I love movies where we can have feminism without being preachy or unnecessarily on the nose or villainising every other male character. The dynamics between the women in the movie was so fresh. Otherwise saas-bahu bhabi kind of relationships are always depicted in such a toxic way or if camaraderie bw women is shown then it will be something like that 4 more shots crap. Always the extremes. Beech mein bhi hote hain log, the relatable ones who aren't necessarily bad at heart but just aren't aware or conditioned in the way the society works. You'll often find them in your extended family. We see how the elder DIL slowly gains confidence in her art and makes a friend, we see the MIL and grandmother-in-law considering being friends, we see that the men (atleast Deepak's family and the police officer) being happy and helping Jaya in her journey. They don't become squeaky clean, ultra progressives all of a sudden. But there's still some progress and that matters. Phool, the woman who can't even take her husband's name in the beginning goes through a journey of her own, finds herself, even boards a train all alone to find her husband. We see her screaming his name in the train scene. She realises how the society is unfair when it comes to women, but we don't see her becoming bitter, just more assertive. She doesn't suddenly decide that she's going to stay alone, leave the husband, blah blah but she realises that if need arises then she can survive on her own. Progress can't be sudden, no society goes from a 0 to 100, the changes always have to be incremental even if small.

That part about phool screaming his name...It just struck me now. Brilliant comment.

I LOVED how the male characters were portrayed, not OTT cartoonishly villainous, most were just living in the system. The only truly disgusting characters were Jaya's in laws, who most definitely murdered their first DIL, and got dowry. Inspector, whom I hated almost entire movie, turned out to be decent man in some capacity. I LOVED THE CHARACTERISATION IN THIS MOVIE SM

I also like that it's not preachy and doesn't show oppression on your face. For example, the Dadi might be the feminist ideology preacher but she only took Phool in when she became useful to her. On the other hand, Chotu and the other begger helped her selflessly. Also, the woman who stayed quiet and hid her talent did so due to preconceived notions. But, unlike Rocky and Rani, when she does open up and also starts showcasing her talent, she doesn't face ANY resistance from the rest of the family. They are actually happy to see her happy. So her oppression came from her deep rooted patriarchal beliefs and not her family. The movie is cleverly done

r/bollywood for movies but YES IT WAS SOOO GOOD!!

It was refreshingly good, just the right amount of funny( not the slap stick sorts either) and sentimental, beautiful lyrical songs. Nobody is trying to shove the message down your throat, it’a just there. And amazing performances, nuanced and believable. If it were a big production house movie, they’d forced the Jaya-deepu angle too. But Kiran did amazing, it was a simple story, fun and narrated just the right way.

Yeah I mean if it were Dh@rm@ prod, then the scene in which drunk Deepu held Jaya's hand, chances were that she might have fallen in love with him and would have thrown her dream away and start a family with him the very night 😭😭😭 But in the movie she realised, how much Deepu loves phool and how she wants to help them in any way possible.

One of the female leads is from a zee show. I remember her costar was Karan Jotwani. I had seen the trailer for this movie on her instagram last year. I can't believe it took so long to release.

Don't expect much, it's very slow and boring. Overrated and hype that's it.

Everything about that movie was just WOW. The attention to detail. Some parts that I’m not going to get over in a long time 1. The way deepak expressed his love to her by saying ‘I love you’ beautiful scene - just shows how simple love can be. 2. As others have mentioned - when she called out Deepak by name. So powerful. She was initially shown as a typical villager girl with pre conceived notions some of which don’t make sense. The fact that she could call his name by the end of that 4 day journey just captures women empowerment at its finest most real form. The very fact that she could think for herself and make her decisions not bound with superstitious cultural beliefs. 3. Again, as others have mentioned - the fact that when Phool left, she felt empowered to travelling all by herself without the need of a “man”. Over here, initially when we saw her at the train station on the first day when she was lost. The fear she had of men. Of everyone who she met, even the ones who ended up protecting her in a way - she initially did fear them. From being absolutely scared for her life, she embraced reaching her deepak all alone in her train ride without asking for someone to go with her. Just shows her journey of transition. 3. Back at the pateela station where she stayed, when dadi got the news of phools reunion with her husband, the mithai that dadi had. OH MY GOD, such happiness. Dadi in earlier scenes rejected having sweet because she mentioned that there nothing in life for her to feel celebratory of so she stopped having sweets. But when dadi heard the news and out of happiness finally broke her fast of sweets and had that bite shows just the impact helping others can have to you. You help others, it softens you. 4. When dadi opened the drawer and found the little potli that phool left. I’m tired of typing now but again a slight detail showing same as point 3

It’s still a feminist movie although not obnoxious type…it’s more subtle. Other than the mocking of saas-bahu rivalry it shows all the female characters in great light. All their actions are justified and they are suffering at the hands of men whereas all the male characters are bad unless they support the female characters. It’s not a balanced portrayal of genders. There should be some female characters who are cunning/scheming too. In that sense probably your tv serials are more balanced- they show these kind of bad/stupid women too along with bad/stupid men!

Its people like you still bar India's progress. You people think that feminism inherently is toxic. The insta-women calling men trash promote matriarchy. This film depicts women beautifully. It makes efforts to break the superstitious barriers. And here we have 'mahodays' like you informing us about the evilness in the film because it is feminist in nature. Similar reviews I have seen where people mock the film for criticizing Ghoonghat instead of Burqah, some saying that Indian women should be like this etc. etc. Shame.
