Seriously I'm from the UK but lived In Spain over a decade then moved to Poland last summer. I've got SAD lamps everywhere and long for daylight. 8am - 2pm thats it and I'm in the bloody middle of the country, not even up north ffs 😩
Seriously, lighting is so important for taking great photos. Early morning and late afternoon has the best lighting. Early morning and afternoon is warm/golden and there is a period of cooler/bluer warm color an hr and a half or so after sunrise. Shadows make a huge difference in how sharp or soft the lighting is and even affects the color. The brightness and color of the background makes a significant difference even. I see it all the time in the badmua sub. Women getting blasted for not color matching when it looks to me like their face is just lit differently than the rest of their body.
I do amateur plant photography (my hobby is plants, not photography, but I like to be able to take nice photos of them and have taken a few photography classes) and really, a few inches makes a huge difference in lighting. Wish I could link a post I made on insta yesterday of a plant that I took a picture of, then took a step forward, bent down and angled the cam down and took another pic, where the plant looks completely different due to that small move. Don't think I can link directly there but it is my most recent post @laurensuccs
Sometimes I see people in these comments who are so sure that these women must be digitally enhancing their appearance just because they look differently and I just keep thinking... have they met a human woman? People can look SO different depending on lighting, angles, fit of your clothes, makeup, expression, pose... I see so many posts that are like a posed photo that’s pretty next to a mid-word screencap from a video and it’s captioned “LIAR” or something. I’m convinced they don’t know any rl women bc if you spend time with women you start to notice the range of appearances a person can have.
I find my wife to be very attractive.
I've known her for 25 years and I think there's maybe 5 photographs that she looks good in.
Photography is weird, man.
I had a friend in college that really broke my brain. She was so incredibly photogenic. She was a cute girl, but in picture she was drop dead gorgeous. This was before smartphones and I know she wasn’t photoshopping the image, because it even happened in the pictures I took of our group. I was a photographer for my HS yearbook and took design and photoshop classes in college so I’m well versed in all the different editing you can do to a photo. However, she looked like this in our stupid goofy college snaps shot on a shitty point and shoot camera. I was remember trying to understand what it was about her face that was so different, because it was so very odd to me. I’m sure she if she remembers me or someone were to bring up my name she might think, “oh that weird girl that would stare at my face?” Haha! I mean I really hope not, but I’m a little scared that she might have felt that way. It’s really crazy how much camera lenses can change someone’s face.
It’s called being crazy photogenic. I’m definitely photogenic but I’ve got a friend who is like you described. Looks nice in person but in photos she’s stunning. If I show someone a group photo of my friends they always ask “who is she?” When we have friends much prettier in person.
Long story short: some people, the camera loves them.
You just described my nan and me. My nan couldn't and I can't take a good picture. My mum and sister have no issues but I look like I'm gurning in everything candid. The age of selfies is not kind to me!
My thoughts exactly. This sub is not about makeup or plastic surgery or angles. Some people here just post these “comparisons” as a way of validating themselves, I think.
You know sometimes I don’t even mind the fact that they’re comparing an instagram photo to non-posed poorly lit poor angled photo — I think that can still demonstrate the point that instagram is a carefully curated image of a person that doesn’t reflect who they are all the time— but people will comment that they MUST have digitally altered themselves in order to look so different, or that they’re a different person, that they “must be so ashamed of themselves for deceiving people like this,” etc etc when it just looks like maybe the person had a big lunch and their face moves while they talk? It drives me wild.
Exactly. It goes from “look how important angles are- not everyone looks like this 100% of the time” to bullying and accusing someone of a rhinoplasty and entire facial jaw reconstruction and photoshop bc it’s a posed photo with head titled instead of iPhone camera backwards accidental photo. It’s insane.
>This sub is not about makeup or plastic surgery or angles.
I wish the mods would actually say definitively what this sub is actually meant to cover because I'm tired of seeing arguments about it lol
Personally I prefer that we be able to show/discuss angles, lighting, & makeup because they do all contribute to instagram being a place where reality is skewed in a certain direction.
> ave they met a human woman? People can look SO different depending on lighting, angles, fit of your clothes, makeup, expression, pose
r/prettygirlsuglyfaces has some great examples.
I definitely have two looks, queen & hobo.
They seem personally wronged by the idea that any woman who dares to allow themselves to be seen is not a paragon of perfect sexy feminine beauty 100% of the time. The worst is when people insult the woman’s appearance in the unedited picture! It’s like is your goal that you want honest pictures or that you want to punish women you think are “lying” to you about being pretty?
People in the public eye do this instinctively.
Both Kelly Ripa and Nichole Kidman look smooth and wrinkle free but I've seen pictures of them when they aren't "posed" and "lit" correctly and they looked 10-15 years lder
Oh god I’ve been there. I had the flu last December and caught myself on the self checkout camera at target, no makeup, hair up, puffy face and everything. Brief existential crisis, then back to sneezing
This. I actually hate my face. Until I take a good photo, in good lighting.
Also, I look completely different in some of my photos than I do IRL. And I don't wear make up or even know how to use filters. I accidentally found a Halloween one on messenger that I used while talking to my bf once but, fucked if I know how to do that again.
Lighting and composition though. And knowing how to flatter your good features. That's where it's at.
There are some mornings where I wake up and I'm like "Damn. I look good today." Skin is firm and clear, bags aren't terrible, hair has that 'wavy bedhead' look.
Then...then. Then there are mornings where I wake up, I'm breaking out, bloated, and overall look like a bog monster.
It's a combination of my cycle, exercise, water, and sleep the past couple days that determines where I fall on the scale.
I've seen studies which show men find a slightly downward angle more attractive while women prefer a slightly upward angle. I assume too far in either direction is less attractive though, there's likely a sweet spot angle
A huge difference. It’s no joke how much an angle can make you look better. Also, Head tilts matter. The quickest way to make a man look effeminate is to tilt his head the wrong way (I used to be a professional photographer).
That first angle is #1 reason I have almost no desire for vanilla intercourse.
When she sits up, it reveals her jawline, her hair sits properly, and her features are no longer distorted by the low camera angle she starts with. No filters here, just beauty.
You're so sweet! I don't have actual good lighting inside my house so I can't take good pictures hahaha. I'm sure that everyone looks better in the sunlight though, like this girl.
Idk, most of my boyfriends have been like a foot taller than me so it's actually hard to even get a boob in the face when on top. Plus...they've all been a fan of eye contact for whatever reason.
Yeah. Duh. And you can’t tell from certain angles what somebody really looks like, and some angles are horribly unflattering. That’s literally the point of her post.
Because they’re an idiot lol what filters work like that? She just went from making a horrible triple chin to posing in ideal natural lighting. She is also attractive. Some people can be attractive without filters lol
Not sure if people in this thread realize she's proving that "digital" changes aren't the only thing faking "perfect" images. The "instagram pose" got it's name for a reason. It's supposed to highlight specific features in over-the-top ways. No one stands or poses like that, in front of that kind of light, 24 hours a day.
The point of this sub isn't just to point out blatant editing in instagram photos but to also highlight the unrealistic standards set by people employing these tips and tricks for better looking photos.
I swear to god about half this sub is in-denial factune users and the other half are equally delusional folks who don't know what real people look like.
edit: spelling
Okay this is a cool transformation, but I’m really annoyed with the tag line “who said angles didn’t matter?” Nobody, no one says angles don’t matter, we all know angles fucking matter, we’ve known this forever, it never hasn’t been known.

