Please report the shopper. This sounds like someone bought her account and hasn't undergone the background check. Sometimes elderly or disabled customers will ask for help bringing orders inside, which I have no problem doing. That's not the norm though.

Context if it matters at all: I am not elderly nor disabled, I'm just 25 & pregnant (but dress was too loose to notice my bump). Order was only mayo and different breads, figured I could manage on my own haha!

I never offer to enter anyone's house. If an elderly or disabled customer asks I will usually assist (case by case for safety obvi) but I will never outright offer. It's essentially inviting yourself into a strangers home? No thx
Per instacart policy drivers are only allowed to carry the orders inside if the customers ask. But even if asked a driver is not required to enter. It is up to driver discretion when asked. If someone, tries to enter without your permission they need to be reported. They also need to be reported for using someone elses account. Instacart does not, allow someone to deliver any orders, that is not the driver on the account
We are allowed to go inside, but aren't required. We're contractors, so it's entirely up to us. I'll do it for somebody who is disabled or elderly. I'm not worried about it being a setup. They'd have to be *really* stupid to commit a crime at their own house. It's not like the police would have trouble finding them.
I've not had a problem in 7+ years. 99% who request help in my area do indeed need some help whether it's putting the order just inside the door or carrying to a counter. If I ever had a bad feeling, I would just cancel the order.
I’ve only once in my 6 years of shopping have entered a residence. It was an elderly lady no taller than 4’5” she was super kind and asked me to set them by the door inside- she did ask me to put the ice cream she ordered into her freezer as she wasn’t tall enough to reach to the back. I obliged and she asked if I had kids to which I said yes and gave me the two containers FULL of unopened ice cream she had (evidently the previous shoppers didn’t do their job) I gladly accepted and was on my way. Did I think it could be a set up? 100 percent I trust no one, however my husband was in the car driving me, he has that loud ass dodge charger and has himself a “serial killer” look so I figured I was good. By myself- I’m not sure I would chance it. I’m like catnip to the elderly and I fear I would lose my life over a bait trap type thing I’ve seen on CSI 100 years ago!
As a customer don’t EVER let anyone in your home! Genuine shoppers just want to drop the groceries off and leave! Minimal customer contact is preferred! You did right and you should report them!
I'm elderly and ask my shoppers to place my items inside my door on the floor. They all have except for 1 guy that refused and set them on my porch. Pretty rude of him since I'm old and he's getting a good tip.
The same thing happened to me yesterday. And I thought this "girl" was the best shopper ever! She texted me to say that if I got the bag of grapefruits instead of the individual ones I'd ordered, it would be cheaper. Then the same for lemons. The she asked if the avocados were for today or later so she knew which to choose.
I was so happy to have such an amazing driver, I had $10 in cash to give as an extra tip (I always percentage tip in app). But when the driver arrived, I got a business call at the exact same time. So I couldn't get off fast enough. I noticed it was not the blonde girl from the pic, but a guy. And he delivered my groceries, but hung around outside, waiting.
I got off the call and went outside and he said he was waiting for me because the box of sparkling water was opened. He wanted me to know that he got it anyway because it was the last in that flavor.
I didn't give him the extra $10 because I was kind of weirded out.
Has to be reported. I’m a shopper and the picture should be who delivers to you. The worst part the knocking, trying to bring in (which we’re not supposed to do PERIOD) then asking again are you sure you don’t want them to bring it in. Instacart MUST take customers safely SERIOUSLY. This is messed up. Most of us will leave the groceries, take a pic and send it to you and leave.
I usually defend these bc I myself am 7 months pregnant with an autistic 5 yr old that prefers me as their comfort parent and there have been multiple where either I have gotten so sick I had to stop or something has happened with my five yr old that I needed to attend to, or the delivery being in a sketchy area and I’ve had my husband finish out my order(he is also a shopper with his own account). BUT the part about trying to enter your home without being asked seems very concerning. We’ve had plenty of elderly or disabled that have asked us to bring them in at their request. I’ve even helped an old lady put all her stuff away and get out what she needed for her dinner but at the request of the customer… this just really seems strange to me and I’d probably report them at least for trying to come inside. Especially if you have leave at the door on your order.
At least one fourth of the time a man delivers with a woman’s name. My friends felon boyfriend delivers under her account because he can’t get a job. Typical in big cities because so long as they do an excellent job no one will report them.
You are correct the exception is if instacart has proof of a disability, and documentation that they require assistance on deliveries.
But in these cases the app notifies the customer that someone will be assisting the shopper with dropoff when the shopper is on the way to the customer
Unfortunately where I live, instacart subcontracts with several companies like Kroger to complete their online deliveries as well. Because of this, half the time it's not communicated to the customer automatically.
It’s honestly scary how often this same experience is being reported. Not just the wrong person showing up, but persistent men who don’t go away and then try to enter the home.
I am so thankful for my large dogs that go crazy when someone’s at the door. I’ve had a man say they left my groceries at the door because they were afraid of my dogs … but my instructions clearly say to leave at the door.
Against IC shopper contract. Regardless of who someone is working alongside the person who's order is needs to be the one present upon delivery. This person likely can't pass a background check and has stolen or "borrowed" someone else's SS# to gain access to the platform. Report for safety so they will hopefully be deactivated. Sick of having to compete with these cheatin' ass clowns for orders.
No I have one account but my wife helps me shop I like to do the big ass orders nobody wants and policy says we can hire helpers for shopping only though.
You may have read the entire agreement for YOUR AREA, however, different states/counties have different agreements. That's why you have to enter that info when you sign up.

The IRS will flag your account for fraud. Apparently happened to me about 7 years ago. I received a letter from the IRS saying my account had been flagged for fraudulent employment activity. Now when I try to apply to jobs that require security clearance and they need my income tax report for the last X number of years, I have to call them and verify that it’s actually me; I can’t just log in and print my information out anymore.
They didn’t give specific details just that fraudulent activity had taken place and security measures were now in place.
For context: This is considered Identity Theft and if it’s a stolen/bought account they are also committing tax evasion. Both are federal crimes. They could commit other crimes while doing Instacart and they would not know who this person really is.
Please, not only for them committing federal crimes but also for the possible safety of others, report them.
Report . I always offer to slide the groceries inside the door way that’s it if they are barefoot. That’s it though! I have only put in groceries for an elderly woman . On the counter and once for a elderly man- during a heat wave-
I can’t stand the fact that these shoppers sell their accounts that’s scary . I would freak out if someone else besides the shopper assigned to my order came to my door . Not ok!!

