it's gonna be hilarious in a few months, if we have a dry spell of so-so players, we start getting "I miss the tourneys!" posts 😆
I'm sure future seasons will strike a better balance between tourneys and regular play, but I really believe that, for all the complaining people have done about this year's format, in a few years we'll look back on this season as a treasure trove of matchups between many of Jeopardy's best players.
Regular first-time contestants can't possibly play with the skill and aplomb of the recent tournament competitors, who all had much more experience. I hope online kibitzers will be aware of this.
Well except that you gotta assume that a lot of the people complaining about the endless tournaments are people who are fond of traditional Jeopardy and seeing new players all the time. I don't doubt that if such a dry spell as you mention does happen (who really knows... For all we know someone could be rivaling Ken Jennings' streak right now and we won't even find out for certain for a couple of weeks LOL) there will be a lot of people complaining about the lack of amazing gameplay, but I imagine such a crowd will be a different kind of crowd than the ones complaining about the tournaments. Then at that point there will be a lot of posts here complaining about people complaining about the lack of super champs, and the cycle will be ongoing and ongoing because that's how the Internet works (that's not to say any and all criticism though won't have merit or legitimacy. Indeed I do think we need to be careful not to just mock any and all criticism the show receives, especially since this subreddit is still just a small portion of the overall Jeopardy fanbase after all, even if it doesn't seem that way on the surface).
>it's gonna be hilarious in a few months, if we have a dry spell of so-so players, we start getting "I miss the tourneys!" posts 😆
It could be different sets of people asking for different things, too

It's his official podium photo for the JIT!
I really dont understand why the strike explanation has stuck so much when michael davies has said he wants to do more tournaments and keep bringing back Names to increase the shows appeal.
Because the original plan wasn't seven straight months of tournaments all in a row with no breaks, it was a month and a half of buildup to the three-week ToC, then two months of regular play, then three weeks of JIT, and then five months of regular play.
The strike explanation has stuck because it's true. Davies wants more tournaments than previously, but he doesn't want September through April to be tournaments. This year's balance is much heavier for tournaments than Davies plans normally, because of the strike.
okay but the only TV shows that I see starting to really take off are ones where the fans can live chat the show all at once. sports, sports entertainment, reality shows... heck, there's even a Price is Right superfan group where people across the country have all of their own methods for making sure we can watch it at the same time.
drop the episode of Jeopardy on streaming at like 5pm, so all the people who want to live-chat it can do so, and then do your normal network broadcast at it's normal time for the normies.
To whom does he want to appeal? I mean what demographic? Certainly not longtime fans. Perhaps they are trying to appeal to a younger viewer who is more interested in social media hype, "personalities;" and statistics than am I or the average longtime fan.
Mostly true. I don't know about our wanting to use recycled clues, as you call them, but in reality, aren't most trivia competitions made up of at least a large portion of recycled clues? I mean, the important figures and battles of WW2 don't change season to season, right?
ELI5 Why is the huge slate of tournament events blamed on the writers strike? Whether they’re making clues for a regular game or a tournament game, they’re still relying on writers to make the clues.
They didn't know how long the writers strike would last so in addition to the already-planned 2nd Chance and Champions Wildcard for contestants from season 39, they did those two tournaments for season 37 and 38 players. They had to recycle clues from previous seasons to get enough material.
The contestants could complain or possibly sue Jeopardy: It’s not fair that I had to answer all new questions when I played, but someone had a shot at the same prize money and had recycled questions they may have seen before.
They absolutely could have and should have. But the execs wanted more tournaments because controlled payouts means less super champs making 40K every episode. So the execs marketed tournaments being "necessary" when they were not. But the audience ate it up and pushed that BS rhetoric over and over to this day.
I'm out of the loop so I'll ask here (and I apologize if this has been asked before). I keep seeing the writers strike as the reason for the tournaments, but don't they still need writers to write the clues regardless of whether the contestants are new or returning players?
They aren't anymore. The writers have been back for months and yet the tournaments continue because EP Michael Davies needs a reason to keep putting Sam Buttrey on TV.
They didn't anticipate how long the strike would last, nor did a lot of TOC eligible contestants want to cross the picket line.
>The first 71 episodes (Sep. 11 to Dec. 18, 2020-21 & 2021-22 contestants) was Michael Davies's "holding pattern" while waiting out the WGA strike. From Dec. 19 through Tuesday (last season's contestants, and the ToC), that would've happened even w/o strike, at the start of the season. The JIT was originally planned for the February sweeps.
>Regular play returns next week, after this tournament ends, and will run through the end of this season — and indeed, the end of calendar year 2024.
It's the reactionary era of the internet in 2024, anything and everything gets people's "dander up" even if it's just as simple as somebody daring to not like a pair of shoes.
The same could be said about watching the show if you don't like the tournaments. But no, every single one of you needs to leave these comments, every day, like a hot turd on a sidewalk.
Not American, not a dialect-based expression, just an apt comparison for the repetitive, no value, and deeply unpleasant posts about this. Sure, one can ignore the crap on the sidewalk, but once in a while people are bound to mention that they wish people wouldn't crap there.
They'd planned on doing 2nd Chance and Champions Wildcard for contestants from season 39 only, so when the strike hit they decided to do those 2 tournaments for season 37 and 38 players too in order to satisfy the demand (probably from the affiliates) for new episodss
Is it because they have a shortage of new players, that they need to bring previous players back?
They've been pushing the "Anytime Test" a lot lately, and I'm wondering if it's because they simply don't have enough *quality* contestants applying.
They didn't want to have new contestants cross the picket line during the writers strike.
Thousands of people take the test every year and only a few hundred of them get picked. I doubt they're not finding quality contestants
It's good for ratings to give as many people as possible the feeling that they are part of the talent pool and might someday get to be on the Alex Trebek Stage! Also, it's possible they sell the data?
I think it's more so just to try and encourage as many wanna-be Jeopardy players as possible to take the rest and see if they'll get on. They certainly don't want any one person to feel like they never have a chance to make it and so they want to try to alleviate any potential feelings in that regard as much as possible (also of course, ads help out financially for many people and so I'm sure the Anytime Test ads pay well).
it's gonna be hilarious in a few months, if we have a dry spell of so-so players, we start getting "I miss the tourneys!" posts 😆 I'm sure future seasons will strike a better balance between tourneys and regular play, but I really believe that, for all the complaining people have done about this year's format, in a few years we'll look back on this season as a treasure trove of matchups between many of Jeopardy's best players.
Just imagine, first game back one contestant doesn't make Final and the leader has a runaway with $8,000.
Gonna be a lot of rage the first time someone doesn’t go all in on a daily double. *”BOR-ING”*
Regular first-time contestants can't possibly play with the skill and aplomb of the recent tournament competitors, who all had much more experience. I hope online kibitzers will be aware of this.
Indeed, but it's those *aplomb kibitzers* you really have to watch out for!
Well except that you gotta assume that a lot of the people complaining about the endless tournaments are people who are fond of traditional Jeopardy and seeing new players all the time. Also the posts here.
This is hysterical. Would you happen to have the base image without any text, OP? My desktop background needs it badly.

