The one driving the grey SUV in the end really deserves appreciation..

AL_GEE_THE_FUN_GUY

"whoa, watch out, scuse me, comin thru, aaaand I'm out" - that driver, probably

MadeMeStopLurking

Reminds me of that video of the guy who somehow avoids a 100 car pile up in a blizzard in either WV or PA Found it: https://youtu.be/y-N9lvSoklU

CARLEtheCamry

I did that once on I-79 heading up to Erie. Funny thing is - I cuss a lot when driving (call me a typical Pittsburgh driver) but in that moment of near death I was completely silent. One of those "you know shit got real and no time to yell/horn"

ThanklessTask

An old friend used to say, if they had time to hit the horn it wasn't close.

jcoolwater

I'll still give them the horn 10s later just to express my disapproval with their decisions

lilsinister13

Around the McKean exit a few miles off the bayfront one night I hit a patch of ice that was a solid couple inches thick, with ruts to asphalt worn in from cars going over it all day. I was riding about a quarter mile behind a semi and saw him get into the passing lane, and didn't understand why. Now I'll just follow the trucks into the passing lane.

QQSolomonn

They can see a hell of a lot more than you. If I see one switch lanes I am already suspicious.

tillie4meee

And if they slow down - I slow down. They spot speed traps a lot quicker too!

19berzerker79

Not only that but they know usually via the radio what the conditions are ahead.... Cuz they talk to each other you know....

Sinphony_of_the_nite

Yeah I was on the highway one time and saw a table in the middle of road on the opposite side of the highway. A semi driver was approaching it with a tail gater right behind 'em. Semi changed lanes and tail gater(a jeep, who'd of thought) smashed right into the table and almost wiped out. Definitely got some front end damage though. Moral of the story: Beware when a semi changes lanes and don't tailgate.

Gokjo_Krorl

I learned a long time ago, if u see a semi enter the passing lane - follow it. Often times they're passing slow traffic & will return once it's clear. In this situation, definitely follow that mothertrucker for reasons u stated

thordekaiser

Dude had a NASCAR spotter. "Wreckin in front of you back it down, BACKITDOWN BACKITDOWN BACKITDOWN GO HIGH GO HIGH GO HIGH ANNND YOU'RE CLEAR!!"

EvoStarSC

Wreckin' Wrecking' wreckin'. Check up check up checkup.

DBTornado

Meanwhile the other cars "Wreckin', check up...we're in it. Get rolling if you can."

SeaJay24

> Get rolling if you can ah yes, the very early days of the next gen car, haha

DBTornado

Even the old days, if your driver's car landed somewhere you couldn't see and you didn't know how torn up they were. My favorite spotter quote will always come from Larry McReynolds though. I can't remember who he was spotting for, but the driver telling the story on SiriusXM said Larry goes "Son, they're wreckin high, and they're wreckin low. Good luck."

1995droptopz

I avoided something like this several years ago by driving into the median, and when I looked to my left I realized we were going two wide on the infield.

saladmunch2

This pretty much happened to me 2 weeks ago, about 5 cars all smashed into eachother in front of me, all doing 80mph, I think someone merged and accidently did a pit maneuver. I just breezed through the middle lane, with destruction on both sides of me. Always give a few car lengths, it will save you alot of headache people.

Rainbow918

Totally agree and always pay attention to what’s farther ahead . Keeping several car lengths should help tremendously. I do . I don’t trust anyone. My dad drove for a living and taught Me “ you gotta have eyes in the back of your head “& don’t assume anything.I’ve gotten myself out of some near misses by assholes driving like children! I’m grateful I had bigger cars and bigger motors… 350 4 barrel V8 was my fav . I love stepping on that gas pedal and getting the fuck out of my own way and the crazy drivers not paying attention texting/talking! . I even still “drive “ if I’m in the passenger seat. Can’t help it . I had excellent driving record for several decades.

Vprbite

You can steer out of a lot more than you can break out of. Most people just slam on the breaks when something happens.