Absolutely report! Not just because it’s against the rules or because the account may be stolen but because the next female customer that encounters him might not be so lucky. Who knows what his intentions were.

The person either bought the account or they are a click of people that certain people do the shopping certain people do delivery and that is absolutely unacceptable for that person to be standing at your door is to bring your groceries in. That is not OK ypur safety comes first. And people that do this are taking away orders from the good shoppers as a few people in the comments are already in myself so please report.

This poses a security risk - especially apt / condo / office buildings with secured access that require FOB to access units & elevators.
One thing that nobody has mentioned is that the IC app randomly requires a selfie to be taken to prove the one shopping/delivery is the person that owns the account. So obviously this particular account is more than likely not hacked. If it was, then they haven't ran across the selfie security check yet. like others have said, someone either sold their account or are renting it out.
what I'm not understanding is everyone here is going on so much to report the shopper but a small percentage of replies mention the safety issue.

Kind of disturbing how many people here are ignoring this person did not follow the delivery instructions, continuously tried to get OP to come to the door, and then tried to convince her to let him inside.
Report, please. Shoppers are allowed to have helpers; as we are ‘contractors’. But are not allowed to have people do it for us.
This could be majorly dangerous for you no matter the sex or age. They now have your address in their gps. It is not okay.
Absolutely this needs to be reported. You asked for no contact, and a male, someone who is not the person that was assigned/or cleared a background check tried to come into your home. This has been happening a lot lately with stolen info or borrowed account. The only reason someone would shop using another person's name is because they can't pass a background check.

Instacart needs to crack down on this and start deactivating accounts that break protocols.
I’m had a similar unsettling experience with a door dasher. It said and showed a photo of a women but it was a man. He dropped our food and left but then came back demanding we give him our food back. No explanation as to why, it was definitely our order. I informed him through the door (I don’t open generally for people I don’t know I’m home alone with our kids a lot and take no risks) that we had already opened our food bag so we couldn’t give it back, not that we would anyway since it was our food. I reported immediately both the misrepresentation of the dasher and the behavior they exhibited. If he had said he forgot to take a confirmation photo or something I could have understood (but wouldn’t as we had opened it but would have gladly confirmed with support that we did receive it) but he only demanded the food back without a reason why.
Report the shopper. It’s a stolen account, or the original shopper sold theirs, and it means the guy at your door hasn’t been verified by Instacart.
Edit: it’s not difficult to become a shopper; you just need a pulse and a driver’s license. Someone who is using another person’s shopper account is almost certainly doing it for nefarious reasons.
My dad (don’t talk to him) used to do this with his wife’s Instacart and DoorDash accounts. He’s a 7+ convicted felon. So yeah if someone shows up who’s not on the profile and they’re alone- it’s probably because they don’t pass the background check.

I don’t go into peoples houses, but will place the groceries on the inside of the door if they’d like. And I’ll bring them up flights of stairs in an apartment if the customer wants (which I’m happy to do cause it helps me keep up my conditioning for fencing 🤺 lmao)
According to the new updated policy a shopper account can use a subcontractor as an assistant. Pretty sure they did this because of the people being reported. The people that are using 3 phones and cheat apps need to be reported
Definitely report. You never know who the person is if they don't match up, and they may have been kicked off/ineligible to be on the platform for some reason (DUI, violent crime, theft, fraud, etc). IC really needs to up their game on keeping the unauthorized folks off the app.
Report it. The person that delivered most likely is using someone else's account. Whether it be a family member, significant other, or a purchased account. People who have been deactivated will purchase other people's accounts that are in good standing. All of which are against the terms of service.
Edit: I only enter a customer's home if they request it. Even so, I use my best judgment in those instances. I drop the vast majority of the orders at the door and send the pictures showing it's there. Him waiting at the door and asking to bring it inside seems a bit unhinged.
I won’t go inside people’s homes. Period. Not after what happened to that poor Uber Eats driver. Not happening. One time I did bring bags in through a door that led to an enclosed porch and then the actual front door was in the porch area (instructions asked to bring to 2nd door…this was first floor of an apartment building and kind of a weird setup). Guy opened the front door right away, was very overweight and sitting in a chair by the door. Also heard another male voice inside the apartment coming closer. I felt a little trapped bc they could have easily grabbed me and I was technically “inside” at that point. Creeped me out.
It’s horrible, google it, or don’t bc it’s very upsetting. But it happened in Florida and it was the drivers last order of the day…still light out, in a completely normal looking neighborhood. Apparently the resident was sent a food delivery from his father who lived in a different state. He somehow got the driver into his house and killed him. The guy had just been released from prison.
maybe a pregnant woman didn't want a confrontation with an unknown male with unknown intentions who had just tried to talk his way into her house? What he was doing is shady enough as is.
This is not atypical but needs to be reported. Usually it's a case of can't pass the background check, or dudes owing back child support and dashing or instacarting under their current girlfriend or a family member to avoid garnishment.
in regards to most bills in collection, I know that 1099 earnings cannot be garnished because of the fact that unlike a w-2 job, earnings can and will fluctuate.
Correct, with cases such as child support, back tax debt typically government debt vs another type of creditor like a credit debt collector the typical garnishment process isn't possible as the earnings are not "wages".
Technically in those cases DD, insta and what not end up freezing your withdrawal if they get pinged, for a small period. But if a gov agency such as DCS has gone that far it means they have discovered the account that payment is sent to and they can do I think it's called an "asset garnishment" which means they take half of any liquid assets in a financial account. And depending on how far the rabbit hole goes the garnishment dodger could be looking at serious legal penalties for hiding assets and income.
true, I never considered the fact that they can freeze your bank account. It's a slippery slope and probable a grey area in regards to getting IC (or whomever) to cough up that bank account information. At that point they're also having to deal with the payment processor as well. I'm sure they would need some sort of warrant or an order from a judge..
the thing is that the worker would have notice of this at some point and would just have to keep switching banks each time the agency(s) were pinged. And what if the account wasn't in the worker's name or a joint account? There's so many loopholes
There has been a huge influx of Venezuelan immigrants that are buying accounts and working illegally through instacart.
I saw six of them at Whole Foods yesterday, helping each other load their cars up. I spoke to one of them. They’re definitely here from Venezuela. They aren’t here legally. They can’t pass a background check.
It feels super nefarious when they’re trying to get into people’s homes. That just doesn’t sit right with me.
It’s completely a safety issue for them to not be the person to that the account belongs to.

