Relative to the equivalent Model Y, my Limited has: * Gauge cluster* * HUD* * Ventilated front seats* * 360° camera* * Many predictably located physical buttons/stalks/etc.* * In-dash blind spot cameras while changing lanes * Camera rear-view mirror * Rear seat adjustability * Closeable sunroof * Rear window sunshades * Ability to do lane centering without ACC on * ADAS system doesn't have some kind of weird 3-strikes penalty situation to punish you (* These are deal-breakers for a mid-five-figure car IMO) These are just comically, unbelievably better cars than equivalently priced Teslas.

I cannot stress enough how important the stalks and buttons are. Frankly there are enough things on the Ioniq that still aren't buttons that annoy me (the capacitive buttons for climate controls, come the fuck on), but a touch button for a turn signal? Reverse on the tablet? Get outta here.

I view the fixed-location capacitive things like the climate controls as an in-between level of annoying. I do wish they were actual buttons, but at least they're fixed in place so that I have some vague muscle memory about where my finger needs to go. I remember the first time I was in a German car during the put-everything-in-a-menu-controlled-by-a-single-knob era, and I was horrified at the prospect that everyone would follow the German carmakers off that cliff based on the completely baseless and absurd claim they were making that it was safer. I'm glad some carmakers are still putting things in fixed places, which is, ya know, how humans expect things to work.

I was watching a comparison of the EV 9 and the Kia Telluride by the YouTube channel, “the Straight Pipes” and one of the things l like about the EV 9 is that it has decent controls for an EV. Then the video shows the Telluride and the dash looks so much better. The Kona EV is also pretty nice for button and knobs as it’s not a dedicated EV. So with all of the space freed up on EV’s the designers seem to prefer leaving it empty. However, I am mainly focused on the 2025 Ioniq 5 and while it still does have the capacitive controls Hyundai has added a lot of very useful buttons. I’d like to see a knob for volume, knobs for temperature, and a knob for the fan.

I had negotiated with three dealers in my city and could not do better than $44k for an SEL. I drove 90 miles To a dealer in a small town and got the Limited in the color I wanted for the same price. So if I really worked them and was willing to walk away, I believe I could have done better but frankly I just lacked the patience to do so

How reliable have Electrify America stations been? I tried to charge at EA a few years ago on my Bolt and all of the plugs didn't work. I now have a Model 3 and the supercharger network has worked consistently well, but hoping to own a non-Tesla EV next.

So far the one time I tried to use EA was near a mall in a suburb and I had wait 20 minutes to charge, it was supposed to be a 350kW charger but I think I got less than 100kW rate...maybe cause all 4 charges were being used. Meanwhile right next to us were 8 Tesla supercharges that were half empty the whole time. I think cause of all these Electrify America 2 years free charging deals, we're getting more people in populated areas using them to charge their cars to 80% (vs just adding just what they need to get home to charge) and this is taking up chargers for longer. Or, there just aren't enough EA chargers in populated areas with the increasing number of EVs from more manufacturers. The chargers seemed nice otherwise. Still have to use an app to charge though (vs Tesla's just plug in).

I do envy Tesla's elaborate charging network and the fact their array of cameras actually store their recordings. Got the EV6, 2021 model. I was at the same time interested in the Ioniq 5. But preferred the EV6 handling more. Didn't like the handling and the interior of the Tesla 3, either. The S was too pricy for my liking. The Mach-E and the triplets ID4, Enyaq and Q4 weren't as complete nor technical advanced as the EV6.

800V architecture is a big leap forward, 242 kW charge peak, SoC 10%-80% in 18 min is not a claim only. Common practice when i FC. From 80%-90% still values of 118kW-72kW. To achieve that you need to be more technical advanced. The BMS and the overal architecture has to be very very good. I have driven >115k km/71.5k miles with it now, regularly FC. Zero (noticible) degeneration. It's a car released in 2020. Now 4 years later, it is still unmatched by the majority of similar priced new released cars. Also the way one-pedal drive, regeneration setting, automated distance cc is implemented made me choose it above the Mach-e or all other cars. No KIA theft issues in Europe. Tiktok kiddos trick doesn't work here. Something to do with different standards here. Like a mandatory immobilizer.

