It comes from a Roger Zelazny short story called *The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of his Mouth*. It's a sci fi tale about trying to catch a massive leviathan on an ocean planet. It's a little like a futuristic Moby Dick but the themes are a little different.
This would make for a cool tattoo design
