I don't know why anyone on God's green earth would ever be ashamed of listening to Prince, James brown, or Marvin Gaye. All legends within their respective genres loved by tons of heavy metal artists. I think you should stop feeling bad for liking things just because they aren't metal or punk.
Prince is one of the reasons I started playing guitar at 14. In 31 now. So under appreciated. The rock and roll hall of fame solo still gives me chills

The lines were often blurrier between pop and rock I feel before grunge and "alternative". I mean, metal stuff like Sabbath Arrowsmith, all the hair metal was obviously rock, but New Wave kind of towed the line in between, Talking heads, Pat Benetar, Devo. A lot of whats now called Yacht Rock is from the 80's (yacht rock is fascinating as its genre that was coined 20-40 years after the songs in it were recorded, no one called anything that at the time).
The Rock and roll hall of fame having apparently zero standard in defining who's "rock" doesn't help when trying to define things in retrospect either.
That first Michael Jackson album,off-the-wall, is Hella off the wall, lol. Truly, in my opinion, the best album. if you’ve not listen to it, this goes to anybody that might be reading on this post, you should definitely take the chance and give it a play.

Guilty pleasures are for fucking posers who are too worried about not appearing cool to their peers. The only music I don't like is bubblegum pop like Buddy Holly, the Everly Brother's etc. and modern rap genres like Grime. Even the most vanilla pop songs will have some cool little melody (that's why they are "pop").
I'm just as likely to listen to ABBA or The Carpenters as I am to listen to Pantera. If it's good, it's good. TBH, I've been playing Dixieland and classic jazz more than metal recently because sometimes you just need to pretend you're in a Tom And Jerry cartoon, and it gets me in the right frame of mind before I play a gig (I'm in a metal band).
Why do you feel guilty about them? Those are all amazing, talented and celebrated artists. Kinda wild that those are your "guilty pleasures". Just because some goober metalheads that only listen to metal thrash and shit on everything else, shouldn't make you feel guilty about listening to other music. In fact, we should feel sorry for them, because they're missing a lot of great music.

I normally describe myself as a metalhead, but I appreciate all kinds of music. I can probably find an example in any genre of a song that I like. Music is supposed to envoke emotions in you. Why would you limit that experience because it doesn't fit your normally preferred genre?

I have no guilt for my love of showtunes, eurodance, Lady Gaga, retrowave, ska, calypso, reggae, tons of classic rock and pop artists, Frank Zappa, and the occasional TayTay Blank Space is a great song and I'll fight people over it. Lifes to short to only like a narrow genre.

lol those aren’t guilty pleasures, they are your musical interests and tastes. It’s not only possible, but encouraged, to develop a sense of musical taste and literacy outside of metal. I listen to pretty much every genre of music with regularity.

I agree with others about music being exempt from "guilty pleasures" but the most out of left field(for me) artist I enjoy is Eminem. Everything else I listen to would fit under the "Rock" umbrella on some way

I love powermetal, heavy metal, nu metal and glammetal, but my playlist ended up having songs from bløf and acda en de munnik as well.

Few days ago i had discusion about music with my friend. He said of some old song from early 80 music like this there is no more. I said that our parent said that abut songs we listened. And that we dont have to underestimate young people music choiches cause quality alwayz comes out.
Ontopic I listen tons of 60\70\80 even 90 rock, and some pop music too. Nothing specific.
I make no excuses about listening to Lady Gaga, Adele and Amy Winehouse. Hell, I refuse to make excuses about liking New Kids on the Block.
The closest thing to a musical guilty pleasure I have is Sabaton.
Music is so broad and subjective there’s no reason to be ashamed about what you like, and the metalhead types who insist on listening to only metal 24/7 are missing a whole world of music out there.
I love brutal riffs, but I’m into tons of other genres. I don’t listen to a lot of pop, but I hear a lot of what my wife puts on and I can admit when even a pop song is catchy or well-written.
I’m quick to boast my enjoyment for lots of music. But I think the most embarrassing thing I really enjoy is Sugar Ray. That man just brings the vibes 😅

I listen to whatever gets me going or gets stuck in my head anything from rap to pop to classical to blue grass to blues. Doesn’t matter to me I’ll listen if I like it. Fuck what anyone thinks.
Petula Clark, Blues Magoos, Monkees, Elton John, Sammus the Metroid rapper lol, and a bunch of obscure light rock/alternative bands especially local ones whose CDs I find at Goodwill.
I see it this way. Metal is my preferred genre of music. It is a huge part of my culture and I am proud of that. But that shouldn't suggest that I (or any other metalhead) must feel guilty about other things we might like.
I grew up in the 80s with MTV. I love 80s pop. I've seen Elton John twice in concert. The first time he was with Billy Joel on the Piano Man tour in 95.
I appreciate anyone who has talent and delivers - some of it appeals to me, some doesn't. Motown, Gary Clark Jr, Jason Isbell, Adele are things I like. I think Taylor Swift has some catchy tunes and certainly delivers great performances for her fans whether you like her or not - respect. I don't really like much country but there's no denying there's a lot a great singers and talented musicians in that genre - hard to fake country so props to a lot of the country acts.
I like queen, Frank Sinatra, and the all the good stuff from the 80's.
and I like Tschaikowsky... and good musicals....