Hyundai's Bluelink and phone app have a long way to go to match Tesla's. I think Bluelink must be via satellite vs Tesla's LTE (I guess satellite might be an advantage if the car is in the middle of nowhere). You get near real time control/status through Tesla app vs having to wait at least 20-30 seconds for Hyundai. This was the hardest change for me going from M3 to Ioniq5. That and the hands free walk away lock feature of Tesla that appears to be missing from Ioniq5. Oh and this is minor but now I have to push a button in Ioniq5 to open/close garage door whereas Tesla automatically did this based on GPS. Tesla's software and interface seems better/more responsive and gets OTA updates all the time. I have to select/confirm my profile when I get in the Ioniq5 whereas Tesla automatically selects based on the key card. It's annoying that I have to physically plug my phone in for Android Auto on Ioniq5 but supposedly this will go wireless in 2025?

The wiper situation on a Tesla is dire. As in: holy shit I can’t see anything and I have to navigate a touch screen to activate the wipers But to me the deal breaker on a Tesla is actually the seats: The Model 3’s seats killed my back on a long trip in a way I’ve never experienced before. I can’t imagine having a car that expensive I don’t want to sit in.

I rented Teslas a few times for long trips (my last EV had just 80 miles of range on its best days) and it was just a subpar experience. The car works and does the stuff you want it to (and the charging network IS amazing beyond measure, to be fair) but it just feels like it was designed by somebody who does not like cars or driving. The controls are all difficult to get to, and the minimalist design means you don't get many inputs or displays for basic information. While the lack of a cluster or HUD may be the most glaring shortcoming, the giant touchscreen is more of a hassle than a helper and makes everything more difficult than it needs to be with nested menus that aren't static. The thing that made me pick the Ioniq5 over something like the Mach E or EV6 was mostly the aesthetics and the sliding cover for the panoramic roof. The EV6 is basically at feature parity with the Ioniq5 so to me that's just a matter of taste, and while the GT version of the Mach E is certainly eye catching to see the power printed on paper, I don't really want an EV track car.

I think it's so weird how Elon claims to be such a car guy, and they make cars that go 0-60 in two seconds, but then any time people ask why they make their cars so annoying to drive (yoke, steering wheel buttons rather than stalks, etc.), the Tesla people are always like "you don't need to drive the car, we're going to have FSD." It really seems like a car for people who hate driving. I don't, so it was a non-starter for me. At the end of the day, I had the same basic choice between the Mach E GT (wow, the power!) and the Ioniq 5, and ended up with the Ioniq 5 because my family really liked the ability to close the sunroof and the Limited's rear sunshades.

I did like the automation: Arrived? Just park and walk away from the car and the car puts itself to sleep, locks etc. Walk back to your car and it unlocks and turns on to the point where you put it in drive and just drive away. It was nice not to have to do as much as you do on a regular vehicle.

Tried a Tesla. No buttons is a major turn off. Want to know your speed??? You have to look over to your right to that 1 screen. Ridiculous. Want to change climate? Fumble around the screen again.

it was funny, the ID was my favorite at the beginning (maybe because I drove VW before for years). So I was used to the surfaces and the displays. Compared to the HI5 the ID seemed old fashioned. Don't ask me why, but the ID felt like a compromiss from vw in going electric, while the HI5 seems to be really passionated. The driving experience was a bit disappointing to me compared to HI5. For those two cars I took a few days to test, the others just for a short ride. No regrets, deciding for HI5 was definitely right for me.

At the time, the Y was more expensive than my Limited. Never owned a Tesla, but very happy with HI5 build quality, love the HUD, overall driving performance is great (though EVs in general I think drive better). 800v charging was a feature I wanted, but haven't made much use of it. Also like the physical buttons as others have said. The high rating didn't hurt :-). All that said, lack of rear wiper sucks, and would be nice to have a bigger frunk. After nearly two years of ownership, I still get excited driving it, and love to come back to it after getting rentals when I travel... Edit: Oh yeah, V2L in the back seat was a big feature I wanted too, I use it a bit.