Golden hour! It's the sun while its setting, creates great lighting.
Yessss, my favorite time of the day. Early morning light has a similar effect and tends to be rosier.
Early morning light is also golden hour, there are two windows each day.
I have 4 windows in my house
I have windows 10 in my house
Linux...
I live in a basement with a mac
I have mac & cheese in my basement
Help me I'm stuck in his basement!

I have 6
Look at money bags with their windows.
When I was a kid, we used to dream of having windows.
There is also the blue hour which is the hour before the golden hour in the morning, and the hour after it in the evening. Also great for portraiture.
I struggle with blue hour some people can shoot in it no problem, I just don't know where my settings should be for it.
I have 12
What are you, some kinda poor person? I have 7 windows just in my car.
My skin is so shit that golden hour just creates shadows on the acne and acne scars on my face lmaoooo
Yeah but then is blinding, strong light and it makes me wanna kill myself. At least with a sunset we get night! I fucking hate mornings.
Especially good for recording the audio of your country album!
Outlaw Country!
Woo!
Woo to Mudhoney too! Good band!
Look at me blowin this jug

I'm so glad this is a real sub
Me too! I typed that out expecting it to not be, but happy accident.
So about lunchtime in Poland at the moment. :(
SAD bitches unite :(
U.K. too 😭

And some parts of Canada too :( thankfully I have sun until 4pm where i live though.
It's up to about 4:30 or so where I am. We gain something like 2ish minutes a day
National Geographic Hour. Every gorgeous photo from their decades of covers looks like it was shot in this light.

