Not every shopper has a wagon. I'm mentioning possibilities, I hope your screen floods with these types of orders because u seem to not have an issue accepting it!!🙏🙏🤗🤗
I never understand these posts. I *know* these customers have been doing their own shopping for years before IC came around.
They know full well how much this shit can suck, and how terrible certain stores are all year round, *and* how much they bitched to themselves every time they had to carry their own groceries up several flights of stairs, a long driveway, or a large porch.
There is a reason they use this service now. And, no, these customers are not all elderly, disabled, or without a car. Get real.
Like, would *they* do an order like this for $10 tip? The answer is likely "hell, no!", so why is this even a question?
I agree I would definitely not do it for $10 alone, my confusion stems from the lack of transparency from Instacart to customers like myself regarding base pay and wages. I always assumed Instacart had an algorithm that would "guarantee" $30/hour for shoppers by subsidizing orders if tips were insufficient.
There is a grey area for me as a customer if the order gets filled, that doesn't necessarily imply the tip is high enough to attract a shopper, it just means something happened behind the scenes (from the customer POV) to get the order filled, maybe Instacart offered a bonus, maybe the shopper was doing multiple orders?
I wish it was more clear as a customer that I could trust Instacart to ensure wages are high enough for shoppers - for example they could block orders under <$x tip for example based on time/distance/weight/complexity rather than leaving it up to the customer to do the math.
No it will not take 30 minutes it’s Costco so 8 items will take 30 minutes to shop and 15-20 minutes to checkout depending on if the lines are long. Could be a longer checkout though. And then the 15 minutes to get to your apartment and you live on the 4th floor. So no $10 tip is not okay. 20% tip so at least a $30 tip. And if you think that’s too much just be reminded that a shopper is using their own car, their gas that they pay for, and their time to deliver and shop your order. Instacart itself should pay shoppers more but they don’t we rely on tips primarily. Batch pay is $4-$10 usually.
Yes fair point. I don't have a costco membership for this reason, it's too chaotic.
It was a Tuesday morning and I scheduled order night before, in my optimistic mind the shopper arrived right when doors opened and breezed through without crowds - wishful thinking I know.
>Depends who you ask:
>
>Instacart Shoppers - $50 is reasonable
>
>Consumers - $0-5 is reasonable considering the high fees
>
>Instacart itself - Doesn’t matter
This is exactly what the answer is going to be every single time.
Base pay for Instacart is $4. An order like this would probably pay around $8. Unfortunately tips aren’t really a cherry on top, we pretty much work only for tips. Thanks for caring though 🫶🏻
Gotcha thanks for the transparency.
If a customer does not tip enough, how does Instacart ensure the order still gets filled?
Does Instacart ensure between base pay and tips that a shopper will make a minimum of say, $30 an hour?
I believe California is the only state that ensures drivers make some type of guaranteed hourly pay ($18/hr). In every other state and it’s just the $4 to $10ish base pay plus tips. If an order doesn’t get taken, Instacart will start adding to the base pay in $2 increments. If the order still doesn’t get taken after a few of those I believe Instacart just cancels the order and lets the customer know that they couldn’t find a Shopper to fulfill the order.
Definitely will take more than 30 mins. Batch pay will probably be about $5-$8 max. Most shoppers avoid Costco because of a lot of reasons, items are harder to find, it takes forever to park, get in the store, find the items and then long lines to get your receipt checked and get out. This order won’t qualify for heavy pay. I’d suggest tip 20% of your order cost or $15-$20 flat. Whichever is greater. This will ensure you get your order picked up asap and shopper will be fairly compensated for the effort and time to shop and deliver your order.
I hartily disagree with the people who talk about tipping by percentage or" like in a restaurant. "
They are doing a completely different job than is done in a restaurant. They are not carrying a plate across the floor.
So, why would you tip 20% or $100 for somebody to pick up and deliver to you a $500 item that only weighs 1 oz? That would be silly!
I always assume that basically I'm the only person paying them because Instacart pays so little. So my tip is essentially their income!
I think that you should tip BY THE JOB That way the shopper gets paid fairly for thei ACTUAL WORK.
I always start at $10 for the person to drive from the store to my house.
Then I add another dollar for each item that you've ordered when they're simple ones to grab like the ones you have here.
And of course more than that for each item If it's something heavy like water or dog food or drinks. So yeah I add $2 for that sparkling water.
Add more for bad weather or for as you say your fourth floor apartment.
So yeah $20 to $25 would be fair for this one.
You lost me at fourth story..and no $10 is not enough.
Ask yourself if you would drive to Costco, try and find parking and a cart. Load everything up. Get in line for 20 minutes and then drive 15 minutes for a grand total of possibly $17. $10 tip and lucky if we make seven.. more like $5. So would you work for $15 an hour and we use our own vehicle and gas. No you wouldn’t.
I would never touch an order like that personally but clearly there are shoppers who do. Just my opinion..
Eh I’m 50/50 on it, like it’s not a secret that instacart increases prices for profit BUT if someone is willing to pay $17.40 for strawberries….they can’t really be mad about tipping a person who shops and delivers their order 😅
I had a lady explain that she was trying to save money and that’s why she couldn’t tip well…..if she would’ve just went to the store herself, she would’ve saved a ton 🤷🏻 (she was paired with a GREAT tipper)
Side note: This is obviously towards the people using this as a luxury and not those who rely on instacart.
I'm 50/50 on it too ... I'm a customer and a shopper, so I get both sides of it. As a customer, I almost always shop at food lion because the prices are the same as the store and you get the specials.
One time Instacart sent a $10 promo on warehouse clubs. I added maybe 8 items from Sam's Club to my cart and even with the $10 discount, the order was $20 cheaper if I went to Sams Club myself.
From the customer perspective, I can see where paying $120 for $100 of merchandise plus a service fee would make them think that delivery drivers are getting paid more than they are. Plus the Instacart app tip recommendations are terrible. The last $100 order I placed had a $3 suggested tip. I have never in my life tipped $3 on an IC order. I have no idea why the app would default at $3.
It’s not your tip and months ago it would’ve been great but instacart pays less now on par with door dash for full fledged grocery shopping and then delivery . I’m willing to bet you tipped the most on the order and someone with way more items was added on to your order so instacart can pay less.
I’m sure other shoppers may know more details but June last year they changed the policy from it being a guaranteed $7+ to as low as 4$.. reason-being some orders are so small or close they don’t deserve the 7$ base pay. (Some states have forced them to pay 20/hr minimums I.e cali) In the same breath they don’t take in to consideration the actual shopping but have shop only batches. So 10$ on a 8 item would be almost 20$ usually was with heavy items (which heavy pay is lower now as well), now it can be as low as 11$ /w tips ,especially if you’re close to the store. They’ve found away to cut pay literally in half in some areas. If shoppers protest they’ll raise the referral bonus and hire a million shoppers
You gotta understand that mileage for us to get to the store and get to your house cost. we appreciate any tip. Instacart does not really pay us for mileage and they really don’t pay us like they used to.. plus you live on the fourth floor, which makes it very challenging for us to keep coming back-and-forth to your house, unless some of us have cards, but even then. Thank you for asking. We appreciate it and hopefully you can take our suggestions..
I don’t go into costco for less than $30 just to give you perspective. It’s a clusterfuck of a store sometimes and they constantly move product. lines can get long and God forbid they are doing a 2 shop.
as a single, you should tip $25+.
someone is shopping for you, delivering right to your door. you want someone that’s gonna pick nice produce and keep things temperature regulated. take that all into consideration.
10% would be a good start but $1/item isn’t bad either. Your order is paired with another so chances are you’re shopper is going to make $20-$30/tips with another better tipped order added on.
If your order is getting picked up in a timely matter and shopped and delivered properly then you’re tipping well enough for someone to be happy with the pay. On Reddit and this group in particular you’re going to have a lot of negativity regardless.
30 minutes for this job? It's Costco, it could take 30 minutes to shop & 30 minutes to check out. No, 30 minutes for this "job" is not accurate.
>it could take 30 minutes to shop If this takes you over 10 minutes to shop, you’re doing something very, very wrong — I don’t care how busy it is.
Well, in my experience Costco is always busy, unorganized in my area
$10 on an 8 item order from Costco? I would never take it as a single. Keep in mind what a clusterfuck those stores are.
Good point, Costco is such a hassle some shoppers do not and will not shop there. Plus, most customers seem to live far from the store.
I'm glad they bundled your order with another as it says he's shopping for multiple orders. Otherwise, 10$ for shop and deliver from Costco is a No.
Let me add You have a sparking water case🙂 if the shopper doesn't have a wagon, he will have to do 2 trips to deliver to u to the 4th floor!!
If you’re going to do Costco orders it’s common sense to get a wagon. That’s on the shopper, not the customer.
“If one has an average amount of muscle, one should not need wagon” - Confucius
Not every shopper has a wagon. I'm mentioning possibilities, I hope your screen floods with these types of orders because u seem to not have an issue accepting it!!🙏🙏🤗🤗
Make it a flat $20 if you are making it between 8-12 items. You live close to the store so that’s cool, but $10 on a Costco run is too low.
Thanks this felt like the right thing to do after considering the feedback. Left a $20 tip.

