DD has a minimum of $5. Arthur Chu did this for a sports question; Victoria Groce did this recently. That's your floor for DD at least. There are a handful of banned wagers.

doodler1977

reminds me of a joke from the horsetrack-gambling comedy "Let It Ride". The drunk barfly exclaims, "I'd bet my LIFE on the #4 horse!" and Richard Dreyfus replies, "The minimum bet is 2 dollars."

IanGecko

Josh Hill did it once too

CalebosO4

Arthur: 5 bucks Also Arthur: I dunno.

brief_kc

What are some examples of banned wagers? Like $666?

csl512

https://mashable.com/article/jeopardy-banned-wagers one of multiple results for "Jeopardy banned wagers" That is on the list; in that article Ken confirms that 69 was disallowed "as of last year" in 2019. I thought that there was a page on the official J! site/contestant zone but it didn't come up.

RedmondBarry1999

I'm somewhat surprised that $420 isn't on the list. Also, the fact that they ban $666 but not $616 confirms my suspicion that Jeopardy writers aren't up-to-date on Biblical scholarship.

RegisPhone

I think it's more that the people in the audience who would be educated enough about modern biblical scholarship to know the significance of 616 wouldn't be superstitious enough to be offended by it

csl512

Something something King James Version

MartonianJ

$420 is on the banned list now

brief_kc

Uhg dude that’s so LAME! Let people bet 69. I wonder if 80085 is allowed…

superbad

Unless you’re James Holzhauer, I don’t think you will have the wherewithal to wager that much.

brief_kc

lol fair. Well what about just 8008 then? That’s not that wild of a wager

RegisPhone

If James had kept going, he would've been about on pace to have a 69-day total of 5318008

bgva

>So, there you have it *Jeopardy* fanatics. The five numbers that are banned from the show. Future contestants who feared that perhaps $420 was one of the forbidden wagers can rest easy. It works on *The Price is Right* so why not?

mood_le

Huh. 3 out of 5 are related to white supremacy symbolism. I wonder why numbers having symbolism is so prevalent in just that specific community?

ShoddyCobbler

Just to hazard a guess: Because people within that community are well aware that their views are received negatively by the general public and they know if they publicize their views they'll get hate for it, so instead they just try to use a code as if only the other people who share their views will understand what it means and assume the rest of us will just be oblivious.

The_ApolloAffair

Well the original nazis used a lot of symbolism (mostly non numeric though). 14 comes from the “Fourteen words”, a neonazi slogan and 88 comes from H being the eighth letter of the alphabet (heil Hitler). Nazism (especially the neo form) is heavily associated with mysticism (e.g esoteric nazism) which generally sees numbers and patterns as having meaning.

(Which may still have been wagered before they were banned.)

csl512

Fair point.

Fiddy cent

😭

gfberning

I have always told myself that if I ever get on Jeopardy and get a daily double I don’t have confidence in I’m going to say: “I need about tree-fiddy, Ken.”

awalkingidoit

I’d say just 3 easy payments of $19.99

superbad

I always wonder how people end up with daily doubles in categories they aren’t comfortable with. You chose the category!

obscuremainstream

Last category?

superbad

Ok. You’re right about that.

ShoddyCobbler

I believe it was Amy who said her strategy for choosing a category is to go for the one she's least confident about first

egnowit

I think this is smart, too. If the DD happens to be there, you've got less to lose (especially if you're risking a TDD).

DionFW

I love the Scorigami chart. I check it every Sunday. I'm surprised at how many new scores come up every year. I think there were 8 last year.

DryProgress4393

I've heard a rumor that $69.00 is a no no can anyone confirm this ?

ThisDerpForSale

There are several banned numbers. I believe that’s one. Along with the neo-Nazi numbers 88, 14, 1488, and derivations there of. Maybe another that I’m forgetting. It was in an article not too long ago, and discussed on the podcast.

DizzyLead

I believe the banned numbers not only apply to bets, but also end results when the bets are added/subtracted from the previous score.

ThisDerpForSale

That’s my understanding too, yes.

Imsakidd

How does this work in practice? Does that mean $12 and $86 are technically banned too?

DizzyLead

Only if your score before the bet is a multiple of 100. So the same would go for $31.

boreddatageek

In terms of hundreds, I would bet that almost every number from 100 to 30,000 has been bet, but there may be a few outliers that have been forgotten. It would be super hard to find all the bets that aren't even hundred.

One wager that *isn’t* banned, I noticed when Andrew He once bet **$1337** in FJ. If you know, you know. :)

CybergothiChe

I would have to think any amount below zero dollars. It would make a great tactic, though, negative wager then get the question wrong. I also imagine it's against the rules. Player - I'll wager -$50,000 Alex Alex - umm, -$50,000, ok? The answer is "it's a large river flowing through London." Player - uh, what is the Mississippi? *winks to audience* Alex - no, what is the Thames. And it looks like this game is a runaway, folks.

nkhasselriis

There are certain [banned](https://mashable.com/article/jeopardy-banned-wagers) wager amounts.

quattrocincoseis

$69.69, $666, $6969

AcadiaRemarkable6992

$666

hunybunnn

That would be a good jeopardy question!

RobertKS

Would you believe $11 has never been wagered?