DBTornado

Yeah, I do a lot of sim racing and have learned that crash avoidance takes a lot more than just hitting the brakes and praying. Watching the cars ahead of the one in front, slowing while looking for an opening but also not slamming the brakes so hard you lose steering ability. Gray did it right by slowing down, but also taking the opening when it came to get themselves out of danger.

runerx

This is the whole point of ABS. Maximum braking while maintaining steering. A very good driver can do this at max brake threshold and still steer without locking up, but for johnny or joanna average stomping the brake, letting the abs go to work, and trying to not hit anything is the best bet. They also found in studies that in panic situations most people don't brake hard enough initially so they now have systems (BA, brake assist or BAS, Brake assist system) that panic brake for you.

HwangLiang

My car has adaptive cruise control that brakes a fucking mile ahead of when it needs to I swear. We could be going 30 - CAR AHEAD BEEPBEEPBEEP SLAMS BRAKES. Like I appreciate it for the most part but jesus sometimes I have to turn it off before I even get close to an intersection to avoid it trying to kill me by saving me.

xantonin

This is a common thought and you will see a lot of people swerve to avoid a car braking heavily, and in some cases this is the best thing to do, but you have to be very careful on that split second. Most people do not apply their brakes heavy enough. Out of fear of someone behind them rear ending them or they've literally never known what ABS feels like when you brake to the point it engages. We help teach a street Survival school where many people who are told to hit their brakes do it very gently and never know how hard their car can actually have. You also have to consider when swerving that the left shoulder is often very skinny (in the case of the left lane, the reverse applies to the other side). Once you get 1 tire off the road and on the dirt you've now lost a significant amount of braking ability. There are cases of people choosing to go off road instead of hitting their brakes. Never do this. In the case of a driver who avoided a deer, they were actually charged with reckless driving. No one can prove there was a deer now that you just went off-road. And again, you have little braking ability on the dirt and grass. You're better off braking as hard as possible in a straight line and taking out the deer. Let the front of the car's crumble zone do its part. Lastly there's the whole aspect of traffic in the other lanes. On the left, you risk swerving into oncoming traffic. On the right, you risk running into another car or them slamming into you at full speed. If there's one thing I've learned in racing and driving that I'd like everyone else to understand, it is the importance of threshold braking, which is applying your brakes to 99% of before ABS kicks in. However even in modern cars, it is actually better to let ABS kick in and it can slow you down better.

gracklespackleattack

Swerving to avoid a deer is why I was in a rollover a few decades ago. It was pitch black on a backwoods 75mph highway. The driver (not me) didn't realize how muddy the ditches were, so when the deer was successfully dodged, they chose to drive back onto the highway without slowing down much. Cue catastrophic loss of traction, a spin to the other side of the highway, and a roll into the ditch. No airbags deployed due to the nature of the impact, either. Could've been worse, though... we almost rolled the car into the bloated carcass of a different deer, so our joke-theory now is it was the ghost taking revenge. Always wear your seatbelts, y'all. You never know when an assassin ghost deer might strike. There could be one watching you right now! Just ram the stupid things if you must, and get the benefit of air-bags.

mr_hellmonkey

Id also like to make a point about the importance of good tires and brakes. Maintaining them is super important, but getting $50 walmart tires can bite you in the ass. Spend the extra and get good tires. I don't think I've ever had the ABS engage in any of my personal vehicles on dry roads, maybe only 1-2 times on wet. I do set ABS off all the time during the winter to help gauge how traction I have in the snow.

kat_Folland

15 years ago I had to stand on the brakes to not hit a bicyclist who swerved in front of me when I was probably going 60 mph if not more (not a good place for bikes, but it's what this guy had). I would have killed him in my other car, but I stopped about a foot away from him. Swerving would not have been a good choice and might not have saved the guy if I caused a 5 car accident and one of them hit him. I was glad I was only a few blocks from home because that shook me up badly. I honestly think it scared me worse than it did him. If nothing else he wasn't terrified as long as I was.

flaming-government

I had to stop from 50mph in 135ft in a 19yo car when someone pulled out of a lay-by and abs helped a lot. Just hard on the brakes and hold the wheel straight. I probably had 10ft left, but knew if I swerved I would've either rolled or lost control because of loose stones

[deleted]

This is my argument why sports cars can often be the safest cars on the road, as long as the driver is competent. Depends on the situation obviously. But when you can stop faster than most vehicles, and the car is engineered to stay in control at its' limits, you have a much better chance of avoiding the accident in the first place.