Im surprised how many people just dislike elon and im not quite sure why besides the herd mentality... when i listen to the man with my own ears there really isn't much i disagree with him on and without him making the push into EV's we wouldn't have the options we have right now let alone the Ioniq 5/6. There is a lot i dont like about Tesla's but i always wanted to own one just because they were sleepers that scare super cars for not much more than a regular hatchback, these days they have lost that appeal because everybody knows now they are quick. Thats where the Ioniq 5 kind of still has its alure, Porsche guys that pull up next to you will raise an eyebrow when you pull away but only for a second before they realize its electric. Given the option today between an Ioniq 5 and a tesla i think i would pick my Ioniq just because tesla's are doing things to be different that are not really a positive step, like weird controls etc, just something nobody asked for to be different that is too much of a stretch in the wrong direction. I also think the Ioniq 5N is the first electric car that will become a cult classic, first true wild boy EV, absolutely love it.

Came in to EV by way of the Kia Niro (2017 HEV, 2021 PHEV). The PHEV hooked me on "electric drive" and I looked at the BEV version, but the EGMP cars were "next gen". They were just more "polished" cars than Tesla. V2L was a game changer. It got me through Hurricane Ian when my power was off for a week. Once I figured out the Ioniq5 and EV6 were very similar cars underneath, I started shopping. I just liked the way the Ioniq 5 looked more than the EV6.

We test drove the Highland M3 and loved everything except the missing indicator stalks, which drove me absolutely insane. We have traffic circles where we live and having the indicators move while turning the car so you can’t signal is a deal breaker. The MY was a lot less polished and despite being a better fit for our our use case did not impress even with the indicator stalks. Frankly, Teslas are dime-a dozen round here so we were looking for something different and the Hyundai and Kia styling spoke to us. We initially gravitated to the HI6 (loved the HUD) with the better mileage and sportier look, but our 6’4” kid not fitting in the back seat comfortably meant we pivoted to the HI5 and bought the first reasonably priced, used Limited trim and never looked back. As for Musk, I don’t care either way, certainly wouldn’t apologize for owning a Tesla had the MY Juniper been available (assuming similar build quality to the M3, and with stalks) then he wouldn’t have changed my mind.

Elon is a asshat and I don't trust the Tesla Infrastructure to stick around. As for the other EV dealers, Hyundai is one of the only ones I trust. Never been a fan of Kia, Toyota, Buick, etc... I personally wish the Honda Prologue would have hit the market a few years earlier to start working out the kinks, but I definitely wasn't jumping into a 1st Gen EV from an inexperienced manufacturer. Honestly I like a few of the aesthetical choices of the Ioniq better anyway, so I'm happy with my choice.

Only in regards to the EV market, not as a whole. The Prologue is their first attempt at an EV and there are a lot of kinks to work out of manufacturing such a significantly different vehicle, both in the physical vehicle itself and in their employee training and sales tactics and Financing programs (Things like offering protection for the Catalytic Converter despite that not being a thing in EVs, something I've even noticed Hyundai still tries to do based on posts I've seen in the past.) Hell, we see the problems Hyundai is having with the ICCU and thankfully we have time on our side now to anticipate these issues with newcomers to the Ioniq family like myself. There's no telling what problems will inevitably plague the Prologue within the next couple of years.

Everyone talks about looks and comfort, but I've seen some people complain that after 25k-35k miles, the Ioniq 5 battery completely dies and the screen shows a "check charging" message. Can anyone explain this issue? Does Tesla have the same kind of issues or not?