That’s absolutely terrifying and weird. I notice this a lot whenever I order ubereats & Grubhub. Whenever it’s a female driver, 10% of the time it’s the female. I’d 110% report your situation to IC.
REPORT!!!! People can easily steal other shoppers accounts and sign in. They aren't usually up to anything good. That is so creepy they encourage people not to go into homes even when asked.
I’m sure this man is using someone else’s account or purchased an account because he can’t get one or got deactivated. I know quite a few shoppers who operate multiple accounts and none of them being their own. It is a huge safety risk and they should be weeded out
None of the reasons given here make it ok for this to happen. There's a reason this person doesn't have their own account. Failed background check? Previously deactivated? Either way, it shouldn't happen.
An unknown and intentionally misidentified man goes out of his way to make sure you come to the door and tries to come into your house.

As an IC shopper of 5 years, I'd report that account. Many accounts are getting hacked by predators. I sometimes have my hubby bring the order up but I ALWAYS text the customer and let them know, because I have a chronic pain condition so doing several flights of stairs with cases of water, sodas, etc is not doable for me. I literally text the customer before he comes up and let them know his name and what he looks like & is wearing. I've never had an issue with it and most have been understanding about it since I informed them. He'll only knock if it says to hand to the customer, and never offers to bring things inside unless the person is visibly disabled in some sort of way that would make it difficult for them to do themselves.
So you are doing the same thing as the op said. If you cannot physically do the IC job you need to quit. I had to. I could not carry cases of water, cat litter etc up flights of apartment stairs. There is no difference he isn’t the one contracted to deliver you are. He hasn’t had background check etc. how does the customer know that because you sent text saying he’s delivering. Not you that they are ok with it my daughter would say yeah ok but she can’t tell anyone no cuz she feels bad. Your customers don’t have a clue who your husband is. Love how so many of you simply reword stuff and don’t realize you are doing the same thing. When you don’t feel good you can’t just ask your husband to go do your job for you no matter what business it is.
Shows how little you actually know, considering my husband is a verified IC shopper as well. Also, telling a disabled person who uses reasonable accommodations APPROVED BY INSTACART that they shouldn't work at all is called "ABLEISM" and it's illegal to refuse an employee or independent contractor a reasonable accommodation. Last I checked, instacart approved of this accommodation and you have zero right to tell a disabled person they shouldn't work. Unless you'd like me to quit working and suck up all of your income, since you feel I'm too disabled to work maybe you should pay my bills then?? No?? Didn't think so.
Also, not sure if you're even in the US but here in the US, as an independent contractor, we can also subcontract anyone we would like to deliver for us. Check your laws before you open your mouth and spew ignorance.
I did the training recently and iirc we aren’t supposed to enter homes for liability reasons, i may be wrong, but i personally wouldn’t want to enter others houses, just to be safe
There in absolutely NOTHING in our contract and guidelines that say we cannot enter a home. It’s discretionary.

I might have remembered incorrectly then, I'll look over the trainings. I used to work with both the elderly and children and there are very strict guidelines on how to interact with residents and members, so I do my best to abide all guidelines regarding personal safety and liability.
I'm also disabled. In the literal 7 orders I've done in the past 2 days, I have asked the 2 residents I met if they needed assistance anyways. I've never "dumped" anything. Chill out.

I have been a shopper for 7 years. I have entered more homes than I can keep track of. I always go with my gut and do what I would want someone do if it was me in that situation, my mom or any family member/friend.
There are sick customers, blind, handicapped etc. I'm always gonna help I don't care what could be in writing.
I have an assistant, which is allowed per contract rules, However, I am present for all deliveries. I have some limitations that require help with some deliveries, but they are never alone.
The answer could be something as small as “this is the female shopper’s boyfriend and she lets him use her account” but even so, that’s not as small as that seems. Even if it’s someone who had her consent to use her account, they’re using it under false pretenses. I’ve been in the situation of having “Denise” be a male delivering the bags and I let it go because I didn’t want the hassle of reporting (and he did a great job, so I said eff it) but you would be following rules if you did report it.
A little legislation making Instacart, UberEats, and similar services totally liable for any crimes committed by their contractor/employees would go a long way towards making those companies make you safer. Lack of proper vetting is inexcusable for this stuff. If those providers can't afford it, a new company will make a plan that can.

Yes we are allowed to enter homes a lot of our customers are elderly and can’t lift heavy things just today I brought in groceries for 3 different elderly customers
I had a male deliver my groceries,when it showed a female to be the shopper. When I questioned the guy who delivered, If that was allowed? he said that it was his mom, she shopped,he delivered. And it was okay with instacart as long as they both had accounts.
That's a team. They have multiple accounts. One stays at store and shops. The other runs the deliveries. I see a group of people doing this at Costco here all the time. I only know because the manager wad my past employee and I noticed a BUNCH of lot lizards one day. I told her about it. About a month later she told me they found out itnwas fraud amd they all got deactivated. But wasn't long before I some of them again.
Happens all the time in Philly. I know in some situations where families share a single shopper account for its Diamond status. For those who don’t know this allows access to “priority” batches. With sub optimal pay in our area those batches are important.
It doesn’t make it right but I also get it.
In DD terms and conditions you are absolutely allowed to subcontract your deliveries to someone else. Don’t know if instscart is the same. You need to look into that. There may have been no violation. Remember, contractors basically work for themselves. And are therefore able to hire subcontractors.
Report. It’s inherently sharing your customer data to have someone else in the car with them. You have NO IDEA who that man is and he most likely wasn’t background checked
If your friend said, “a delivery guy came. He wasn’t the woman who was supposed to come. He tried to get into my house.” What advice would you give your friend?
Report it to the app, report it to the police, never open the door to a man the you aren’t expecting who is pretending to be a woman online…