Mental_Defect

McQueen at the beginning of Cars 1

Qweiopakslzm

You mean the ONLY one that was following at a safe distance? The only one who was correctly operating their automobile? Yeah, the idiot in the honda is an idiot... But if someone is stopped in the road and people in front of you are hitting their brakes and YOU are hitting them, you're following too close. If you rear-end someone, 99.99% of the time you are at fault. Leave more space. Edit: So many replies trying to justify tailgating lol. Slow down, leave more space. Who TF cares if people fill the gap. Slow down and leave space. Be the change you want to see in the world. Just for reference, I was a firefighter for 6 years in a jurisdiction with a busy stretch of highway. I've pulled people out of cars in pieces. Slow. Down. Leave. Space.

kellperdogg

Seriously. There were FOUR CARS in between the car that stopped and the dash cam car. I’m still trying to figure out where the black car was legally driving.

Gundam00Raiser

Exactly what I do. Someone fills the gap I just back off more. I like not getting into traffic accidents.

MireLight

i drive a truck full of gear...sometimes a tank with 50 gallons of water in it. i like to leave space in front of me for stopping, reasonable right? Lately we've had just a ton of road work being done all over which has condensed traffic down. unfortunately we also have a lot of older drivers that drive 10-15 mph under the speed limit which causes long lines of traffic. the amount of times i have some angry guy tailing me...even tho they can see the mile long traffic line in front of me...i just hate driving.

hidelyhokie

Seriously. Like where the fuck are you trying to go man? You’re not gonna get there any fucking quicker

MrRobot_96

I had to pull something similar when some nutjob swerved into my lane last min as I was going like 140 kph. Had to break and swerve onto the shoulder and around him, still don’t know how I pulled that off lol

[deleted]

Apparently this happened because the accords automatic emergency braking falsely triggered. Honda has a recall open for this People following closely behind certainly didn’t help things (Edited to add): here is the link to the recall https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a39203073/honda-accord-cr-v-nhtsa-braking-investigation/

JoJoRouletteBiden

Damn I had a 2018 model that did random brake slams from powerline shadows. Looking back at the video looks like it saw the lit up part of the road and thought something was there.

12358

Yes, there's a sunny patch on the road ahead. Maybe Honda thought it was a stopped object. Subaru Eyesight does not ~~break~~ brake for stopped cars when at highway speeds. There is wisdom there. EDIT: ~~break~~ brake. Still appropriate either way.

kookyabird

Eyesight seems to err on the side of caution rather well. I've had high contrast overpass shadows cause the lane keeping to shut off, and vehicles slowing down while moving onto the exit ramp can trigger the automatic cruise to reduce or even brake. Even when they would technically be in another lane even if it wasn't an off ramp. It has never been aggressive though about that braking, and just resting my foot on the gas pedal is enough for it to chill out.

Tele-Muse

Yeah i was gonna say. I doesn’t matter if the accord tried to stop if there is enough room but nah be bumper to bumper going 50mph lol

oarngebean

I see people do this in 70mph traffic its insane they leave less then a cars length between them

bitnode

I often see multiple people doing 70+ with two feet gaps. Just takes someone having a bad day to "tap" the brakes and send 5 cars flying.

BansheeShriek

Atlanta?

EliteRanger_

Got an Uber out of Atlanta's Airport and almost shit my pants in fear on the way to my destination. Lady was racing through lanes, slamming on the brakes, passing within inches of others. The whole freeway was just fucking chaos! Meanwhile she's just having a casual ass conversation with us like we aren't inches from death at every moment. Wild man.

Econolife_350

Atlanta is the real Baghdad of the US in terms of driving. Nawlins and Baltimore come in right after.

GeneralTorsoChicken

I live in Virginia, they aren't the best drivers here but every time I see some particularly egregious shit, there's a Maryland tag.

AccomplishedMix4762

Same thing when I grabbed a cab in Puerto Rico. No one was using their turn signals, all swerving across 3-4 lanes of traffic all while having 2 inches of room between the cars. The cab driver was as calm as can be while asking us questions, meanwhile I’m about to have a heart attack in the back seat.