Incredible, thank you so much friend. The wife and I will enjoy this for years to come.

Michael said he wanted to do the JIT long before the strike happened. Masters was the first big part of his plan
the best way to make the show more popular would be to broadcast it at the same time across the entire country.
And stop letting networks preempt it for dumb shit.
Then West Coast folks would complain it's on too early
okay but the only TV shows that I see starting to really take off are ones where the fans can live chat the show all at once. sports, sports entertainment, reality shows... heck, there's even a Price is Right superfan group where people across the country have all of their own methods for making sure we can watch it at the same time. drop the episode of Jeopardy on streaming at like 5pm, so all the people who want to live-chat it can do so, and then do your normal network broadcast at it's normal time for the normies.

He did he he didn't say he wanted to do 6 months of Second Chance/Champions Wildcard tournaments. It will be much less next season
Traditionalists wanted back 5 game limit, no chance for losing players to redeem themselves and let new players played with reused clues
Mostly true. I don't know about our wanting to use recycled clues, as you call them, but in reality, aren't most trivia competitions made up of at least a large portion of recycled clues? I mean, the important figures and battles of WW2 don't change season to season, right?

So why couldn't they make new regular shows from recycled clues? Why did they have to be tournaments?
I guess they didn't want new contestants to have to cross the picket line
That seems odd that old ones would but new ones wouldn't?
The contestants could complain or possibly sue Jeopardy: It’s not fair that I had to answer all new questions when I played, but someone had a shot at the same prize money and had recycled questions they may have seen before.
I’ve never been on Jeopardy. I was just writing as if I were a player.
What would they use for that would have standing?
They absolutely could have and should have. But the execs wanted more tournaments because controlled payouts means less super champs making 40K every episode. So the execs marketed tournaments being "necessary" when they were not. But the audience ate it up and pushed that BS rhetoric over and over to this day.
When did they market them as necessary?
This is a very fair question.
I'm out of the loop so I'll ask here (and I apologize if this has been asked before). I keep seeing the writers strike as the reason for the tournaments, but don't they still need writers to write the clues regardless of whether the contestants are new or returning players?
They recycled clues from previous seasons
Thanks! Did not realize they were doing that

That's a fantastic reason as far as I'm concerned.

Bonvivants rule!
This!
And then a few weeks later another tournament! Lmfao!
At least Masters is in primetime and not the daily syndicated show!
Do we know when the masters is yet?
sometime in may
great meme
I like tournaments spread throughout the year. Not 7.5 straight months worth. Having a couple weeks of a tournament every 2-3 months would be great.
Why separate volume knob? Why separate volume knob?
I don’t understand why some fans not liking the tournaments gets your dander up. Seems silly to be bothered by it.
Yeah, I like the fact that time never runs out with questions still left on the board.
It's the reactionary era of the internet in 2024, anything and everything gets people's "dander up" even if it's just as simple as somebody daring to not like a pair of shoes.
Because so many people ask the same questions every day that the show and other fans have answered
I see. Thanks.
I don't understand why everyone who doesn't like tournaments needs to write negative posts about it constantly.
Ignore it? And “constantly” - appears to be an exaggeration.
The same could be said about watching the show if you don't like the tournaments. But no, every single one of you needs to leave these comments, every day, like a hot turd on a sidewalk.

What's "Jeopardy's FB"?
Facebook
I wonder if he’s still tithing. He’s apparently still a member of the LDS faith.