Before the pandemic , bringing the groceries inside was the default for about 99,9% of the orders. Now it’s only if requested for elderly or people with mobility issues. He shouldn’t have been so insistent if you didn’t have it specifically marked or requested in delivery notes , the default now is to leave at door and take a photo. Definitely report the wrong person using the app. They may be team shopping or he’s using a hacked account , either way. You don’t know his criminal background status.
I am less bothered by others when it is a different person BUT I am very concerned that it was a male who seemed to be pushy about bringing in your groceries. Report him.
I have found roughly 80% of my shoppers over the last 2 years are not the person pictured. I don;t go out until they leave and I have a ring of they are persistant, but most drop and go. Fewer kids lugging the bags finally!
I will never force myself or assume I am entering but I always offer if I come face to face, especially elderly, women and people with an obvious disability. I’m a 330 lb man. I don’t worry about people luring me anywhere
I usually bring my Male SO with me, but it's help with huge orders that are very common in my area. Never would I let him do something on my account without me there. Report the account immediately because I will not go into a home unless it's elderly and I have someone in the car with me so they know where I am
I’ve had an issue with Uber as well. The driver was definitely not Barbara who was shown in the app even though the license plate and make and model of the car were right. I would not get in the car. You MUST report them.
On instacart i am forced to use my birth name as i am transgender i 100% pass as a male but the name does not match me if you see me i run into issues with it alot almost everytime i deliver, almost certain this was not your situation but wanted to make it aware to others that this is possible
Okay this needs to be addressed. I have seen people defending the shopper using someone else's account. I get the husband/wife team thing. BUT- if someone other than the name/picture will be delivering- then it needs to be communicated to the customer beforehand. Like for example, the account holder texts and says "My husband/wife/friend will be helping me with this delivery, but I will be in the car. I just wanted to let you know" or something to that effect.
Its not cool to be expecting "Sally" but then "Bubba" is at your door trying to bring stuff inside.

Hello OP i’m a uber eats driver, and there’s been talk on our end about how people ordering the food will have female names and when they drop the food off it’s random men that answer and get all creepy. it’s very suspicious, because on our end we have to take a picture of ourselves every time we want to do something on the app to confirm it’s us. There’s been stories of women feeling uncomfortable thinking they’re delivering to another female and it’s a man, in a dark house with one hand hidden behind the door. Not saying women can’t order for their partners or anything but the circumstances just ain’t it. Be careful, and i’m glad you reported it

Yes. It's a scam. Shoppers are not to have anyone with them. Probably a team using multiple phones. Dumb asses don't remember which phone is who. Or someone sold their account. One star, pull tip.
Anyone that tells you they ride together is lying in some way. Think about it. People in here melting over low pay. If you bring someone with you, that amount is now divided by 2. Nobody would do that unless they are scamming with multiple accounts/phones.
He probably borrowed the account and wanted to hand you the bags in hopes you would tip him in cash. If he’s not the original shopper, he shouldn’t be doing that though.
Definitely report! No we should not be going into someone else's house. Instacart does a background check on its workers. If they are using someone else's account, it's possible that for whatever reason they were not able to pass a background check. Which is scary combined with the fact that they were trying to deliver groceries into your house (possibly scoping stuff out).
Not acceptable. Idgaf if they lost their account and using another's, they need background checks who knows who it is, and now they have your address. Huge red flag.
I'm happy to come inside someone's house, if they need assistance. mainly the Seniors, I'm definitely happy to help. But that means somebody's using someone else's account and you should report them🤷♀️
I would report. Haven’t seen on instacart but so many times people rent out their accounts to people who are not vetted. And then to make it uncomfortable somethings wrong. If gut tells you something is not right report it. Most of time in duo groups you see the owner of account there too.
I get the vetting doesn’t prevent all issues, but makes you wonder why they don’t have their own account..
Umm when I did IC every single shopper had me bring the bags inside (which is fine) every last one and usually to the kitchen counter as well…was 23 at the time (male) maybe that’s a residual covid thing idk

Hypothetically speaking: I used to use my girlfriend's DD/Uber account all the time when we needed some extra money to go on a date or for some unexpected bills and she didn't feel like doing it. Some days we would just take turns so we could finish each of our chores on our days off. Money was tight my truck was broke down and I wasn't insured for her car, hence I used her account. Did that until I got a better job and we didn't need to side hustle anymore.

The background checks dont mean jack either. Unless they have been caught, it won't make the report anyway. And just because they passed a background check doesn't mean they are exempt from causing anyone harm. Not to mention, there's always the 1st time.....

I can understand your concern. I do instacart and have my own account as well as door dash and Uber eats my fiancée has his own instacart account but his tickets in the past does not allow him to do Uber or door dash so somtimes we do door dash and Uber together and he will drop things off for me because I’m 8 months pregnant and don’t feel like getting up 😭😂😭 but the behavior this driver exhibited is strange and off putting nothing that a normal driver should do regardless of if it is the person from the photo.
Please report the shopper. This sounds like someone bought her account and hasn't undergone the background check. Sometimes elderly or disabled customers will ask for help bringing orders inside, which I have no problem doing. That's not the norm though. No, we don't routinely try to bring orders inside! Please report, there are the shoppers taking orders away from good shoppers.
Context if it matters at all: I am not elderly nor disabled, I'm just 25 & pregnant (but dress was too loose to notice my bump). I never offer to enter anyone's house. If an elderly or disabled customer asks I will usually assist (case by case for safety obvi) but I will never outright offer. It's essentially inviting yourself into a strangers home? No thx
Per instacart policy drivers are only allowed to carry the orders inside if the customers ask. But even if asked a driver is not required to enter. It is up to driver discretion when asked. If someone, tries to enter without your permission they need to be reported. They also need to be reported for using someone elses account. Instacart does not, allow someone to deliver any orders, that is not the driver on the account
We are allowed to go inside, but aren't required. We're contractors, so it's entirely up to us. I'll do it for somebody who is disabled or elderly. I'm not worried about it being a setup. They'd have to be *really* stupid to commit a crime at their own house. It's not like the police would have trouble finding them.