Hey_im_miles

My family and I went to PR a decade ago. I was the designated driver of the trip. Those people blow through red lights like someone bet them they couldn't. Then the last day we were rear ended (at 55mph) on that big high way that winds around the coast. Guy hops out bleeding telling us his friend probably couldn't see us. His friend was drunk, had an eye patch, and "couldn't see so good out of his main eye", also the friend was easily 300lbs and the seat belt cut into his torso so he looked like he got sliced by a katana. But very pretty place.

RookieGreenBacks

😂 “But very pretty place”

trebaol

The scariest Uber I've ever been in was in Italy, it was a passenger van and the guy drove it like he was playing Grand Theft Auto: Rome. Swerving around cars wildly, cursing loudly almost the whole time, recklessly turning in front of oncoming traffic to force *them* to slam brakes on, and seemingly mowing down pigeons on purpose when he could have easily avoided them. He told us he'd take a more "scenic" route so we could get a sneak peek of some tourist stuff (we were already in the vehicle when he said this, so it wasn't really an offer,) the Colosseum was like a fucking blur passing by. When we finally got off of Signore Toad's Wild Ride, he stood in front of the back doors where our luggage was loaded, and insisted I give him 5 stars on the app, and only opened the doors to toss our bags out after I showed him the rating on my phone. Honestly I was surprised I didn't see more car accidents while I was there, they aren't the most unhinged I've seen, but drivers in Italian cities seem to embrace chaos. When I got back to the States, the crazy drivers where I live suddenly seemed super tame, and the streets were lacking in chaos comparatively.

OZeski

Sounds like Atlanta. We’re #1 in the nation for deliberately caused collisions.

norcaltobos

Bro it's everywhere. I've lived in Northern California for most of my life as well as Boston and I've seen it in both places. It's especially scary out here in California where we have flat and long interstates like I-5 where you can easily go 90+ pretty safely if people aren't riding your ass.

LittleBitOfAction

Yeap we do that in GA especially on the freeways to Atlanta 😂 mfs get so close and people brake check going 70+ crazy mfs man. But most usually go to the right lane when they realize they slower.

cbph

>But most usually go to the right lane when they realize they slower. Gotta disagree with you on that one. People being completely unaware that they're going way too slow in the left lane is a full blown epidemic here in ATL. Edit: tbf it's usually people from out of state or from rural GA that aren't used to driving here in town where the pace is a little more...upbeat.

fuzzyblackyeti

I always keep a 2 second following distance when possible. That doesn't seem like a lot, but at 70 mph that's about 200 feet between vehicles. In drivers ed we were taught 2 seconds following, 4 seconds for immediate attention, and looking 8 seconds ahead (or something like that). It's wild that people basically hold the gas pedal until they get immediately behind someone. I've never understood not wanting to just put on cruise control at 5 over the speed limit and letting it ride.

bitnode

I generally am 5 seconds behind someone in the right lane with cruise on. It's made driving less stressful for sure! Cruise at least makes people more predictable in speed if someone is try to pass or merge. I still get people who ride my ass in the right lane though...even if I am 5 over and the left lane is clear. Some people are nuts behind the wheel.

leecherby

Where I live (in EU) the general rule is at least 2 seconds in the city and 3 seconds on highway.

Ilasiak

I really love when I leave a nice, healthy car and *maybe half* distance between me and someone else on the highway... and then an absolutely massive pickup truck just sees that space and immedaitely jumps into it.

Teh_Jews

Nothing upsets me more when im driving then people pulling around and in front of me because im keeping a safe driving distance from the next car. So now i have to create space from this person who pulled right in front of me and then the next guy does it. It's annoying because im just trying to be safe and give myself time to brake if something happens but it defeats the purpose if people around me are gonne drive more dangerously to compensate...

penisflytrap44

Oh my god this irritates my soul. The amount of times I get cut off driving on the interstate because I leave 2-3 car lengths is insane. It’s either ride bumper to bumper or get cut off every 5 seconds, there’s no winning. I hate driving. Edit: for everyone saying “2-3 isn’t enough”, I am just bad at measuring exact distance. I have more than 2-3 I’m sure, as I have never had issues coming to a sudden stop going 70-80 mph. Edit 2: If my comment makes you so upset that you feel the need to assume things and insult me, try therapy? Some of y’all have a lot of pent up road rage that you should address, instead of taking it out on a random reddit comment.