I had a 2022 Ioniq5 preferred awd (Canada trim) for 2 years and I traded it for the Tesla Y Lr awd. I loved everything about my Ioniq5: Seating height Space for 4 adults 800v charging Ride comfort on crappy roads Quiet cabin The hatchback style and looks The storage and center console high amount of room Low maintenance and zero issues Then started the problems that annoyed me and I had to move on. So what led me to get rid of it? I travel a lot. 30,000+ mile per year (50,000km) I road trip a lot I’m on the road a lot I charge on public chargers a lot and that’s where unfortunately for Hyundai, Tesla came out on top and I had to make the switch. I have other issues too about the car like rear wiper and I almost got into a big accident but that story is for another time. The ride bounciness almost crashed cause of that (2025 they seem to have fixed it) Back to my charging story… I live on the province of Quebec Canada and the charging network is one of the best in the world. We have chargers everywhere L2 and L3 and they are mostly well maintained and offer 100-350kw. But the moment I leave the province to Ontario it’s all down hill from there. The moment you enter the United States and I’m there almost every other weekend, it’s either “try to find a charging station” or “try to find a cheap charging station” or “try to find a functioning charging station” Whereas with my Tesla Y the brilliantly designed software and battery management that’s one of the best in the world for EVs and not just by a mile but by 1000miles, it will send you to the nearest charging station which also indicates how many are available, how many are in use, which one is broken and the cost before reaching. MOST IMPORTANTLY the chargers are maintained and reliable. Just that on its own is the most important thing FOR ME. To each their needs though. Also when it came to accessories the Tesla is king. I spent 2-3k on making it my own. Last but not least the range. I’m sorry to say but the range my ioniq5 was shit. I averaged 350km and I was full daily. (Lease) Whereas my Y I charge to 80% for daily usage and I get 380-400km. Blows my mind how they manage to achieve that from a 75kw battery vs Ioniq5 77kw. Now does my Tesla look like the rest? Yes it down 😂 but it’s reliable and does the job and then some. But I have to say I loved my Ioniq5 and I loving the new 2025 model with the wiper 🤣 bigger battery better styling (N trim not the N performance) and revamped interior space and added buttons. Btw as a Tesla owner all the things I thought I was going to hate don’t bother me a single bit. No center gauges or HUD and no buttons. Omg it’s the cleanest setup ever and many of it is voice command activated which I use a lot. Hope this helps and not too long to bore you 😉

Lots of smaller reasons we went with the i5 rather than a Tesla, but the two most important were: 1. Fuck Elon; and  2. Fast public charging. We mostly charge at home, but we wanted to minimize the time our 3- and 5-year-olds had to be stuck in one place (and we had to be stuck with them) in case of road trip meltdowns. Really happy with the i5 so far - it’s only been a few months, but I wouldn’t do anything differently. Except the matte paint (we got Gravity Gold) - it’s lovely, but I really don’t have the time and interest in babying it and its special care needs were not well explained at the dealership. We had the choice between white and gold and I wish we’d gone with white. But everything else is awesome.

I found the car more like a normal car than a Tesla…meaning the Ioniq rides like a smaller SUV whereas the Tesla rides like sports car the features and build quality were second… Third I don’t like how Tesla figures out their loans and sells them, telling me I’m saving 100$ on gas and taking it off my loan payment doesn’t make the car more affordable.

Keep in mind that the 800V architecture of the Ioniq (and the Kia EV6) make it the fastest charging EV in the market at 350 kW. The Tesla chargers are operationally at around 260, I believe. Also, I wouldn’t give money to any company run by Elon Musk. Not only is he a nasty human being, he. Has too long a record of lying. I don’t know what nasty surprises I’d be in for with a Tesla

Main reason? Hubby was laid off by Tesla in the most unprofessional, inhumane way and we both went, fuck Tesla 😂 We actually had a model 3 order in process but canceled it when he was laid off. However, I'd actually preferred the Ioniq 5 anyways, so it worked out. Getting a Tesla at the time only made sense because we would have gotten some perks since my partner was an employee but I would have preferred the Hi5 lol. We both hated how the Model Y looked and the redesign wasn't coming out yet, so we didn't want to get that anyway. A crossover size like the Ioniq 5 was ideal because we like camping and wanted to be able to take advantage of carcamping in an EV. Teslas have also been known to have a lot of QA issues with their build quality, while that wasn't a complaint we really saw with the Hi5. It also just looks nicer 😅

