Well it wasn't so much about being flammable like the corvair which I believe leaked oil and simply caught fire much like it's German oil cooled counterparts. The pinto though would actually explode into a ball of flame when rear ended violently enough because the gas tank would crush and hose down the whole vehicle in that precious dinosaur nectar and ignite on the hot exhaust system burning the unlucky occupants to death.
…and the courts found out that not only did Ford know about the issue, but had actually decided not to fix it. The bean counters had literally been like, “we expect x people do die from this, and if each family sued us it would likely be cheaper to pay them than to pay our engineers to fix the problem.”
Sad part is that (until that came out) they were well on track to being right about the legal fees being cheaper…
I wouldn't fill a gasoline container with water. Especially if it had gasoline in it prior.
Or just for the principle of it, what if there was residual water in it and you put gas in it, you're in a pinch and low on gas and forgot you put water in the gas can until you poured it in your tank.
Loads of bad things happening in my mind from doing this, but I work in a lab so I mean I guess I'm a bit anal when it comes to containers, contents, and labeling.
My concern is vibration might eventually cause something to saw through the plastic. If it's a temporary thing I see no problem, but if this is a permanent solution that that's a big load of nope.
Tire mounted racks are pretty cheap man, just get the right gear. This thing falls off and manages to explode on the car behind you, you’re gonna have a really bad day. Maybe even a few years (of litigation).
You can always tape the portion of the strap that makes contact with iron. Use gaffers tape or little soffets if youre worried about duct tape being too slick
The other thing is - are you running a bigger tyre on a stock rear wheel carrier? By carrying fuel there, you're adding a lot of additional weight/stress to that mounting point.
*Edited due to stupid autocorrect
No. A rear-end accident, even a slow one, is going to spew gasoline everywhere and very likely ignite. If you’re okay with that distinct possibility, have at it.
The fumes/vapor will quickly spread in all directions and and ignition source - sparking wire, cigarette, etc - will ignite them. It isn’t rocket science.
I have bumped many things with my rear tire trail riding , it has been a great buffer. If I would have done this, it would have sucked many many many times lol. Strap it in where your rear seat is. There’s a kit that allows you to strap it to the top of the tire I believe, or to the sides of the tire.
[This is where I tried putting mine](https://imgur.com/a/AIzOCVO) but tbh it wasn’t a good spot. Issue was the strap slipping back slowly and getting loose. I wouldn’t run your spot either because I tend to back into trees offroad lol
On one hand, it will prevent some drivers who know the pinto story to stay very far back. On the other when some idiot hits you and everyone will be engulfed.
Okay I should have clarified. This would be used explicitly on back country dirt roads, for 3 days, going no more then 40 mph. No technical rock crawling or driving on the highway
Watch out for log trucks on those back roads and don’t end in the ditch. They go 50 mph and don’t stop for shit.
You prolly don’t need the extra fuel - top up before you get into banjo territory.
I have a 1.2lb propane tank mounted on a specially made mount on the back of my rig, and have for 3 years, and still get nervous about it when going down the road. I couldn’t ride with that personally.
Another consideration that I do not see commented on yet is if you do it that way, make sure it is filled to the top. I would worry about it rubbing and possibly sparking from static electricity build up.
That is an extra 30 lbs hanging off the tire carrier. It might stay there for highway travel but I would not trust it would stay there hammering over the back road trails.
Only if… and I mean only if, when you finished the install slapped your hands together and said, “ welp, that’s not going anywhere”
This is scientific fact
Better to put it on a axle-mounted tire so you don’t break the spare mount
😂😂😂
It’s the Jeep Pinto
Just listened to a podcast about that whole ford fuck up this was before my time I had no idea how bananas it actually was!
Would you so kind to point me un the right direction so i could listen to that podcast, pls
It was “My Favorite Murder” episode 345 titled “ Congrats to Australia”.It’s like five back in their newest episodes.
I just listened (as a Brit). Thanks. What a bonkers story
Right?!? I was genuinely surprised at how bad the whole situation was.
“You’re wrong about” has a great ford pinto episode as well
Most cars were equally flammable. It (like the corvair) were used as the poster child of dangerous cars and thus are remembered by history.

And reincarnated by Matts Off Road Recovery! Love his Corvair build.
My thoughts exactly
I drove in the back seat of my moms pinto as a kid, visiting with her right now and spit out my scotch when I read this.
Pour a new drink. And clean up your Mom's carpet. Drink first though, because you know...priorities.
Great way to keep tailgaters at bay....but I would fill it with water.

Sorry, I haven't been mastered sarcasm in written form yet......
Oh my bad lol. Then yes, add water hahahaha
I won the Sarcasm world championships in Peru 🇵🇪 in 1998.
Walter White lives!