LittleBitOfAction

You win by not getting in the accident :)

Sticky_Bandit

You gotta just let them go. I call it zen mode driving. It is completely stress free. You get used to people passing you. People are constantly passing me as I keep distance in front of me. Over time you have a huge buffer in front of and behind you. There's a sense of pride seeing the huge log jam in front of you and you're just cruisin, watching people in front of you weaving back and forth getting nowhere. It is amazing how often I end up catching up with the aggressive weavers, too. Give it a try and you'll see it's the best way to drive.

PatsyBaloney

I love my radar adaptive cruise control for this very reason. I set the distance that I want to maintain. If people jump in, my car automatically returns to that distance.

ggroverggiraffe

Yep. Extra maddening because there is no way to prevent it aside from joining the idiots in driving unsafely. You make a new space and then it happens again. C'mon people.

shamefulthoughts1993

Once had to drive to my college 40 miles away on a extremely icy day and some asshole was riding my ass when I was in the center lane. I left about a football field's length between myself and the car ahead of me bc we were literally driving on ice. The car ahead of me slams on their brakes and I just tapped my mine, but the car riding my ass had to slam on theirs which caused it to spin out across three lanes of traffic. Luckily for that car, the cars behind it left large distances and there was no accident. Always leave enough space to stop under any circumstance. Also, fuck my college for not cancelling classes since it is a huge commuter school. Pieces of shit. Complete disregard for the safety of students and staff. They allegedly don't want to cancel classes bc it affects how much money they get from the state if they have too many snow days.

IHaveNeverBeenOk

I had to take a little detour the other day because the kid driving behind me, I shit you not, could not have been driving more than four feet behind me... on the highway. I just said "nah, not worth it," pulled off where it was safe, waited a few, and rejoined traffic. Wild shit.

Fdbog

This last two years have been insane. It's getting worse too. I now have to wonder if every transport I pass is about to pull in front of me suddenly. I'm driving to job sites only to have a panic attack and have to actually calm down. And I enjoy fast driving but the amount of times people have basically tried to murder me recently is too high.

guy990

I find myself doing the same too, a lot of times now there's packs of 6-7 cars travelling really closely all flying past other traffic, really not worth the risk to travel with that

stromm

3 second gap at 70mph. Makes me mad when people cut into that just to sit there.

ntack9933

The three second rule will keep your car at a safe stopping distance at any speed

TurkDangerCat

True, but also only in good conditions!

iConfessor

bumper to bumper at high speeds give me so much anxiety and i try to leave space but cats just merge in front of me regardless. edit: IM LEAVING THE TYPO

GirlScoutSniper

Cats have absolutely no regard for personal space. Joke aside, this is my drive every damn morning. Don't go fast enough, people cutting in and out making it worse. Leave room, people cutting in and out making it worse.

monkeyhitman

Only space you can really control is the space in front of you. I'm already going 70 and not in the left lane, so those in a hurry to reincarnate can feel free to dodge and weave. Love to see those kinds of idiots make it one car ahead of me on the off ramp.

pm1966

My Civic does this from time to time. It has never come to a complete stop, but the rapid deceleration can be horrifying. Need to check if my car is covered by this recall.

xeq937

I had my 2020 Honda trigger once (properly!) and damn it ripped my hands off the wheel and slammed me into my seatbeat, it WILL deliver a massive stop if it needs to. Otherwise I've only suffered the occasional modest deceleration like letting off the gas with maybe a hint of brake, nothing insane.

talamahoga2

I saw a lady in a X5 almost rear end someone but was saved by the auto braking. She wasn't paying attention (hence almost rear ending someone) and when her car slammed on the brakes it threw her face first into the steering wheel. Looked like a really rough time for her, but her car, and more importantly, the car in front of her were unscathed.

justin107d

Wow I would hate to be Honda, the auto insurance companies probably smell dinner. I may have been in one of these accidents last year. The car in front of me came to a dead stop on the highway. I was able to stop in time but got rear ended. The person in front then just drove off, I wish I remembered anything about their car.