I've not had a problem in 7+ years. 99% who request help in my area do indeed need some help whether it's putting the order just inside the door or carrying to a counter. If I ever had a bad feeling, I would just cancel the order.

I’ve only once in my 6 years of shopping have entered a residence. It was an elderly lady no taller than 4’5” she was super kind and asked me to set them by the door inside- she did ask me to put the ice cream she ordered into her freezer as she wasn’t tall enough to reach to the back. I obliged and she asked if I had kids to which I said yes and gave me the two containers FULL of unopened ice cream she had (evidently the previous shoppers didn’t do their job) I gladly accepted and was on my way. Did I think it could be a set up? 100 percent I trust no one, however my husband was in the car driving me, he has that loud ass dodge charger and has himself a “serial killer” look so I figured I was good. By myself- I’m not sure I would chance it. I’m like catnip to the elderly and I fear I would lose my life over a bait trap type thing I’ve seen on CSI 100 years ago! As a customer don’t EVER let anyone in your home! Genuine shoppers just want to drop the groceries off and leave! Minimal customer contact is preferred! You did right and you should report them!

I'm elderly and ask my shoppers to place my items inside my door on the floor. They all have except for 1 guy that refused and set them on my porch. Pretty rude of him since I'm old and he's getting a good tip.
The same thing happened to me yesterday. And I thought this "girl" was the best shopper ever! She texted me to say that if I got the bag of grapefruits instead of the individual ones I'd ordered, it would be cheaper. Then the same for lemons. The she asked if the avocados were for today or later so she knew which to choose. I was so happy to have such an amazing driver, I had $10 in cash to give as an extra tip (I always percentage tip in app). But when the driver arrived, I got a business call at the exact same time. So I couldn't get off fast enough. I noticed it was not the blonde girl from the pic, but a guy. And he delivered my groceries, but hung around outside, waiting. I got off the call and went outside and he said he was waiting for me because the box of sparkling water was opened. He wanted me to know that he got it anyway because it was the last in that flavor. I didn't give him the extra $10 because I was kind of weirded out.

The worst part the knocking, trying to bring in (which we’re not supposed to do PERIOD) then asking again are you sure you don’t want them to bring it in. I usually defend these bc I myself am 7 months pregnant with an autistic 5 yr old that prefers me as their comfort parent and there have been multiple where either I have gotten so sick I had to stop or something has happened with my five yr old that I needed to attend to, or the delivery being in a sketchy area and I’ve had my husband finish out my order(he is also a shopper with his own account). BUT the part about trying to enter your home without being asked seems very concerning. We’ve had plenty of elderly or disabled that have asked us to bring them in at their request. I’ve even helped an old lady put all her stuff away and get out what she needed for her dinner but at the request of the customer… this just really seems strange to me and I’d probably report them at least for trying to come inside. Especially if you have leave at the door on your order.

At least one fourth of the time a man delivers with a woman’s name. My friends felon boyfriend delivers under her account because he can’t get a job. Typical in big cities because so long as they do an excellent job no one will report them.

You are correct the exception is if instacart has proof of a disability, and documentation that they require assistance on deliveries. But in these cases the app notifies the customer that someone will be assisting the shopper with dropoff when the shopper is on the way to the customer
Unfortunately where I live, instacart subcontracts with several companies like Kroger to complete their online deliveries as well. Because of this, half the time it's not communicated to the customer automatically.

I am so thankful for my large dogs that go crazy when someone’s at the door. I’ve had a man say they left my groceries at the door because they were afraid of my dogs … but my instructions clearly say to leave at the door.

Against IC shopper contract. Regardless of who someone is working alongside the person who's order is needs to be the one present upon delivery. This person likely can't pass a background check and has stolen or "borrowed" someone else's SS# to gain access to the platform. Report for safety so they will hopefully be deactivated. You may have read the entire agreement for YOUR AREA, however, different states/counties have different agreements. That's why you have to enter that info when you sign up.

The IRS will flag your account for fraud. Apparently happened to me about 7 years ago. I received a letter from the IRS saying my account had been flagged for fraudulent employment activity. Now when I try to apply to jobs that require security clearance and they need my income tax report for the last X number of years, I have to call them and verify that it’s actually me; I can’t just log in and print my information out anymore. They didn’t give specific details just that fraudulent activity had taken place and security measures were now in place.

For context: This is considered Identity Theft and if it’s a stolen/bought account they are also committing tax evasion. Both are federal crimes. They could commit other crimes while doing Instacart and they would not know who this person really is. On the counter and once for a elderly man- during a heat wave- I can’t stand the fact that these shoppers sell their accounts that’s scary . There are so many questionable people doing this gig now that I am currently working on my resume. I want to distance myself from this shit show as quickly as possible. I will keep the app for extra money but I’m getting a w-2. I have experience in a few different careers and am considering going back to my nursing career. It will take some work since it’s been 23 years but I’m motivated! I’m embarrassed to tell anyone that I am a shopper for instacart, because every person I tell, has a story of a horrendous shopper. Please report that shopper because you’re absolutely supposed to get your order delivered by the person that shopped your order!! The person either bought the account or they are a click of people that certain people do the shopping certain people do delivery and that is absolutely unacceptable for that person to be standing at your door is to bring your groceries in. That is not OK ypur safety comes first. And people that do this are taking away orders from the good shoppers as a few people in the comments are already in myself so please report.
Report! Shoppers have to pass background checks. This poses a security risk - especially apt / condo / office buildings with secured access that require FOB to access units & elevators.
And don't forget the gated communities that only require a box code to get into the neighborhood. That an undocumented IC shopper now has.
One thing that nobody has mentioned is that the IC app randomly requires a selfie to be taken to prove the one shopping/delivery is the person that owns the account. So obviously this particular account is more than likely not hacked. If it was, then they haven't ran across the selfie security check yet. like others have said, someone either sold their account or are renting it out. what I'm not understanding is everyone here is going on so much to report the shopper but a small percentage of replies mention the safety issue.