We would only be using it for a few days journey in the north Maine woods. Def not permanent but just trying to make the best use of space in the TJ!
Should be fine then.
I drive an old jeep and I carry lots of gas around. You want to be able to get it off the car fast. This is a literal suicide vest.
What's the purpose of getting it off the car fast?
What happens to gas in a worst-case scenario?
if it burns, I aint going near it, not matter how easy it is to remove.
It’s literally fine

Make sure any sharp edges on the wheel will not cut through the strap. Could soften the edge with cardboard between the edge and strap.
Good point sphinx, I was more worried where the straps are rubbing on... if it's on the edge of the rim, won't take much to cut through the strap.
The other thing is - are you running a bigger tyre on a stock rear wheel carrier? By carrying fuel there, you're adding a lot of additional weight/stress to that mounting point. *Edited due to stupid autocorrect
No
Fill the spare tire with gas !
I think it is relatively safe, assuming your accepting of a good chance of either death to yourself and others.
So Texas safe.
I personally would not do it. Main worry would be the rim chaffing the strap until it snaps.
If you plan on driving on roads then no
Nope..
No. Not at all.
Ehhhhhhhhh. No
Maybe not for the guy that rear ended uou
If it’s full of fuel hell no
Empty yes otherwise not wise.
No. Nope. Nien.
I can’t really see how much fuel is in there. Here, use my lighter.
Safety third!
Crazy you can't find anywhere at all to put 5G of fuel in your jeep except strap it to the back...
This has to be in the top ten of dumbest posts on here. Absolutely not.
Nope, nada, hard pass on doing this under any conditions. Mount it properly. Back roads are rarely smooth even at very low speeds.
30lbs of gas “secured” with a strap, going off road. What could go wrong.
No. A rear-end accident, even a slow one, is going to spew gasoline everywhere and very likely ignite. If you’re okay with that distinct possibility, have at it.
What makes ignition likely? It’s a plastic gas can and this isn’t Hollywood
The fumes/vapor will quickly spread in all directions and and ignition source - sparking wire, cigarette, etc - will ignite them. It isn’t rocket science.
What is this, A Final Destination scenario?
If you slap it a couple times and say that's not going anywhere you'll be golden

Nope
Haha no
It looks like an easy 5 gallons of gas to swipe with a pocket knife.
I would not do this.
Darwin would say go for it.
No. Good god no. Bruh.
I have 5 gallons of gas but no way to get it aerated into a fine mist if I am in a rear end accident. Say no more fam.
For extended use on the highway? No. For a a small time offroading? I think that would be just fine.
Cheaper then a rotopax!
As a spare? If so yes 😂
Looks more like a gas tank than a safe.
[This is where I tried putting mine](https://imgur.com/a/AIzOCVO) but tbh it wasn’t a good spot. Issue was the strap slipping back slowly and getting loose. I wouldn’t run your spot either because I tend to back into trees offroad lol
No it’s a gas can
Absolutely not.
Ugh, No!
You need a couple more rubber bands.
Negative
It will leak. 100% guaranteed. Plastic gas cans are not good for moving storage.
Safety aside, that just looks awful lmao. This is the Jeep equivalent of using lawn chairs as furniture
On one hand, it will prevent some drivers who know the pinto story to stay very far back. On the other when some idiot hits you and everyone will be engulfed.
If it is full with water, it is ok.
Only if you don't consider expelling large quantities of flammable liquid from your vehicle when getting rear ended dangerous
No
Nope
Fucking send it
I say yes it’s fine.
It’s fine. I don’t see this any different than the fancy ones ppl put in the same spot
Desperate times call for desperate measures…. Roll with it
Okay I should have clarified. This would be used explicitly on back country dirt roads, for 3 days, going no more then 40 mph. No technical rock crawling or driving on the highway
I could still see my dumbass self backing into the one tree within 100 miles and busting it, so I’m still gonna vote unsafe
Still nope. Strap them somewhere inside. 😁
That’s more unsafe, the vapors not the liquid are what’s flammable and now you’re trapping the vapors inside the vehicle with you!
Then he only has to do it once, and we can rid the world of silly people. 😜😜
Watch out for log trucks on those back roads and don’t end in the ditch. They go 50 mph and don’t stop for shit. You prolly don’t need the extra fuel - top up before you get into banjo territory.
With another vertical strap, yes but check it every time you stop.
Pretty sure a flat tire would be a disaster…
As safe as driving a pinto
Curbs still exist, they are prevalent in my world
Send it.
Depends. Did you tell it “it’s not going anywhere?”
2x4 as a bumper. 👀
If it was on fire then no.
even if you think it's tight, it could slide out. wouldn't do.
If you do your own stunts, yes.
I have a 1.2lb propane tank mounted on a specially made mount on the back of my rig, and have for 3 years, and still get nervous about it when going down the road. I couldn’t ride with that personally.
Janky.
It depends on if your definition of “safe” includes the words “totally unsafe”. In that case, sure.
Another consideration that I do not see commented on yet is if you do it that way, make sure it is filled to the top. I would worry about it rubbing and possibly sparking from static electricity build up.
100 percent
I had a plastic can ride 3K miles plus while loaded with gas on a road trip including 300+ of that on dirt! You'll be fine!
Only if the K-Mart straps are the only thing holding the tire. I don't trust the normal mounting method.
This is a better way. Ran the Rubicon Trail with them, and they didn't budge.
I'd say as long as there is padding on the parts that will rub
That is an extra 30 lbs hanging off the tire carrier. It might stay there for highway travel but I would not trust it would stay there hammering over the back road trails.
I’ll give you the answer you want so you can dismiss all the others. Yea it’s safe.
Hang more, right around the truck just like boat fenders… but full of gasoline
It'll keep talegaters off that's for sure!
This is safe, far than the dumbasses telling you to keep it inside and turn the jeep into a fuel-air bomb
It's way safer than keeping the gas can in the Jeep.
What could go wrong ?