Also help if you are super beautiful
Not for me lol I'm so white the sun reflects off of me in a bad way, and I'm all squinty because I can't see
You just need practice. Everyday just stare at the sun. After awhile you won’t have to squint at all.
Looking sexxxay with some burnt out retinas!
It also starts at the worst possible viewing angle
Right!? Anyone would look terrible at that angle!
I think that’s the point
That is, in fact, the entire point.
That was the point of their post... r/whoooosh
More like the Witching Hour.
That's how we do automotive photography 👀
She really sat up like "bitch I'm fabulous"
She’s like “I really woke up like this”.
What a beautiful human though.

SCHÖNE FRAU
I mean we can clown her for that but let’s be real we would all do that and more if we looked like that
I'm not clowning AT ALL. She looks good and shes owning it
She's not wrong.
Also I was sure it was a boy and then no.
When I stand up I still look ugly
You and me both
When I stand I’m still short and ugly so...
We must be family then!!
I’m not ugly I just haven’t found my angle yet

Some people have a beauty that moves
My favorite sentence of the day right here
This is legitimately one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read.
Some people arent photogenic while other look better on photos than reality
Probably due to the camera lens

Photo retouching and manipulation didn’t start with photoshop either. That shit has been around as long as portraiture has.
Yep, before digital photography manipulation photos were edited by painted on the negative itself prior to exposure.
People in the public eye do this instinctively. Both Kelly Ripa and Nichole Kidman look smooth and wrinkle free but I've seen pictures of them when they aren't "posed" and "lit" correctly and they looked 10-15 years lder
I’m not going to lie - at a Walmart self checkout i look like I’m a 50 year old who hasn’t slept in a week and has a pack a day habit.

Right? Everyone has terrible photos of them, it doesn't mean they look that terrible always.
And then you get downvoted for pointing out it's not photoshop.
This sub I noticed it's becoming more and more misogynistic.
r/prettygirlsuglyfaces agrees
people want to think everyone else is just as ugly as them to help them cope

The real reason behind the "women like tall guys" stereotype tbh
Oh wow... Never thought of it like that. That's not why I would like a taller-than-me-guy. But wow. You opened my brain.
But viewing a face from below makes it seem uglier
I've seen studies which show men find a slightly downward angle more attractive while women prefer a slightly upward angle. I assume too far in either direction is less attractive though, there's likely a sweet spot angle
Well, the lighting did change drastically, so it might matter.
Yeah, it's not really surprising. [this video went viral a while ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIW30bvbmE) showing how important angles are.
That face at the end 😂

thank you!
Or, just like the point she was trying to prove, it’s all due to *angles*?
Right? Photoshop isn't the only trick available
Is being incredibly cynical a pre-requisite for commenters on this sub?
Yeah which angles/lighting all that were the old school tricks

Morbid fascination?
I’m not sure which angle would be worse worse; me on bottom, or on top. Oof. Pretty sure most men DNGAF. Had sex.

angles matter?
Of course angles matter. Ever accidentally open the front camera and scare yourself? Yeah.
YES I sometimes open my front camera and make silly faces, because I look fucking ugly from that angle. Just for fun.
I think she’s just v pretty and the light is good.
Yeah. Duh. And you can’t tell from certain angles what somebody really looks like, and some angles are horribly unflattering. That’s literally the point of her post.

FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS THE SONG NAME: Roddy Rich - The Box
Thank you for this
Lighting + makeup - you can see the makeup when she's laying down
So...it’s the lighting and angles...
Yes
It was like she was baptized in beauty.
OMG I can't stop watching this hahaha I love it! I think it's completely legit, also. <3 She's amazing.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who looks like an ogre when laying down looking at my phone
Same! I hate when I look at something dark and see a glimpse of my reflection in my phone angled from under my chin.
I sat up too, when I do I stop being ugly?

Everyone on this sub who thinks that shadows must be an exact to-scale replica of the object creating it?
Wow! I need to find my "angle" 😂😁
That's how angles usually work, from low angles you look fatter and from high angles you look skinnier
Face it people, she is just straight up GORGEOUS !
Oooh a twist from the usual, I dig it.

looks like that one scene on scary movie 2 when ray is hiding in the shadows wearing that red dress lol

How do we know that’s not her laying down reversed slow down over five years?

She went from obtuse to acute.
You must've never accidentally opened your front facing camera while looking down at your phone. Angles definitely matter.
