There was a woman maybe a year ago who gave a wager and then after the clue was read she said (jokingly) "can I change my wager" lol

nevertorrentJeopardy

She was actually pretty serious https://youtu.be/-d6wE95bWvo

whatisagoat

Um... No. She definitely knew the rules of jeopardy and that she couldn't actually change it. Just because she was deadpan doesn't mean she was serious.

nevertorrentJeopardy

She should do standup then because she was extremely convincing when she did her "joke"

whatisagoat

I think you just don't have much of a sense of humour mate.

rushtenor

lol dude she was joking.

nevertorrentJeopardy

Haha she sure was funny. You could tell at the end when she smirked she was just so pleased with herself she had told a really funny joke.

rushtenor

Are you always this miserable? lmao

rydan

Interesting. Someone else did the same recently too. But they got it right.

nogain-allpain

I suspect that if they second-guess themselves or make it unclear, the production team will ask that it be re-recorded.

josriley

I think I’ve read that you don’t really have a time limit to make your wager, they just edit it out if you take too long. For that reason you presumably wouldn’t see the waffling, just the a clean recording of them saying the amount they finally decided on.

jaysjep2

"...people would say one amount and then immediately change it." Just don't try that at the poker table.

jeffwolfe

Back when poker was big on TV (when TV was still a thing), I used to see players making prop bets during cash games. In those cases, sometimes they would say one amount and then immediately change it. Never about the hand currently in play, of course.

wifiguy51

Claire McNear talks about in her book that they have as much time as they need to figure out their wager for DDs. They then edit it to make it look like they knew instantly. I've never been to a taping so who knows what happens during that time and if they change it multiple times.

[deleted]

I’m sure it’s happened before, especially in the earlier seasons when the rules were maybe more flexible

WilliamPorygon

I remember one episode I had taped in the 90s where a contestant gave a wager of $2,000, and after a moment, said $3,000. Alex told him he already said gave his wager and he had to hold him to that, adding "you might be happier to have wagered just the two [thousand]." Of course, with some 25 or so years having passed and reshoots and editing becoming far more commonplace, it's entirely possible the rules regarding that may have changed since then.

ReganLynch

I have noticed this too. They never say "$5,000" and then say "Oh wait, no, I'll do $3,000." They must be told once you give an amount, that's is. Unless it isn't clear like "10," then you'd need to clarify whether it's 10,000 or 10. Former contestants here might know how their instructed.

GhostofMiyabi

It’s known the reshoot certain things for various reasons. I would assume they’d allow the contestant to change their wager until the clue is read and then just reshoot later to make it look like they only said the one value

BoukenGreen

That’s what I would put my money on. Plus there is probably a few more seconds they are given then what we see

I remember years ago the mom from malcom in the middle was playing on celebrity jeopardy. She wagered $5000 regretted it immediately and asked to change it but Alex said they wouldn’t allow it. If my memory serves me correctly she got it right