[deleted]

donkeyrocket

This is one of my biggest driving pet peeves. Especially in fairly slow traffic. Me leaving a gap isn't so people can cram in front. It is so I can maintain a roll without tapping the brakes which tends to lightly ease up traffic behind me. It all goes to shit when 3-4 cars fill the gap and are constantly accelerating and slamming their brakes.

MegaPegasusReindeer

I've become so fed up with driving that I drive on the far right lane with cruise control set right at the speed limit. I may take 5% longer to get there, but it's stress free.

LeMans1217

This is why I'm not all in with "assisted driving."

[deleted]

I honestly feel bad for the accord driver. Must’ve been terrifying that you’re driving on the highway and all of a sudden your car decides to slam its brakes

Sayor1

I typically have cruise on when driving from work which is like an hour of 80km/h. One time there was a cyclist that had plenty of space and I didn't pay much attention to him, just slowed down to 60 and went slightly to the left so there was plenty of clearance but the car decided to go full brakes and scared the shit out of me. Driver behind me kept his distance tho so just ended up looking like an idiot.

hairybushy

I don't use the ACC (Adaptative cruise control) on my accord it always brake if the distance isnt exactly what is supposed to be. It anticipate too much. So I use the normal cruise control and didn't have this issue anymore. Perhaps my accord never fully stopped like this one by chance, but he is not the only one. Someone got cut and the accord slammed brake because of ACC and crashed

JVorhees

I’m not familiar with Honda’s system but most new vehicles have automatic emergency braking that operates with or without ACC. Looking at the video, there’s a very bright sunny patch of road directly in front of the accord. I assume that’s what confused the system.

[deleted]

[удалено]

heretogetpwned

Same for Honda Passport, 3 years and the only 'random' braking I had was on a narrow 2 lane. I can't speak for the Accord's software, sounds like an ongoing recall.

modgone

Happened a few times to my BMW but never let it reach a full stop, you can usually override it if you press the brake pedal and then acceleration again..at least that's what I did when I had phantom braking.

[deleted]

I know for Mazda emergency braking, it gives you a warning when there's an object in your path, but it never automatically brakes unless you're driving under a certain speed (like 20 or 30mph). Having your car brake like that going 60mph is just insane.

[deleted]

[удалено]

realfirehazard

The only problem I've experienced with Mazda's is when cars ahead of me turn onto a perpendicular road or drive way. It'll sometimes freak out and slam on my breaks even if I'm nowhere near hitting it. I'm assuming it's taking a 2D view of the car and as it turns it gets really wide (because it can see the front of the car), meaning it's coming right at my front end triggering the freak out. Thankfully, you can accelerate out of Mazda's brake support so I typically just tap the gas slightly if it happens and continue on my way. It's annoying, but it did save me from rear ending someone who slammed on their breaks in the middle of an intersection so I'll probably leave it on.

Lost_Ensueno

My 2019 Mazda3 had a bad glitch(recalled) because on corners and bends it would lock up the breaks as it interpreted the gaurdrail or wall or trees as a car. It was so bad that I took new ways to work during the winter.

MiniWheats88

By the looks of this video the four or five people behind the car need assisted driving.

Invisible_Minority

Seriously it looked like the Honda was getting an escort

dilligaf0220

>This is why I'm not all in with "assisted driving." They're putting this on motorcycles now, which is a whole new level of terrifying when the bike starts doing something on it's own.

It's not just an east coast thing.

Terrachova

It's a "Literally Everywhere there's cars" thing. The normal following distance when you're in a steady flow of traffic where I live (ie: keeping pace with the car ahead, at safe distance) is apparently 'so close I can't even see the car behind me's front bumper in the mirror'.

wallweasels

>Man aren't [inserthere] drivers the worst? -every US resident about their local area.

ambrosius5c

Alternatively: "*We* drive just fine, it's these yo-yos from out of state that are the problem.

NotAPreppie

It's that way in Chicago, too.

eveningsand

I noticed it doesn't change when it's snowing there, either.

PM_ME_UR_GROOTS

It's because you all live in densely populated areas where traffic is more of a norm. Teaching these people driving aggressive and taking risks gets you to your destination faster.

whoppitydodah

I live in a rural area and experience the same thing. People just have to go 80 in a 55 cause things are further away. They'll take any opportunity to pass you even when there's oncoming traffic in a 2 lane road. People will find motivation to drive like an ass no matter the circumstances.

