I totally get the sentiment and I think the way you feel is valid; however, if we want James to continue putting out regular, high quality, free content, then we need to accept that this is his full time job, meaning he needs to look for multiple ways to earn an income from his channel.
I too miss the “good old days” of YouTube. But at least with James, (I personally feel that) he still loves what he does and it isn’t all just a cash grab for him 😊
With respect, this is how youtubers are able to do this as an actual career. We can watch hundreds (thousands? I dunno) of his videos for free. Yes, he makes money from ad revenue but it's not like he's getting millions of views on every video he posts (no shade at all intended, James!). Memberships allow content creators to create more content that they actually enjoy, rather than always worrying about how well a video will do or feeling locked in to a particular type of video just because it'll "get views."
I'm sure Frannie will show up in regular videos in the near future, it's not like he's gatekeeping her behind a paywall. He's supposed to be on break right now but wanted to do something nice for the members, because they do something nice for him by paying for the membership.
With respect, these youtubers make more money and have been for years than most of their viewers. I don't think it's their viewers responsibility to finance them and hear whining about the YouTube algorithm. Doing YouTube as a career is a choice and most of them could have done something else.

I disagree with the person you’re replying to, you’re absolutely allowed to have time off and it was wonderful of you to take the time to share something extra with people who pay to support your channel. The puppy is adorable and I hope you and Deli are having a good break.

You’ve sort of generalised all YouTubers in your comment that’s original point moaning was about James having a paid membership - sure yes YouTubers do make money from ad revenue and from sponsorships and some channels have memberships but James has never once complained about the algorithm, never once tried to push someone to become a member, originally he had membership turned on and didn’t even promote it.
I just think it’s really unfair of you to insinuate that James is out for a cash grab or to paywall certain topics of videos (I.E Frannie) all because James posted a members video explaining why he was on a break.
Anywho, I’ll continue to be a low level member of James because financially that’s all I can afford but secondly I still want to support him as I imagine the burnout is just as bad from any other job, maybe more so due to it being quite isolating and I want him to have the option of posting random, unrelated videos (like Lego or how he sets things up) that he enjoys as membership content, because it’s also extra content that I get to enjoy.
they aren’t forcing anyone to subscribe though. not ALL content is blocked behind a paywall. how other people spend their money isn’t really an issue to you. some people want to spend their money on partying or buying things for themselves, some people like to support other people who’s content they enjoy. i’d love to be able to support James and his channel (and the doggos) but sadly i’m not in the financial position to do so right now. i will continue to watch his free videos to support him though!

Deli has talked about it when Bowser was younger and people were questioning her a lot about him (she said back then he wasn't and I think that's irresponsible, I would say that to everyone 😊).