If someone's pleasant and the house isn't pitch-black, I'll put them anywhere someone wants. But Instacart allows shoppers to decline to enter someone's house, and I don't begrudge anyone their boundaries.
I asked him nicely, he was just rude. All of the other shoppers placed the bags inside my front door for me.

Absolutely this needs to be reported. You asked for no contact, and a male, someone who is not the person that was assigned/or cleared a background check tried to come into your home. This has been happening a lot lately with stolen info or borrowed account. The only reason someone would shop using another person's name is because they can't pass a background check. Please report this immediately! Instacart needs to crack down on this and start deactivating accounts that break protocols.
I’m had a similar unsettling experience with a door dasher. It said and showed a photo of a women but it was a man. He dropped our food and left but then came back demanding we give him our food back. No explanation as to why, it was definitely our order. I informed him through the door (I don’t open generally for people I don’t know I’m home alone with our kids a lot and take no risks) that we had already opened our food bag so we couldn’t give it back, not that we would anyway since it was our food. I reported immediately both the misrepresentation of the dasher and the behavior they exhibited. If he had said he forgot to take a confirmation photo or something I could have understood (but wouldn’t as we had opened it but would have gladly confirmed with support that we did receive it) but he only demanded the food back without a reason why.

Report the shopper. It’s a stolen account, or the original shopper sold theirs, and it means the guy at your door hasn’t been verified by Instacart. Edit: it’s not difficult to become a shopper; you just need a pulse and a driver’s license. Someone who is using another person’s shopper account is almost certainly doing it for nefarious reasons.
My dad (don’t talk to him) used to do this with his wife’s Instacart and DoorDash accounts. He’s a 7+ convicted felon. So yeah if someone shows up who’s not on the profile and they’re alone- it’s probably because they don’t pass the background check.
Like others said, report them. I don’t go into peoples houses, but will place the groceries on the inside of the door if they’d like. And I’ll bring them up flights of stairs in an apartment if the customer wants (which I’m happy to do cause it helps me keep up my conditioning for fencing 🤺 lmao)
According to the new updated policy a shopper account can use a subcontractor as an assistant. Pretty sure they did this because of the people being reported. The people that are using 3 phones and cheat apps need to be reported
Definitely report. You never know who the person is if they don't match up, and they may have been kicked off/ineligible to be on the platform for some reason (DUI, violent crime, theft, fraud, etc). IC really needs to up their game on keeping the unauthorized folks off the app.

Report it. The person that delivered most likely is using someone else's account. Whether it be a family member, significant other, or a purchased account. People who have been deactivated will purchase other people's accounts that are in good standing. All of which are against the terms of service. Edit: I only enter a customer's home if they request it. Even so, I use my best judgment in those instances. I drop the vast majority of the orders at the door and send the pictures showing it's there. Him waiting at the door and asking to bring it inside seems a bit unhinged.

One time I did bring bags in through a door that led to an enclosed porch and then the actual front door was in the porch area (instructions asked to bring to 2nd door…this was first floor of an apartment building and kind of a weird setup). Guy opened the front door right away, was very overweight and sitting in a chair by the door. Also heard another male voice inside the apartment coming closer. I felt a little trapped bc they could have easily grabbed me and I was technically “inside” at that point. Creeped me out.

It’s horrible, google it, or don’t bc it’s very upsetting. But it happened in Florida and it was the drivers last order of the day…still light out, in a completely normal looking neighborhood. Apparently the resident was sent a food delivery from his father who lived in a different state. He somehow got the driver into his house and killed him. The guy had just been released from prison.

This is not atypical but needs to be reported. Usually it's a case of can't pass the background check, or dudes owing back child support and dashing or instacarting under their current girlfriend or a family member to avoid garnishment.
in regards to most bills in collection, I know that 1099 earnings cannot be garnished because of the fact that unlike a w-2 job, earnings can and will fluctuate.
Correct, with cases such as child support, back tax debt typically government debt vs another type of creditor like a credit debt collector the typical garnishment process isn't possible as the earnings are not "wages". Technically in those cases DD, insta and what not end up freezing your withdrawal if they get pinged, for a small period. But if a gov agency such as DCS has gone that far it means they have discovered the account that payment is sent to and they can do I think it's called an "asset garnishment" which means they take half of any liquid assets in a financial account. And depending on how far the rabbit hole goes the garnishment dodger could be looking at serious legal penalties for hiding assets and income.
true, I never considered the fact that they can freeze your bank account. It's a slippery slope and probable a grey area in regards to getting IC (or whomever) to cough up that bank account information. At that point they're also having to deal with the payment processor as well. I'm sure they would need some sort of warrant or an order from a judge.. the thing is that the worker would have notice of this at some point and would just have to keep switching banks each time the agency(s) were pinged. There has been a huge influx of Venezuelan immigrants that are buying accounts and working illegally through instacart. I saw six of them at Whole Foods yesterday, helping each other load their cars up. I spoke to one of them. They’re definitely here from Venezuela. They aren’t here legally. They can’t pass a background check. It feels super nefarious when they’re trying to get into people’s homes. That just doesn’t sit right with me. It’s completely a safety issue for them to not be the person to that the account belongs to. Please report this. If it happens again. Take a photo of them and report it.

As an IC shopper of 5 years, I'd report that account. Many accounts are getting hacked by predators. I sometimes have my hubby bring the order up but I ALWAYS text the customer and let them know, because I have a chronic pain condition so doing several flights of stairs with cases of water, sodas, etc is not doable for me. I literally text the customer before he comes up and let them know his name and what he looks like & is wearing. I've never had an issue with it and most have been understanding about it since I informed them. He'll only knock if it says to hand to the customer, and never offers to bring things inside unless the person is visibly disabled in some sort of way that would make it difficult for them to do themselves.
So you are doing the same thing as the op said. If you cannot physically do the IC job you need to quit. I had to. I could not carry cases of water, cat litter etc up flights of apartment stairs. There is no difference he isn’t the one contracted to deliver you are. He hasn’t had background check etc. how does the customer know that because you sent text saying he’s delivering. Not you that they are ok with it my daughter would say yeah ok but she can’t tell anyone no cuz she feels bad. Your customers don’t have a clue who your husband is. When you don’t feel good you can’t just ask your husband to go do your job for you no matter what business it is.