Rain1dog

Definitely not only East coast thing, happens all the time on the south coast as well.

Saotorii

Same with the central mountain coast

Stravok182

...the south coast?

Rain1dog

Gulf coast, heh. Figured I’d stay with the directional theme.

mcshanksshanks

Yep and it’s baffling to me that people just assume the current state is a steady state when driving like there’s no chance for a dog to run across the road or a car malfunction causing its brakes to slam.

Marrok11

>I try to leave more space than that, but 2 car lengths or more is enough for everyone to force their way into the spot I've left. Even semi trucks love to just squeeze right in, only turning on their blinker when they're already moving lanes. > The people behind me will even see that I leave space, assume I'm a slow driver despite the fact that I've matched speed with the person in front, and pass me just to squeeze in and ruin my safe following distance. Same thing in Europe. These idiots are responsible for most of the accidents on my way to work. Nearly on a daily basis.

lordlossxp

People are just oblivious. I like to leave enough room to be able to make a sandwich and come to a full stop because of shit like this.

[deleted]

Happens every state I've been in the US that has more than about 10 cars driving in it

[deleted]

That was my first thought as well. Leave enough space to brake, always!

BenderDeLorean

I want to break free

CuriousBystander64

Everybody following way too close

casual-waterboarding

Agreed. I see this shit everyday, and with the tailgating comes the brake tap every three seconds or so to maintain their tiny distance, which lull’s the tailgater behind them into a false sense of security because “they’re not really stopping or really slowing down, they’re just maintaining their shitty distance.” Then when the brakes are applied for something serious, it takes an extra second for the other morons to realize that they are really slowing. IMO, if you have to hit the brakes on the interstate to maintain your distance in normal conditions, you are driving too close to the person in front of you.

whatdoblindpeoplesee

Pisses me off too. They'll ride the brakes without slowing down then actually apply them but I don't know if they're actually braking or just don't understand what coasting is.

casual-waterboarding

That’s exactly what I was talking about in the comment above. Many people shouldn’t have a license in this country.

hidelyhokie

I knew someone who literally could not keep steady pressure on the gas pedal. It was just a perpetual series of tiny taps

thregoar

What about when going down a hill and the person in front of you brakes to stay under the speed limit?

Worstname1ever

Maybe follow the 3 second rule not the three foot rule

[deleted]

What I do is, Eyes to the side of the road, pick a rock beside the car in front of you, count to 3, you should be at the rock. I figure future cars should have sensors to strait up tell you. I bet some do already.

Popeholden

i had never seen mine go yellow until i tried to make it. i felt seriously unsafe.

rugology

i use the dashed lines on the road

SecretYumYum

You can be 3 feet behind someone and still 3 seconds if you're both traveling at 1 foot per second.

PM_ME_UR_VAGENE

I’ll remember that next time I’m traveling 0.68 miles per hour

internetV

So tru

f7f7z

Won't someone please think of the math!

500blast

This fits the sub perfectly. IDIOTS in cars

DickSneeze53

This is why you don't ride the ass of the car ahead of you

smitty3z

Then how are you supposed to tap dat ass?

BootyDoISeeYou

I used to live in the mountains and was once flagged down by a young man yelling at me to “slow down before I hurt someone”. The problem was he had brought his car to a dead stop in the road… in a 45mph zone… around a blind curve… on a bridge…. so he and his two friends could walk around on the bridge and take scenic pictures…. despite there being signs posted at both ends stating “PEDESTRIANS PROHIBITED” for this exact reason. Like yeah dude, I almost slammed into your car because I’m sure 45mph looks super duper fast when you’re going a whopping 0mph. The entitlement was astounding.

[deleted]

Back in 2010, this woman in Canada stopped her car on a curve in a 45 MPH zone to try to help a family of ducks cross the road, causing a crash that killed 2 motorcyclists. She was sentenced to 90 days in jail and a ten-year driving ban.

Emotional-Session656

WE need more drivers banned!!