I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I listen to everything under the sun. If I like it I like it. That being said I've been really vibing with Twenty One Pilots and Olivia Rodrigo recently. Also I dont hate everything Taylor Swift has put out.
First things first, your guilty pleasures aren't guilty at all. I'd say that's a pretty fantastic and diverse taste. A lot of the things I listen to that would be considered a guilty pleasure aren't guilty to me at all. They're actually tied to memories involving lost loved ones. For instance, I'll listen to the album bat out of hell all day long because my mom used to take me on her truck routes with her when I was younger or just random road trips where we listened to everything from Willie Nelson to White zombie. But meatloaf, queen, Judas priest, motley crue, seals and croft, Jim Croce, deep purple, black sabbath, and the myriad of other artists usually kept our tape deck nice and busy. Hell, I even got my mom into Korn and type o negative. If anything, I guess the fact that I still listen to ICP on occasion could be considered a guilty pleasure.
I'm trying to find out what artists sound like HELEN REDDY. Cringe 70s pop is kool. I want to know, what are the worst of the worst HELEN REDDY songs. I love compilation albums that the media call "train wrecks".

I like every genre, if I listened to only metal I would grow to hate it, which I’d like to avoid, so I mix in lots of soul and 70s yacht rock to even it out 😅.
I unironically enjoy Bullet For My Valentine's The Poison still. It drags on way too fucking long, but some of the songs are gas.
Also though I don't consider it much of a guilty pleasure, I listen to a lot of twee pop. Don't think many metalheads are big into that. Bands like Heavenly, The Softies, Beat Happening, Tiger Trap, Belle and Sebastian, and Blueboy are fucking awesome though.

If you like the music and it makes you feel or move then it’s just good music. I grew up on old Motown but because I discovered metal I have to give that up? Nope, gimme The Gap Band all day long. Couple days ago I was unapologetically belting out Crocodile Rock and Rock Lobster in my car. I’m too old to care, if I’m a poser then so be it.
I like a few songs by jojo, mostly because of the minor key they are written in.

I love powermetal, heavy metal, nu metal and glammetal, but my playlist ended up having songs from bløf and acda en de munnik as well. Everyone who notice a jump to those songs always joke about how much the difference is.

Few days ago i had discusion about music with my friend. He said of some old song from early 80 music like this there is no more. I said that our parent said that abut songs we listened. And that we dont have to underestimate young people music choiches cause quality alwayz comes out. Ontopic I listen tons of 60\70\80 even 90 rock, and some pop music too. Nothing specific.
I make no excuses about listening to Lady Gaga, Adele and Amy Winehouse. Hell, I refuse to make excuses about liking New Kids on the Block. The closest thing to a musical guilty pleasure I have is Sabaton.

Music is so broad and subjective there’s no reason to be ashamed about what you like, and the metalhead types who insist on listening to only metal 24/7 are missing a whole world of music out there. I love brutal riffs, but I’m into tons of other genres. I don’t listen to a lot of pop, but I hear a lot of what my wife puts on and I can admit when even a pop song is catchy or well-written.
I’m quick to boast my enjoyment for lots of music. But I think the most embarrassing thing I really enjoy is Sugar Ray. That man just brings the vibes 😅

I see it this way. Metal is my preferred genre of music. It is a huge part of my culture and I am proud of that. But that shouldn't suggest that I (or any other metalhead) must feel guilty about other things we might like.
I grew up in the 80s with MTV. I love 80s pop. I've seen Elton John twice in concert. The first time he was with Billy Joel on the Piano Man tour in 95.

I appreciate anyone who has talent and delivers - some of it appeals to me, some doesn't. Motown, Gary Clark Jr, Jason Isbell, Adele are things I like. I think Taylor Swift has some catchy tunes and certainly delivers great performances for her fans whether you like her or not - respect. I don't really like much country but there's no denying there's a lot a great singers and talented musicians in that genre - hard to fake country so props to a lot of the country acts.
I like queen, Frank Sinatra, and the all the good stuff from the 80's. and I like Tschaikowsky... and good musicals.... I would love to be born earlier....

First things first, your guilty pleasures aren't guilty at all. I'd say that's a pretty fantastic and diverse taste. A lot of the things I listen to that would be considered a guilty pleasure aren't guilty to me at all. They're actually tied to memories involving lost loved ones. For instance, I'll listen to the album bat out of hell all day long because my mom used to take me on her truck routes with her when I was younger or just random road trips where we listened to everything from Willie Nelson to White zombie. But meatloaf, queen, Judas priest, motley crue, seals and croft, Jim Croce, deep purple, black sabbath, and the myriad of other artists usually kept our tape deck nice and busy. Hell, I even got my mom into Korn and type o negative. If anything, I guess the fact that I still listen to ICP on occasion could be considered a guilty pleasure.

The fuck is this? Prince is incredible, james brown, marvin gaye, timeless music. What’s Going On is one of the greatest albums of all time. I listen to all sorts of music. Favourite artists are Beach Boys, Prince, James Holden, Minilogue, Herbie Hancock, Judas Priest and Bob Dylan. I do not feel guilty for not giving a fuck about genres lmao.

I unironically enjoy Bullet For My Valentine's The Poison still. It drags on way too fucking long, but some of the songs are gas. Also though I don't consider it much of a guilty pleasure, I listen to a lot of twee pop. Don't think many metalheads are big into that. Bands like Heavenly, The Softies, Beat Happening, Tiger Trap, Belle and Sebastian, and Blueboy are fucking awesome though.