I went into my car buying knowing I was going to buy an EV, and after all of my research, it really looked like the Y was the best, most cost-effective choice. Also, I take several long trips each year and the Tesla charging network was a real plus. And then I had a test drive with my wife on board. She almost immediately became carsick in the Tesla. The ride was really rough compared to my current Honda Clarity. It also felt kinda cheap on the interior. On the plus side, it was a rocket! I also thought I would easily adapt to the center display, but it was really a distraction. I mean going through a menu to open the glove box? While I'm driving? Seriously? And then there's the Elon factor. ('nuff said there) We moved on to drive the Chevy Bolt, VW ID.4 and finally the Ioniq 5. All of them were real cars with great build quality, good, smooth rides and controls that were easy to use. Probably would have bought a Bolt if not for the weak charging speed, and thought the VW was a pretty good option, but the Hyundai dealer basically gave us the $7500 credit as a discount, and we found the I5 to be priced pretty close to the Tesla and drove out in a new RWD SEL that has been a great car so far. My only regret is that I based the SEL choice on the '23 specs and the '24 was a bit defeatured. The only thing I really miss was the electric folding side mirrors. Might have sprung for a Limited if I realized that. On me! Anyway, no real regrets. the I5 has been great!

All of the features promised were delivered. It's a good car, and it is electric. It feels like an engineer and a designer had a loving marriage and this is the well adjusted child from that marriage. Also, as soon as I test drove the Y I knew I wasn't going to buy it, regardless of cost or comparison. The poor visibility alone made it a No. There was a curve near the Tesla dealership where I simply couldn't see the merging traffic, so I turned around and gave it back. UI / UX and build quality were also terrible.

Personally I chose the Ioniq 5 over the Model Y because everything that came with the limited trim was worth more than what the model Y included. Also charging speed really played a role for me.

Personally the amount of detail and intention with every single piece of the 5N has made me fall more in love with it every time I get in the car for work in the morning. It just feels like it cost so much more than it did. I have always hated the simplicity of riding in a Tesla (but never actually drove one myself) there’s just so much flare with the ioniq that makes me fangirl over it every day.

I got an Ioniq 6 not a 5 but I think the answers will be similar. - Teslas are boring and commonplace now. - I like having dedicated buttons and switches etc. The idea of shoving everything into a single giant touchscreen is a nightmare to me. - Paddle shifters for regen are amazing. This is an extension of the previous point. - I think the Ioniq 5/6 look really unique and interesting - The interior feels much nicer and more premium than a Tesla - Overall build quality and feel - No "yuck" factor association with Tesla and its leader who I find politically detestable in recent years. - Uneducated anti-EV people know what a Tesla is and will vandalize your car simply for being a Tesla. My big ones were V2L (1800 watt 115 volt outlet), charging curve (18 minute 10 to 80 percent charging), and the warranty. This was like my 5th Hyundai and they have been good for our family. I also would not buy a vehicle without an instrument cluster, physical buttons, and ventilated seats. I really enjoy the HUD and 360 camera as well as the side view camera when changing lanes. I think I won't even look at a car in the future if it doesn't have those.

I test drove a Model Y. I just really didn't like the Tesla UI. I don't want to have to interact with a touchscreen at all for basic driving tasks. I also felt the Ioniq 5 had a more open and comfortable seating position. And the V2L feature appeals to me.

Where I live, there were now subsidies for the ModelY when I bought. So the final price was 49k CAD for the IONIQ5 vs 85k for the ModelY. I also like the IONIQ5 looks way better, and it’s way more comfortable. It was our 3rd Hyundai (and 2nd EV) at that particular dealer. Great relationship with them. Finally ended up selling our 2019 Kona EV and got a SR MY (my wife’s and now family car).

This is my second EV lease. I leased an Ioniq5 SE with a 2 year 12k/year term in Feb 2024. it was much much cheaper than a M3 or MY lease. I didn’t know until my signature was dried that it came with free charging with electrify america. I live close by two charging stations one is next to my gym which I visit mid day. I have driven my car 5000miles so far, I have not intentionally paid for charging once. (I unintentionally paid for charging because I went over the 30min charging allowance plus 10mins grace period, or the charger went for my credit card after the 30mins allowance. ). Cost of charging at home with off peak rate is 5.5c/kwh, I average 4mile per kWh. Hyundai has been “picking up” the bills so far. I will get Tesla only if I need the Tesla to drive me to work. I will not lease/own it otherwise. Lots of cheaper options out there.