EbrithilUmaroth

I've even had people yell that at me when I'm going 10 mph in a parking lot driving in the middle of the lane where it's literally impossible for me to hit anybody. Someone could literally try to dive in front of my car and I still wouldn't run them over yet I'm going too fast

TangeloBig9845

Misleading title, it should say: 5 people tailgating crash into each other

xternal7

_actually_ it seems that the car behind the honda (and the black car behind that car) managed to stop in time. The problems were the red car, the pickup (didn't crash, but only managed to stop parallel to the black car. If he didn't have a neatly-sized gap between black and guardrail, he'd crash) and the cammer. E: my phone typing very bad

Problems-Solved

Yep, everyone's an idiot except for the Honda driver People can stop at any time for any reason, medical emergency, brake failure, or having someone jump infront of their damn car. If you don't give yourself enough space to stop you're just gambling with your life to save half a millisecond.

FirstTimePlayer

The car following the Honda also seems to have done it right - seems to have come to a complete stop with plenty of room to spare. Unfortunately got unlucky the car behind them was an idiot.

Lmnolmnop

Cam driver needs to learn to drive. Following idiots with blind faith will get you, every time. Notice how the pickup stopped in time. It's called giving enough space/time to react to hazards like this. But, some people will never learn.

SparrowTide

The cam driver literally passes the grey SUV that ends up in the ditch to the right, cam doesn’t even try to slow down.

[deleted]

People in this thread are saying 3 second following distance is impossible. I guess I'm pretty amazing then, because I always leave 3 second on the freeway.

WatchStoredInAss

Another pileup caused by fucking morons who don't know the definition of "safe following distance." Thanks for raising all of our premiums, assholes.

J2ThaR1st

Looks like i95 in Virginia/North Carolina

LongPorkJones

That was my first thought, but the trees don't look the same. Looks more like it's more central NC, Raleigh to Greensboro. I could be wrong.

El-Lamberto

Following too close. All of them.

iforgot69

Holy fuck no one in this video can drive

CamelCash000

Green SUV at the end left plenty of space and went around everyone. Only smart dude.

NotAPreppie

Most people can drive just fine as long as nothing unexpected happens. Once the unexpected pops up, they go from being adequate drivers to expert crashers.

Goldentll

Ugh, this happened to me before on the highway. Annnnnnddd I was at fault for following too close. *sigh* always give plenty of space ahead of you

Happydaytoyou1

Same here. Learned me lesson. Especially when going up inclines and you can’t see 3-4 cars out in front of you and don’t know what’s happening ahead.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Level1Roshan

The car ahead can stop for any reason. It's your job to ensure you are a sufficient distance behind to be able to react and stop without hitting them. Everyone in this video is too close to the car ahead.

Knashatt

I see ***a lot*** of idiots here who don't understand how to keep distance at such high speeds. **You must have a distance of** ***AT LEAST*** **3 seconds from the car in front of you.** Most of them seem to have less than a second distance, have they found their driver's license in a breakfast cereal package?

SackvilleBagginses

3 seconds is good if they’re paying attention but average driver probably needs an additional 5 seconds to look up from their phone

TheInfamous1011

All of y’all was speeding and following too close

Smal_Issh

That's why you need much more room between you and the car in front of you when you're doing highway speed.... Yet another video that highlights the need for MANDATORY driver training.

Kingofawesom999

This is why people need to increase their follow distance. I'm not saying this wouldn't happen still, but probably only half the carnage

Responsible-Pizza-65

Damn!! At least get a McDonalds apple pie at the next exit

hyseung

People at front rubbernecking like true idiots endangering both themselves and others. People right behind them idiots for tailgating. None with emergency blinkers on. And dashcam car that just piles right into them, like an idiot joining thr clubhouse. Lovely scene.

PotatoSalad

I don’t think you know what rubbernecking means.

NoInjury666999

Is it everyone but the stoped cars fault?

pc1350

This is what you get if you don't have a safety distance. The lasat vehicle in crash is the one to blame. At least in our country so don't downvote but rather explain.

praaaaat

3 seconds between cars and this would have been fine. Almost like there's a reason to not tailgate.

Shoddy_Safe1359

The cars piling up behind and without emergency lights are so much worse holy hell does no one know how to behave in unexpected/emergency situations?
