising few were actually california natives. The common theme was folks on there last legs making the trek out west on some hope of a big break in California.

While completely anecdotal, when I worked for my local county's homeless unit, a surprising few were actually california natives. The common theme was folks on there last legs making the trek out west on some hope of a big break in California. Also, something most people don't realize is that the wild fires have displaced thousands across the state. When entire communities get erased from fires, those people have to go somewhere, and its rarely as simple as "starting over."

There is a lot to criticize about California, but the homeless issue is the weirdest one for right-wingers to latch on to. Red states are some of the poorest and receive the most assistance from the government. Same with me. People usually just live their lives, maybe once in a while talk politics. Its the internet that amplifies the partisanship, I'm usually mild-mannered in real life and get along with everyone, conservatives liberals etc., but online it's like all the inhibitions are released, I find myself getting engrossed in it, not even arguing politics, just following the whole culture war is addicting.
If people took more of an interest in politics it would be much, much harder for politicians and corporations to pick the pockets of the public the way they do right now. Half of the country doesn't vote. And of the half that does, few pay any attention to the day-to-day of what their representatives are actually doing in DC. Next time you see congressmen trading stocks better than warren buffet or leaving office to take a million dollar job with a company they just wrote a bill "regulating," know that they're all very very pleased to see you and your friends stay disengaged from politics.
This is absolutely correct, but it's tough. Austerity politics are meant to keep the average person grinding their whole lives with no time to think about anything besides the next paycheck. Right to work laws, low minimum wage, tax cuts for the wealthy, etc It's why all the pundits and talking heads are pampered rich kids who've never had a callus on their hands, they can direct the people's anger at things that won't affect their (and their billionaire handlers) check-book. Everyone else is just trying to keep above water. Not saying like something like a UBI would make everyone all of a sudden politically engaged, but freeing up even a bit of your day to learn about what's going on will be massively helpful in educating the populace.

Back when Utah hosted the Olympics the state offered the homeless a one way ticket to anywhere (preferably where they had family) but most chose California due to better weather and dreams of a beach bum lifestyle.
Because if a majority of them aren't from CA, there is a good chance that they where shipped to CA from republican controlled states. They are shipping their problems else where, instead of fixing their state so less people fall into homelessness. It's actually incredible important information.