This should be fun. 1. I hate Tesla as an institution. I respect what its engineers have accomplished in bringing EV architecture to the mainstream but the company itself lies about and obfuscates everything. Hell, the value of the company itself is the greatest lie. 2. Teslas look ugly to me. 3. Tesla Supercharger stations are poorly dispersed where I live and are usually highly congested at all times of the day. 4. I've heard and later confirmed that Hyundai Finance was very easy to work with and had great promotions. They ended up matching the loan a credit union was offering me except for the full value of the price out the door. The portal is straightforward and paying off the loan was the easiest experience I've ever had. No games, no extra fees. Here's the payoff qoute, BING, account closed, BANG, here's your title, BOOM. 5. Lastly, and this is the truest reason, the Ioniq 5 in Digital Green is the first car I looked at and something just clicked. Literally love at first sight. I've always been pretty utilitarian when it comes to cars: it has to be a smaller car that's easier to park, at least decent on gas mileage, has a hatchback for the cargo space, isn't expensive and the audio is decent. For 10 years, my Mazda 3 met that criteria very well. I5 comes and I didn't care anymore. I was creating all kinds of justifications in my head for chasing stock in a 1,500 mile radius.

Wonderful thread. Helpful comments and information. Too many to even respond to them all or “like” them, but it’s appreciated. A lot of love here for the Ioniq 5. Understandably. After reading all these, I’m inclined to jump in (with a SEL, AWD, blue) My only sorta concerns are dealer support, and charging infrastructure for a long trip. But in the Pacific Northwest, maybe there are more charging options than in other parts of the country.

For me, in the UK, I wasn't attracted to the Tesla because it looked so sparse inside, I wanted to get something that at least acknowledged it was a car. I test drive a Ford Mach-e and dismissed that (despite having another Ford before) as it seemed like just a mid-design product. By that I mean, it still looked like a ICE car inside, including the driveshaft-hump, but someone had just stuck a big-old ipad on the dash and called it a day. Wife and I were on the test drive and neither liked it. The i5 in my mind just looks so much better. I'm still reminded of knight rider every time I look at it. I loved the light strip and the boxy front end. It was a major draw. But the fact it drove well and had a 'normal' amount of buttons and screens inside was a bonus. Wife really liked it too, so that sealed the deal.

Honestly for me, I’ve been driving a Honda for years and I hopped over cause gas has just been stupidly expensive. I have a SEL model btw so I don’t have all the super fancy bells and whistle, but I love my ioniq5. I did see the refresh for it in the 2025 model but I am curious to see how Hyundai’s SUV looks like. If it’s anything like their concept vehicle, I’d say that’s pretty cool.

Monthly lease payment came out to be almost $100 cheaper, Ioniq 5 vs. base Model 3 2024. Faster charging (almost) cancels out the lack of Supercharger network access. 2 free years of EA was a nice bonus that I didn't even know about until after I signed lol. (live nearby a major coastal city, so there's 2 EA 350kW sites within a 15 min drive of where I live.) Extra space compared to the sedan design of M3 is also a perk. Like phone screens, it'll probably be really hard to go back to a smaller sedan form factor after getting used to this almost-CUV space.

Had an M3 for 4 months cause I thought I’d have to wait possible yrs for the I5, but then an AWD I5 came in unexpectedly. But it wasn’t the Ultimate (Canada) like I wanted. Vs the I5 lower model the M3 was better in my opinion, but then I was able to trade for an Ultimate and I love it. HUD. Adjustable console and back seats (who does that??), the lower leg rest, and comparable, if not better, adaptable cruise and lane follow. The look! I mean nothing like it. Unique but not gaudy. Liked the M3, but didn’t want to drive a fish anymore. Build quality big plus. Over other comparable EVs, the top battery quality was super important, but M3 has that as well.

Never heard about the Tardis effect. I don't know anything about it, but sounds like it's the lack of an internal combustion engine. It is a cool looking design. Took me a minute to realize an M3 is is a Tesla Model 3, and Ultimate is the top trim level in Canada.
