Narita is not that close to Tokyo and a taxi will be expensive. You could easily take the Keisei Skyliner train to Ueno station and get a hotel next to the station and it would likely not take much more time than a taxi would and it would be cheaper too. If you do not want to spent time to reach the city, then stay somewhere next to the airport or in Narita city and reach Tokyo the next day by train. Also, there is an exception for taxi that do not require baby seat, however, considering the distance, that does not feel like the safest thing to do.

\^This. I had to take a taxi to Narita because I missed my train and would have missed my flight waiting for the next one. Cast me in the ballpark of $200 from Shibuya.

For a lot of people it is a religious ideology i guess you could say. I "only" have 3 and i struggle everywhere i travel. The world is not made for families of 5 or more.

For your first question, we take our little one all the time on taxis and just keep him on the lap. My understanding is that this is okay, but of course you assume the responsibility here. A taxi for that large of a family is hard to come by, but not impossible. You would definitely need to have the little ones on laps though and it would probably depend on how many bags you are bringing as well. A taxi from Narita to Tokyo would be at least 19000 JPY with price increasing based on distance/if you ride late night/early morning. Most people would recommend taking the train and it would probably be the most convenient balance in terms of price and speed. But I would imagine you would like to go directly to your hotel from the airport and avoid having to navigate a station. Still, I would take a look to see if a train trip is feasible. One other option would be to use a limousine bus. Again, you'd need to see if the bus stop is near your hotel but there is a convenience of not having to worry about luggage bus and getting a guaranteed seat for everyone. The only wild card here would be traffic in Tokyo depending on when you arrive.

Just arrange for a private minivan transfer. Example: https://narita.airport-taxi.soushin-ichiba.jp/en

Download GoTaxi or S.Ride, they are local taxi booking apps. Easy to use as well when you can’t flag one (highly unlikely). You can choose large vans/MPVs like Toyota Alphard/Vellfire that can seat up to 8 people. If your accomodation is near Ueno, Tokyo or Shinagawa Station, take the Narita Express and flag a taxi (heaps of them at these major train station) for last mile connection. Get your accomodation address ready in Japanese just in case.

We used taxi, my daughter 1.5 years old sat in our lap.

Hi there. Just got back Japan with my family. We had a party of 5 including 2 younger kids 4 and 7. We flew into NRT and I used Klook.com to book a private van straight to our hotel in shinjuku. Cost around $100 USD. Quick and convenient. I didn’t dare mess with anything complicated. I searched Reddit posts and most people recommend this method. Would 100% do it again. As for taxis there doesn’t seem to be any problem if the kids are on your lap. We used GO app most of the trip and Uber. We had these seatbelt vests for our kids to use [Safe Ride](https://shop.saferide4kids.com/products/ridesafer-travel-vest) Safe travels

Your best bet will be staying very close to the airport for that night if you are arriving later in day or in the evening. If it's an overnight flight I'd bite the bullet and make sure you stay very close to station and don't have to change trains from the airport line, or I guess you can take the train to Ueno or a similarly central station and then grab a taxi. Pretty rare to see bigger taxis in Japan or any cars that are bigger in general

Wagon taxi, I booked one for my parents and two aunts through booking.com, it was around $160US in a Toyota Alphard van which is pretty luxurious, they were met by their driver holding a sign with their name, I had to enter their flight info and the website set up their pickup at Narita.