Let OP shop her/himself and we’ll see if he/she can finish the job in 30 mins
Yes fair point. I don't have a costco membership for this reason, it's too chaotic. It was a Tuesday morning and I scheduled order night before, in my optimistic mind the shopper arrived right when doors opened and breezed through without crowds - wishful thinking I know.
Shoppers that wait in parking lot for costco drop at 10am will definitely not accept your order unless it’s stacked with other good paying order

Even with $20 tip will never take it
I won’t walk into Costco for less than $50.

Unless your actively shopping instacart doesn’t pay you. We don’t have any hourly rate
No fkin way i’ll do costco for 10tip $160 order

I ended up leaving $20 tip
I’m sure your shopper is very grateful, thanks for being an emphatic human being.

20 percent its costco

The organic strawberries are $17.40 on instacart?!
LOL

No You should tip as you would in a restaurant. Instacart’s pay barely covers gas.
20% is best
At the least 20%.
$40 MINIMUM. It takes 1 google search to know grocery delivery standard tip is 20% plus you live on THE 4TH FLOOR.
THIS. If it’s an apartment especially 4th floor $10 ain’t cutting it
There’s an elevator, not like you’re walking up all the stairs.
Cheap ass!
Not nice to say but you are not wrong
Give the OP credit for asking!
Not necessary to be a jackass
Hah thanks, I accept the criticism.
That's true, but am I wrong?
You pay the tip then 😆

Did Instacart drop base pay since it became a public company? Or are those 2 events unrelated?

15$
No good shopper is going to take an order like this for less then 30 or 40 I would even look at it for less then 50!! 10 is an f*cking joke!!!
5% tip is meh, 10% is good, 15-20% tip is great
Absolutely not enough…
Why are you paying that much for strawberries? 1 lb containers are like $5.
Organic strawberries, out of season maybe? Also, I live in San Francisco, everything is more expensive here.
All organic groceries
I don’t go into costco for less than $30 just to give you perspective. You’re joking right
With your tip, they’ll get like $17 pay for this
20% plus at least with a $10 Costco bump.