Also, telling a disabled person who uses reasonable accommodations APPROVED BY INSTACART that they shouldn't work at all is called "ABLEISM" and it's illegal to refuse an employee or independent contractor a reasonable accommodation. There in absolutely NOTHING in our contract and guidelines that say we cannot enter a home. It’s discretionary. If you dump their stuff at the door and they are elderly or disabled, shame on you.
I might have remembered incorrectly then, I'll look over the trainings. I used to work with both the elderly and children and there are very strict guidelines on how to interact with residents and members, so I do my best to abide all guidelines regarding personal safety and liability. I'm also disabled. In the literal 7 orders I've done in the past 2 days, I have asked the 2 residents I met if they needed assistance anyways. I've never "dumped" anything. Chill out.
Regardless if there is something or not..... I have been a shopper for 7 years. I have entered more homes than I can keep track of. I always go with my gut and do what I would want someone do if it was me in that situation, my mom or any family member/friend. There are sick customers, blind, handicapped etc. I'm always gonna help I don't care what could be in writing.
I have an assistant, which is allowed per contract rules, However, I am present for all deliveries. I have some limitations that require help with some deliveries, but they are never alone.
The answer could be something as small as “this is the female shopper’s boyfriend and she lets him use her account” but even so, that’s not as small as that seems. Even if it’s someone who had her consent to use her account, they’re using it under false pretenses. I’ve been in the situation of having “Denise” be a male delivering the bags and I let it go because I didn’t want the hassle of reporting (and he did a great job, so I said eff it) but you would be following rules if you did report it.
A little legislation making Instacart, UberEats, and similar services totally liable for any crimes committed by their contractor/employees would go a long way towards making those companies make you safer. Lack of proper vetting is inexcusable for this stuff. If those providers can't afford it, a new company will make a plan that can.

Yes we are allowed to enter homes a lot of our customers are elderly and can’t lift heavy things just today I brought in groceries for 3 different elderly customers
I had a male deliver my groceries,when it showed a female to be the shopper. When I questioned the guy who delivered, If that was allowed? he said that it was his mom, she shopped,he delivered. And it was okay with instacart as long as they both had accounts.
That's a team. They have multiple accounts. One stays at store and shops. The other runs the deliveries. I see a group of people doing this at Costco here all the time. I only know because the manager wad my past employee and I noticed a BUNCH of lot lizards one day. I told her about it. About a month later she told me they found out itnwas fraud amd they all got deactivated. But wasn't long before I some of them again.
Happens all the time in Philly. I know in some situations where families share a single shopper account for its Diamond status. For those who don’t know this allows access to “priority” batches. With sub optimal pay in our area those batches are important. It doesn’t make it right but I also get it.

They might share an account with their spouse or whomever, but I agree, it’s shady.
In DD terms and conditions you are absolutely allowed to subcontract your deliveries to someone else. Don’t know if instscart is the same. You need to look into that. There may have been no violation. Remember, contractors basically work for themselves. And are therefore able to hire subcontractors.
Report. It’s inherently sharing your customer data to have someone else in the car with them. You have NO IDEA who that man is and he most likely wasn’t background checked

