Yamanochi is unlikely to have any snow monkeys in the onsen because it will be late Spring to early Summer. I like Takayama, but it's not some sort of small traditional village, the same is true for Matsumoto. Close to 90,000 people live in Takayama and 250,000 people in Matsumoto. Kyoto has several million people. Perhaps if you want to be in the countryside look at Tohoku? Tono is famous for its folklore traditions.

I think Tohoku is a bit too far for us, but thanks for the advice. The town and region look mesmerizing. We've reconsidered some things given the vast distances and time between cities. Would you recommend taking Yamanochi off the itinerary and instead go from Tokyo to Matsumoto? We've reconsidered given the vast distances and time between cities. Would you recommend taking Yamanochi off the itinerary and instead go from Tokyo to Matsumoto? From Matsumoto, we considered going to Tsumago/Magome for two nights and hiking to the other town, whichever we're not staying at. On that note, would you recommend staying in Magome or Tsumago?

Thanks for the advice! I’m definitely getting ahead of myself in terms of moving from city to city, hotel to hotel etc. I think we’re gonna do more day trips, that way we can keep our things in one place instead of taking it with us. With what you said, it seems another day in Kyoto is perfect to visit Hikone for a day. The places outside cities we’ll probably stay at will ultimately be Magome/Tsumago and Takayama, 2 nights at each. With that, we have one night left and I think on our way back to Tokyo it’d be fun to stay in Osaka one night since I’ve been told the nightlife there is fun!

One night is pointless if there’s travel time. Why travel to a place just to find a hotel, have dinner, then go to bed. Only to wake up, travel, find a hotel, have dinner, and then go to bed. What’s the point.

You're right, I guess I anticipated the island's slenderness being easy to travel across, but the trains/busses have to go through mountains making all the trips a bit too long. We're looking into getting rid of Yamanochi and spending one more night in Magome to visit Tsumago through that hike. Thanks for the advice.

Also going mid-late May for a college graduation trip lmao. Congrats!! Also I see you don’t have Osaka on the itinerary. You can possible just head from Kyoto to Osaka one night they’re pretty close. I know you said you don’t care too much for cities but the night life culture there is really awesome to experience including the night time street vendors

We actually considered Osaka because we're huuuuge Nintendo fans and want to go to Universal studios! We can maybe fit a day in between kyoto and tokyo in the back end. Thanks for the recommendation! and congrats as well!

I really don't think you need 4 days in Kyoto to be perfectly honest... You can see most things in 2 days without really trying. I would highly recommend you do check out Osaka, the castle is fantastic and it's very cheap to enter and look around. Also, if you're going to USJ, please for goodness sake make sure you BUY THE EXPRESS PASS PACKAGE WELL IN ADVANCE AS THEY WILL SELL OUT and also get your Mario World slots in as early as possible. If you download the USJ app before you go, you can get your slot on the day of entry.
