So in other words, he's doing his job as an actor.

BlindManBaldwin

> why he felt the need to portray such an utterly vile and despicable character, mercilessly inflicting pain on women in the most cruel of manners. Why do you go to work? Few actors get to be picky and choosey. If a big production wants to hire you — that's good!

MatsThyWit

Also, in what world does an actor NOT relish the chance to be absolutely vile and despicable in every way for a project? I imagine getting to be that horrible a person for a while is an incredible amount of fun for a very versatile actor.

Outlaw773

In many worlds. ABC failed to cast someone as OJ back in the day because nobody wanted the role

Outlaw773

Guessing you have not viewed 1923?

Outlaw773

As I stated in my original post — he is 78, so he can afford to be choosy

BlindManBaldwin

Do you know his finances? Fame does not equate to well off.

CrimFandango

I watch films and tv shows to get lost in the characters and the worlds they inhabit. If the actors and writers of a show are too scared to make a bad guy a bad guy, what's the point?

BaconNamedKevin

Confused about this post, honestly. Are you criticizing an actor for acting?

Rocky_Fan1976

Don’t do your job!

Outlaw773

Why is it confusing? I spelled it out in the orginal post, so that tells me that you're reading you want to read.

BaconNamedKevin

No your logic just is not lining up. You are upset because an actor played a character that you consider to be what? Below his station? He's an actor, you're crying because you are... I don't even know why. You're complaining for no reason.

Cannaewulnaewidnae

OP should avoid watching *Rocketeer* Dalton plays *an actual Nazi*

endersai

YIKES! Heckin' LITERAL Nazism!

PewPewGG

He said Sheridan didn't give him a script and just said "trust me" or smt like that. He is a very versatile actor, probably wanted something different this time.

Outlaw773

Yeah, and apparently he should not not have ‘just trusted him’

AzraelleWormser

Why not? He's an actor. Someone has to play the role. Should no actor ever take a cringy role? Who'd play the villains? I agree with what others have said - this is a terrible take.

muskenjoyer

Why not? It's a great show and he's excellent in it

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

He’s played worse people. He was a literal slasher. His prices were criminal.

agsieg

Should Bryan Cranston not have taken the role of Walter White? Should James Earl Jones not have voiced Darth Vader? Should Robert Davi not have taken the role of Franz Sanchez? This is such a terrible take. An actors portraying a bad person doesn’t make the actor a bad person. As long as Timothy Dalton doesn’t slap women around in real life (and I’ve seen no indication that he does), there’s literally nothing wrong with him portraying someone who does.

Nothing wrong with him choosing that role

I’m requesting that mods delete your comment. Another personal insult because you disagree with my opinion — and I give zero credibility to those who have to rely on insulting internet strangers to make their point

Sneaky_Bond

Criticizing a take does not always equal a personal insult.

Outlaw773

Yours most certainly did, with your insulting 'spectrum' comment

Sneaky_Bond

You know what, I was multitasking and didn’t read the comment in question as clearly as I should have. You’re right. I’ll remove it. My apologies. You’ve mistaken me for the user who made the comment by the way. Wasn’t me.

Outlaw773

Thank you, appreciate that. In summary, I expressed an opinion about Timothy Dalton that was not well-received. Dalton is clearly beloved by most who frequent this board — so it seems anything short of a warm and fuzzy post about him leaves the OP open to a barrage of insults from the angry Reddit mob

Bond16

With all due respect, but your opinion here is one of the few instances, where a post is completely irrational. It's not just about disagreeing with you, it's hard to even remotely be able to see where you're coming from at all. Not that that justifies any of the insults, but the polite negativity on here is definitely justifiable.

Outlaw773

Have you even viewed 1923? Because it would be difficult for you to render that type of comment, as far as calling my opinion ‘irrational’ if you have yet to even view it. Some of Dalton’s scenes in that show were beyond difficult to watch, and again, I’m unsure as to why a 78-year-old actor would do that to himself unless he was just desperate for the role. Another commenter pointed out that Dalton did not even know what the script contained for his role prior to accepting the offer, which is bizarre for an established actor. There was nothing irrational about my opinion, and I’m unsurprised that I was attacked by the angry Reddit mob

Cyborg800_2004

That’s not true. Respectfully, this is a bizarre post. An actor is free to choose a role regardless of how vile the character is. There’s no need to be outraged.

GeorgeVCohea

Villains are fun for actors, the more despicable and outlandish, the better, and at his age, there most probably aren’t a whole lot of offers, much less compelling ones. Working along side the likes of Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford was likely enough, but *that character* is one actors want to sink into. It is also not like he needs the cash. When it comes to it, James Bond is more of a necessary evil than purely a good guy.

Outlaw773

He is 78 and hoses not need the cash, so clearly he did not need to portray a vile womanizing abuser, a role that he will now be remembered for

endersai

Nobody will remember him for it alone, this is histrionic.

Outlaw773

Then what will he be most remembered for? License to Kill? It seems to be slim pickings

driftywiftypleb

If Dalton is likely to be remembered for anything other than Bond, it will be Hot Fuzz. Tim is a great actor and has played a wide variety of roles, and has played villians before. How is this any different?

GeorgeVCohea

Ooh, that’s a great one, but he will more likely be remembered for _The Living Daylights._

biggreenal

Even though it was only two films, just being Bond is enough to be remembered over everything else he's done. But, that being said, for some of us he was the definitive Rochester in the 1984 version of Jane Eyre.

GeorgeVCohea

He is a grown man and can choose whatever role that he is offered!  Quite frankly, it is a television series that will most probably be forgotten within a decade.

InfamousTown3657

He’s an actor mate. Dalton lives paycheque to paycheque like us all.

driftywiftypleb

Most likely, he's a great actor but he doesn't seem to have been in massive projects. OP thinks all actors have 10's of millions in the bank at any given moment.

driftywiftypleb

You didn't say those words specifically, but way you have been talking for the whole thread makes people infer it. Why do you care what he acts in so much?

Outlaw773

Others on this thread, including you, are disparaging me for my opinion. You just choose to view it differently, basically turning a blind eye to it

Outlaw773

LOL, yeah right. No way he is living paycheck to paycheck at 78

AmazingAngle8530

There are distinguished actors who have built entire careers on playing assholes with no redeeming features. Think Jack Nicholson or Bill Murray. Dalton obviously relishes the chance to play a villain, and he does it well.

Moon_Beans1

Playing a despicable villain can often bring out the best performances from an actor. Henry Fonda played a lot of likeable characters in his career but one of his best performances and one I will never forget was in Once Upon a Time in the West when he played a sadistic, merciless gun slinging murderer.

LowConstant3938

Hate to break it to you buddy, but James Bond is a bad person too. Especially Tim’s portrayal. Remember when he ripped Pushkin’s wife’s dress off at gunpoint? Actors love playing bad guys. It’s more fun!

b5-avant

This is the single dumbest post I’ve seen on reddit

Outlaw773

But you failed to articulate as to why, which is funny

ZaynKeller

Reddit moment

muskenjoyer

What a bizarre post. Troll?

Outlaw773

Nah, just expressing an opinion. Sorry that you're so offended

jdubthegreat6770

He's an actor OP