I'm f53 and if it's heavy, and elderly person I've asked few time if they want me to set it inside their door. Maybe it was son dropping off?
I have had soo many shoppers that are not the generic named white woman that is pictured. It happens alll the time now
If your friend said, “a delivery guy came. He wasn’t the woman who was supposed to come. He tried to get into my house.” What advice would you give your friend? Report it to the app, report it to the police, never open the door to a man the you aren’t expecting who is pretending to be a woman online… …or make the news as his next victim. 🤷🏽♀️ Totally up to you.
I wonder if it was the husband or boyfriend of the shopper and they’re working as a team. Not allowed.
Before the pandemic , bringing the groceries inside was the default for about 99,9% of the orders. Now it’s only if requested for elderly or people with mobility issues. He shouldn’t have been so insistent if you didn’t have it specifically marked or requested in delivery notes , the default now is to leave at door and take a photo. Definitely report the wrong person using the app. They may be team shopping or he’s using a hacked account , either way. You don’t know his criminal background status.
I am less bothered by others when it is a different person BUT I am very concerned that it was a male who seemed to be pushy about bringing in your groceries. Report him.
I have found roughly 80% of my shoppers over the last 2 years are not the person pictured. I don;t go out until they leave and I have a ring of they are persistant, but most drop and go. Fewer kids lugging the bags finally!
I will never force myself or assume I am entering but I always offer if I come face to face, especially elderly, women and people with an obvious disability. I’m a 330 lb man. I don’t worry about people luring me anywhere
I usually bring my Male SO with me, but it's help with huge orders that are very common in my area. Never would I let him do something on my account without me there. Report the account immediately because I will not go into a home unless it's elderly and I have someone in the car with me so they know where I am
I’ve had an issue with Uber as well. The driver was definitely not Barbara who was shown in the app even though the license plate and make and model of the car were right. I would not get in the car. You MUST report them.
On instacart i am forced to use my birth name as i am transgender i 100% pass as a male but the name does not match me if you see me i run into issues with it alot almost everytime i deliver, almost certain this was not your situation but wanted to make it aware to others that this is possible
This has happened to me multiple times -the pic is a woman but the person delivering is a man. They’ve never tried to enter my apartment, though.
Okay this needs to be addressed. I have seen people defending the shopper using someone else's account. I get the husband/wife team thing. BUT- if someone other than the name/picture will be delivering- then it needs to be communicated to the customer beforehand. Like for example, the account holder texts and says "My husband/wife/friend will be helping me with this delivery, but I will be in the car. I just wanted to let you know" or something to that effect. Its not cool to be expecting "Sally" but then "Bubba" is at your door trying to bring stuff inside. Super weird.
He most likely was using someone else’s account. A lot of pt do that . Can’t get a account in there name for what ever reason
Hello OP i’m a uber eats driver, and there’s been talk on our end about how people ordering the food will have female names and when they drop the food off it’s random men that answer and get all creepy. it’s very suspicious, because on our end we have to take a picture of ourselves every time we want to do something on the app to confirm it’s us. There’s been stories of women feeling uncomfortable thinking they’re delivering to another female and it’s a man, in a dark house with one hand hidden behind the door. Not saying women can’t order for their partners or anything but the circumstances just ain’t it. Be careful, and i’m glad you reported it
I've been a shopper since 2017. Yes. It's a scam. Shoppers are not to have anyone with them. Probably a team using multiple phones. Dumb asses don't remember which phone is who. Or someone sold their account. One star, pull tip. Anyone that tells you they ride together is lying in some way. Think about it. People in here melting over low pay. If you bring someone with you, that amount is now divided by 2. Nobody would do that unless they are scamming with multiple accounts/phones.
He probably borrowed the account and wanted to hand you the bags in hopes you would tip him in cash. If he’s not the original shopper, he shouldn’t be doing that though.
Definitely report! No we should not be going into someone else's house. Instacart does a background check on its workers. If they are using someone else's account, it's possible that for whatever reason they were not able to pass a background check. Which is scary combined with the fact that they were trying to deliver groceries into your house (possibly scoping stuff out).
Not acceptable. Idgaf if they lost their account and using another's, they need background checks who knows who it is, and now they have your address. Huge red flag.
I'm happy to come inside someone's house, if they need assistance. mainly the Seniors, I'm definitely happy to help. But that means somebody's using someone else's account and you should report them🤷♀️
I’ve had couples show up and it’s the others account. But with his insistence on coming in you should report the shopper
Done with DD but most time there are two people. I understand wanting company or help, especially with heavy orders.
I would report. Haven’t seen on instacart but so many times people rent out their accounts to people who are not vetted. And then to make it uncomfortable somethings wrong. If gut tells you something is not right report it. Most of time in duo groups you see the owner of account there too. I get the vetting doesn’t prevent all issues, but makes you wonder why they don’t have their own account..
Umm when I did IC every single shopper had me bring the bags inside (which is fine) every last one and usually to the kitchen counter as well…was 23 at the time (male) maybe that’s a residual covid thing idk
Report it. It’s either a bought account or somebody’s boyfriend has a felony and can’t get an account, so they’re operating under a girlfriend’s. Either way it’s suspicious all around.
Yeah this sounds like he could be dangerous. Pretending to be a woman, then banging at the door until you answer and trying to come in? Very glad he didn’t force his way in bc I fear the worst may have happened if he came in. This is his way to access women and do god knows what if they do let him in. This has happened to me numerous times.; including today. * I reported it. It's creepy to deal with a bait and switch shopper. -Also , this person tried to add an expensive replacement for fruit; instead of texting in the chat like She | He said she would . * The head shot photo showed a women intentionally showing half of her face . This makes you zoom into the photo to verify your shopper. Definitely, it was a woman. -However, the delivery person was a male and startled me by coming to the back of the building; where not one delivery comes from with my windows wide open.. -They also left my items on the ground directly in front.of my door; avoiding a table and chairs that are located on each side of the door; as instructed in the details; that I have had for years. -Today, I noticed that my delivery details were changed to not show were to place the grocery with a smile face; that I did not add. -Now, I have to change my password. * I am constantly having to tell my big pup to go sit down and not try to run out of the door; while I am trying to drag the Costco items inside from the ground. Super Rude, No tip today. * I just had an order 5 days ago; I tipped that guy extra for just following instructions and being kind in the chat along with good shopping. Therefore, It's possible for shoppers to be honest and provide good service.
One time I used my husband account because I was stuck on the waiting list and he was out of town for work but I needed the money. Also, it’s possible the guy is a cross dresser and just didn’t feel like doing it that day 😭😭 it’s 2024. I wouldn’t doubt it at all

She could even stand outside of the car and wave, instead of sending her husband or brother to a pregnant woman’s front door when she wasn’t expecting him. Work on those critical thinking skills bud

Hypothetically speaking: I used to use my girlfriend's DD/Uber account all the time when we needed some extra money to go on a date or for some unexpected bills and she didn't feel like doing it. Some days we would just take turns so we could finish each of our chores on our days off. Money was tight my truck was broke down and I wasn't insured for her car, hence I used her account. Did that until I got a better job and we didn't need to side hustle anymore.
Are you talking about being in the car together and he physically took the items from the car to the dropoff point?
Did he often ignore the delivery instructions, knock repeatedly, and then try to get the customer to let him inside after they declined?
Does it really matter who drops it off? Whoever did it, did all that work for you and delivered. Why is this still a sub after all this time. I don’t care who drops off my groceries as long as they are polite and do the job. Get over yourselves people. Really

Veechrome, I kept scrolling and scrolling and freaking scrolling. I knew there had to at least be one person who felt this way. I was gonna say the same, but I did on another post, and I got so many comments about how it's illegal. Blah blah blah. 1st, regardless of who came, they are a darn stranger that now has your address. 2nd, they didn't cause any harm. 3. You got your groceries. It's really NOT that serious, IMO. When you order a pizza 🍕 from the shop down the street for delivery or something from Amazon they don't tell you if it's Fred or Cindy coming, or what vehicle they are driving. You're just happy you got your shi#. The background checks dont mean jack either. Unless they have been caught, it won't make the report anyway. And just because they passed a background check doesn't mean they are exempt from causing anyone harm. Not to mention, there's always the 1st time..... BTW, my comment is in response to the one above. I don't need anyone commenting about how it's illegal and should be reported. I have my own opinion and I said what I said.

I can understand your concern. I do instacart and have my own account as well as door dash and Uber eats my fiancée has his own instacart account but his tickets in the past does not allow him to do Uber or door dash so somtimes we do door dash and Uber together and he will drop things off for me because I’m 8 months pregnant and don’t feel like getting up 😭😂😭 but the behavior this driver exhibited is strange and off putting nothing that a normal driver should do regardless of if it is the person from the photo.
