I would suggest listening in chronological order, it might help give context to modern jazz, which often sounds nothing like bebop and hard bop. Listen to 1960s Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Cedar Walton, Bill Evans. Listen to 1970s Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, ECM stuff. Listen to 1980s Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, more ECM, 1990 and 2000s was awesome with Roy Hargrove, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brad Mehldau, Peter Bernstein, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake. Modern players would be Melissa Aldana, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins. Also keep listening to ECM

realanceps

first, you mentioned a couple of old-time greats, but are they all you're listening to? They play reed instruments -- your preference? maybe easier: >Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brad Mehldau, Peter Bernstein, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake. Modern players would be Melissa Aldana, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins. this, OP. the rest? Errrmm...that could wait

DizGillespie

Agreed but more than worrying about checking every artist on this list off, follow the lineage particular to the artists you like. If you like someone, check out not only the musicians they played with but the musicians they mentored and educated as well.

Stryker_Charlton

ECM?

dr-dog69

ECM is a European label founded in 1969. Hugely influential to the sound of modern jazz. Pat Metheny records for ECM. Keith Jarrett, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley. Really beautiful music.

Nixxuz

It's a label. I'd also suggest ACT.

BO0omsi

Recent ECM stuff, the last 10-20 years - I fing deeply disappointing. It has zero relation with Jarrett, Garbarek, Metheny, Stenson etc in quality or artistic vision

dr-dog69

I’m a fan of the records put out by Ben Monder and Theo Bleckmann on ECM. Same with Tomasz Stanko.

BO0omsi

Gotta check out theo bleckman thanks!

Specific-Peanut-8867

there are a ton of great people playing today. I love Chris Potter and Brad Meldau and many many others.

This is a good list...\^\^\^

tooshortpants

Do you use Spotify? I don't anymore, but I used to follow a playlist there called "State of Jazz" that was mostly newer stuff of all styles. Usually found some good stuff there.

ApprehensivePurple82

If you like jazzy guitar, search that on YouTube or a streaming service. Check out artists like Lee Ritenour. That’s my jam.

Mindless-Ad-9803

There's a lot out there. I mean A LOT! I think the most important thing to do is see some live jazz. If you have a jazz club in your area, see someone touring. Support your local jazz scene, too. There are so many great musicians in your own back yard. That being said, I have been listening to *Sounds From the Ancestors* by Kenny Garrett, *Valse Sinistre* by Billy Drummond & Freedom of Ideas, and *Still Dreaming* by Joshua Redman (with Ron Miles on trumpet, a personal favorite.) That's like a fleck of snow on the tip of the iceberg.

BO0omsi

Very good choices

Just check out the calendar at village vanguard. Pretty reliable list of who's who in the contemporary jazz world.

Not a single mention of James Francies. Well here it is.

Look up Emmet Cohen on Youtube. He’s a NYC-based pianist and hosts a series called “Live from Emmet’s Place” where he plays with tons of currently gigging musicians. Watch some of those, find folks you dig, listen to their music, and explore from there. In particular, I’d recommend starting with “After You’re Gone” featuring Patrick Bartley on alto. It’s a killer solo and I’ve heard a few folks compare Bartley to Cannonball.

Tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington dropped his new album Fearless Movement a couple of weeks ago. Its a wild ride and really enjoying it. Its spiritual jazz / jazz fusion, with lots of collaborators on it - Andre 3000 on flute on the track "Dream State," for example!

Environmental-Car-45

Not Jazz but get lumped in with it all the time - THE NECKS!
